Stop. At the time, usb-c wasn’t a thing. So the choice was ****** micro-usb (fragile, clunky, only can be plugged in one way) or usb-a (big, can only be plugged in one way). Lightning is way better than micro-usb, so it was a great idea.

Agreed. Micro USB is the worst port ever made. The USB consortium clearly have or had no idea about or standards for strength, durability, reliability, consistency, effectiveness etc. it’s like they wanted the port to be **** for planned obsolescence reasons.

The only reason USB-C is better (though arguably still not as good as Lightning physically) is because of the influence of Lightning and having seen a port done right. Again I’m mainly referring to the physical design, not proprietary or licensing issues, which are admittedly annoying as far as Lightning is concerned.

The notch is hurrendous and those ugly cameras on the smaller model. They gonna keep recycling this model for 4 years like they did for the iPhone 6.

Micro usb is technologically inferior to usbc so...

Its taken 5 years since the USB-C connector was finalised for the standards (USB 3.2whatevertheywanttocallitnow) to outgrow what Micro-USB was capable of. The introduction of usbc was not driven only by technological limits.

I get the feeling is that Johnny Ive is not so involved anymore and there maybe even some friction between Tim and Johhny... that my guess anyway.

The bump looks bad but buyers will give it a pass if the cameras are significantly more capable, eg for low light, telephoto, macro etc.

iPhone now is designed to be used with a case to get rid of the camera bump and add more weight to the device. Its crap pushing the extra weight onto the customer in an effort to cover up their poor design effort.

People say Johnny Ive is a good designer? He hasn't been on it since the iPhone 4.

Surely you meant Steve Jobs was a good designer
[doublepost=1555831486][/doublepost]how do I un-merge posts so people can upvote the post they like instead of not upvoting cause they dont like the other parts? piece of crap software

yawn...wake me up when Apple releases the SE2 (updated internals everything else the same).
Apple repeatedly throws out it's own perfect designs in favor of "new" designs that have the latest components and do-dads, but are inferior in areas that really matter (headphone jack, lack of retro port compatibility, size, etc.). Luckily, Siri has been an area of constant improvement.

I think you’ll be sleeping for a long time then.

The other day I was in a meeting and my boss's Mac died. He didn't have his charger.

Of the dozen people there, I was the only one with an Android phone, and I was, therefore, the only one who could help - my Samsung charger's USBC got the Mac back up and running.

Sad that Apple products aren't compatible with each other anymore.

Mac laptops never had the same connection as an iPhone or iPad, so they were only compatible with other Mac laptops. USBc made the Mac more compatible but that's hard to notice in the transitional period.

I’m surprised at the amount of hating for the notch. I literally don’t ever notice it on my XR! I’m betting the ones bitching about it don’t even have one of the X series or they’d realise how ridiculous a complaint it is.

Face ID ensures iPhones will have a big ugly notch for the forseable future. Will look very dated on release.

Because it's already a dated design. Unfortunately due to FaceID it won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

I am not in a hurry to replace my X until they kill the notch. Same story with AirPods, no reason to upgrade. It's AW5 I am looking forward this year.

I know it's just a render and so on...but honestly, if next iPhones are really gonna look like those ugly things (no matter what "awesome technology that hasn't been used before" as Tim Apple says in his keynotes is in there) I won't get any of them. I'm sooo happy with my Red XR 128 GB. Timmy is running out of ideas and lacking of innovation. From now and on that's gotta show some bad numbers for Apple. I'm really sorry because I'm an Apple product lover...

Lol. Face ID os anything but useless. It blows Touch ID out of the water, in my view.
Okay, please tell me at least ONE advantage? Only one, please...

Or not.

I would never buy a phone without Face ID.
What a massive step back that would feel like.

Can’t see how Samsung’s fingerprints are considered an innovation but FaceID is not.

Ridiculous in my opinion.

Quite simple: No need for such a huge ugly notch. Touch ID works perfectly, very fast and I don't have to stare on my phone for unlocking it. So what's the use of Face ID? Animoji? Lol

Im glad that the 5.8” iPhone is getting the same camera. I hated carrying around the 7+ just for the dual cameras.
The 5.8" has always had the same camera and it's always been dual camera. X and XS. There's not even a difference between XS and XS Max. So you were carrying the 7+ due to your own ignorance.

Is it just me or have iPhone designs got uglier with the generation upgrades?

In pictures, yes. However since I got a Xs I think it’s beautifully designed. Feels so premium.

Don’t ask me to pin point what feels more premium as I’m not too sure!

when are the notch getting smaller? some people like to flash they have the newest fone so won't be bothered buying this one since it just looks like the 2-3 years older phone: iPHONE X

that rear camera is ugly

no usb c despite their MacBook and iPad having USB C
Show me other phones with smaller notch that have the same FaceID tech. They all just have a front facing camera, that’s why they can be smaller.

Apple already have lightning to USB-C cable for sale. Why should the iPhone have USB-C, which larger port than lightning? Only latest Pros have USB-C, newer iPad mini 5 and iPad Air have lightning.

I do agree the rear camera bump is a bit unsightly. But Jonny Ive is weird sometimes.

Micro usb is technologically inferior to usbc so...
Most Android phones with USB-C are still using the USB 2.0 standard, only the jack is changed. So no point in using USB-C since lightning can already do everything USB2.0 can, with smaller footprint to boot.

Face ID lets you carry out authentication without having to interact directly with your device. For example, say I want to enter a password into a safari webpage. With Touch-ID, I need to rest my finger on the fingerprint sensor. With Face ID, I just stand there looking at my screen and it gets done automatically.

This essentially saves you a step.

So what this means is that unlocking my iPad Pro is as simple as hitting spacebar on my Smart Keyboard twice. It also allows me to use Siri from the lock screen without having to unlock my device as well, since it automatically unlocks when I am looking at it.

Under the right situations, this means lesser friction when interacting with your device.

I could name a couple more, but I think you get the point.

Ignorance is assuming they would have upgraded to X or XS (which came out at most 1 year and 2 years after his purchase, respectively... and didn't exist at the time the 7+ came out...) instead of buying what they had to at the time and putting up with it for the lifespan of that phone.
