What if it was for a great big magnetic inductive charge connector like the Apple Watch? ;-) Definately looks like a wireless charging section, yeah! I'm looking forward to this (one of several aspects of my old Nokia Lumia that I really liked - as well as the 2 stage, like a camera, photo button).

Plot twist: that's actually a giant TouchID sensor.

Heard they were actually going with a DNA sensor...its a lick-ID panel...only you can unlock it, but keep it clean...

I think this is it. It coincides with the leaked dummy and the other 2 schematics we got.
I personally like it, very glad it's not like that abomination with touch ID on the back and aluminium casing with hard edges.
I just hope the front speaker gets embedded under the display as well somehow.

I can't wait until we get more reliable machined parts in June. Hopefully the rear Touch ID isn't true.

I would gladly take an aluminum two-piece shell (glass screen and back aluminum housing) over a three-piece shell (glass screen, metal sides, glass back) as long as the aluminum model had wireless charging.

As much as I like glass backs, the glass design shows smudges way too easily and are more prone to breaking.

...Eh, I'll take what they give us. I'm sure either one will impress. Just no more micro-abrasions, please.
An aluminum back wouldn't allow wireless charging though

I know you're joking, but that would be interesting actually. If the entire back will be glass anyway, they could just put a giant invisible Touch ID sensor on the back to unlock. I'd prefer it to be embedded in the screen, but that would be a good alternative.
It would be very interesting indeed! It was my first tought, actually.
You can calibrate it by holding it and picking it with your right and left hand a few times, so everytime you hold it in your hand, it is unlocked automatically.

Remember the days when we had rumours about Macs, iPods and iPads? Now it's just iPhone rumours.

If OLED is only a stopgap measures until microLED is ready for mass production, then I'll definitely be skipping the OLED version. My iPhone SE should easily last me 3 years until then. :p

How about a got damn QR reader Apple??

Every iPhone can read QR codes via many third-party apps and the built-in camera. What exactly are you looking for?

I'm sure law enforcement would be happy with that. "Excuse me, can you please pick up your phone? Oh, thanks for unlocking it for us." :p

It's a drawing not a schematic

I was thinking the same thing. In technical contexts, schematics are usually used to describe electrical circles. But more broadly, schematic diagrams are merely simplified representations of something.

I've noticed a trend towards the authors of these articles using words in ways that aren't quite right. For example, the recent iCloud email that was sent out by Apple by mistake was called a "bug". It's almost like they are on auto-pilot with their writing.

Probably just better component/logicboard arrangement.

Maybe some benefit for VR given the location of the flash in between (separation)?

This is still a rumour.

Wait until you see the real one, I myself don't think *Apple is that stupid* to put the Touch ID on the back but we'll see.

* Touch ID on the back would be awkward for unlocking if it's flat on it's back or Apple Pay amongst other reasons.

I think for Apple, the relocation of TouchID to the rear is an option of last resort.

This is pretty likely since we saw from previous leaks that the back panel is not aluminium.
Exactly, the dark part is the metal rim, the transparent back is the glass. Otherwise it would be colored in to shown the various grooves and machining that would no doubt exist

What's a single advantage of a proprietary wireless charging system over the existing one again?

Serious question...

Is there a benefit of the vertical camera setup? Or is this just for sake of saving space along the top, on the inside?
If you hold the camera horizontally to shoot video, meaning the two lenses are now also horizontal, there could be 3D or Augmented Reality advantages. I'd say this is certainly a tactical move and not a design/aesthetic one.

Just a different thought on all this.

What if this is the iPhone 8 with built in sensor etc

The other version is the iPhone 7S both have slimmer bezels but the 7S has the sensor on the back and is still aluminium.
