I'm surprised of how this happens again and again and again...
The triangular layout is probably related to some 3D features, not possible if they were linearly aligned. And one good design principle is to differentiate functional parts. Something they won't (and shouldn't) do is, like some comments say, "Well, we have this obstacle, so let's make the whole phone 2 mm thicker. Why? Idk, it would look better (spoiler: no), and we can put more battery/weight". It's right to make the phone thicker if you really think it will be better for some real reason, not as an excuse.
I've also seen some people really excited with an iPhone with hard edges à la iPad Pro. Probably, until they had it in their hands for some minutes. They usually say that they iPhone design is boring. I agree: if it changed a lot, I should think it's not really that good. There are lots of companies out there changing their designs every semester because it's their only way to gain attention. And that's why Apple is not like them (despite that creepy TV+ event).
