Design compromise? The headphone jack was removed for more internal space so the iPhone X is possible.

The notch is specifically designed to get the maximal amount of screen space as possible.

Indeed, needing more internal space for a new home button at the expense of a popular feature is a design compromise by any standard. I think it's pretty obvious it wasn't an innovative move and was cleverly justified with the release of a pair on £159 earphones with the cords cut off.

The notch gives about 5mm more screen space in each top corner and this is redundant when watching media. We are yet to learn what advantage this actually has. Personally I think the notch compromises the aesthetics of the front of the phone but if it does indeed offer something useful then it's worth trying.

We are all Apple consumers here and not every observation has to be glowing with praise. I wouldn't be a very good designer myself if I didn't get constructive criticism from my employer and clients.

This was on TechRadar earlier too. The consensus seems to be that it's probably fake.
It's obviously fake for multiple reasons. The number one reason is that the weibo app is magically updated to the new design. That's a nice trick since that app wouldn't even be allowed on the App Store updated like that, and obviously those aren't developers that are granted access to unannounced features.

The removal of the headphone jack was for the iPhone X more so than the iPhone 7 Taptic Engine and Battery increases. You'll see that soon.

Anyway, the notch has a very useful purpose which is simple to understand..it takes the status bar and moves it to a place where screen wouldn't otherwise be. This gives the user about 1/8"(height) of additional screen real estate..... You don't understand that?

I'd rather have a worse battery than lose a headphone jack. I've never had battery issues. The loss of the jack is a much bigger pain in the arse as far as I am concerned and thankfully millions of people think the same.

I understand the reasoning for moving the status bar up, but I'm not sure that 3mm across the top is that valuable when using a phone? If that is the pure reason as you say, then I think it's genuinely a hash. That's just my opinion though and the feedback so far has been rather mixed.

I'm already pretty tired of notch. The problem is with the leaked pictures. They all show a pronounce notch. But the notch need not be a notch. It can be whatever.

Thing is, I don't want to see a notch. No notch for me thanks. I'll download all the no-notch apps right away.

I really really want to like this phone but that notch looks hideous when the sides are not blacked out

Here is a question. With the new "notch", cut-out thing at the top of the screen (if indeed this is the final design) how will you quickly scroll back up to the top of a page in Safari, or the top of your Inbox in mail?

An example; on a current iPhone, open the Mail app to your Inbox, scroll down a page or so. Now, tap the to of the screen in the middle, and your Mail app helpfully scrolls back up to the first message. Lovely.

If you instead tap in the top-left corner (where the Carrier icon is) then Mail drops back a screen, as though you had actually tapped on the "Mailboxes" icon just below that.

If you tap in the top-right corner (where the battery icon is) then Mail opens the "Edit" function, as though you had actually tapped on the "Edit" icon just below that.

Does this mean the stock apps will have to change behaviour, or the "scroll up" function won't work?

I am confused...

Interested to see how Apple approach this too.

I just cant imagine how ugly that top notch will look when watching videos/movies in landscape mode.

The cutout, when the app opened in a white background takes some getting used to, not going to lie.

I hope this is due to beta software, that the Apps have not been updated to Apples latest guidelines. That say the top bar should always be black.

I'm guessing the physical screen is tall enough (wide enough in landscape) so a video viewed in landscape will fit between the blacked-out notch and the other edge of the phone.

Look at how the Essential Phone handles the notch in landscape video:

Apple loves the color white way to much, it's in their legacy.

What if the front bezel is white, how is Apple going to do it?

I guess it would be the same. The video would still fit inside the boundaries.

You'd just have a white bezel around the screen instead of black.

It might look terrible... but I've never been a fan of white around my screen anyway. :p

Yes, the 3.5 mm Jack has inconvenienced many. But I still see it as Apple was embracing the future as it was where Bluetooth is ultimately becoming predominate more every day. Therefore, they made improvements to areas where I think Are more crucial for the user with the battery life extended (At least two hours additional according to Apple). It's just a matter of iPhone users like yourself that express their disdain, which is understandable because you appreciated it. But as I have mentioned before in other threads, this company has made maneuvers that many don't appreciate, but there is a method behind the measures who refuse to understand why, even if it means they ditnshree with it.

I see it as a design compromise at present as the technology is still widely used. I don't have to agree with Apples direction on everything. In fact I'm losing faith with them a lot lately.

I saw it more as an opportunity to sell $350 headphones under the guise of advancing technology overall

I have Apple products and do enjoy them and find they make my life easier. I am not however, a die hard Apple or nothing type guy. I like to think critically and what works best for my situation and made the switch to Apple and have enjoyed it.

That being said, this new iPhone if the rumors all hold true, is not something that even raises my pulse slightly. I was in the store and happened to glance over at the Galaxy S8. Now that did raise my pulse a bit. Very clean, although myself I do not like the operating system nearly as much as i like Apple.

1. The top and bottom bezel are nice and clean. It makes sense, rather than a potentially ugly notch.
2. It really does go edge to edge on the sides and form factor is much cleaner than the mock ups of iPhone 8.
3. Wireless charging
4. Weaker camera and really dumb placement of the fingerprint sensor
5. Potentially quite a bit less money

There are a lot of other things, but the Galaxy has a clean look that reminds me of an Apple Product and am hopeful that the new iphone is cleaner looking than the mock ups. Guess we will see next week.

If the mock ups are true though, we will not be upgrading any of our 6 iPhones. Not switching to Samsung but it does look nice.

Not a techie here, just a regular guy.

Why this looks fake to me:

- They never show the frame of the phone itself.
- The cutout is not symmetrical. It is sharply marginated at its upper edge on the left while curved and smoother on the right. I bet they cut some black tape and put it across the top middle of the screen to simulate a notch.

Fugly is more like it. That is horrible if it actually looks like that.
I find it hard to believe Apple would do it that way with the cut out and not have it blend it with a straight line.

Makes it look like a Samsung/android type phone

It's supposed to have that bar but who knows how they'll make it look. If it looks anything like this it'll be ugly to me.

Makes sense why they'd be filming it in the dark as well if this is true

I just don't why I'd pay £1000 for it? I can get a Galaxy S8 right now for £450. I'm not going to upgrade from a 6s to a 7s (or whatever they call it) and have the crap new iPhone. Obviously I want to upgrade to the the iPhone 8, otherwise I just feel crap about my purchasing decision and end up wanting the iPhone 8 still. However I'm not going to pay £1000 for a phone, I can get a good Laptop for that, I can build a good gaming PC for that, you can get a good 4K OLED TV for that.

So I'll just either stick with my 6s or go Android this time around, I mean Android has come a long way and OEM skins aren't the mess they used to be.
Hahaha, so buying an 7s will make you feel like crap about your purchasing decision but buying an inferior product from Samsung will make you feel better? And I don't get why everyone is hating on high prices for the phones.
What is the single most used device during your day? It will probably be your phone.
Don't get me wrong, I think the phone is also very expensive, but I am willing to pay that price, because I look at it for 5 hours every day, some days even up to 7 hours (I have a 3 hour commute every day). So it is my single most used device. And I am ready to spurge on that. And if you break it down; it's 41 USD each month (999 over 24 months). That goes down to around 1.4 USD a day. I don't know about you but I have used my money on stuff more stupid than an iPhone.
[doublepost=1504685302][/doublepost]
Then get the S8 if you can get it for 450 GBP. The iPhone 8 will not be that much better to where it is worth more than double the price. You will still get an OLED screen, slim bezels, a high end camera, tons of software features, a good processor, plenty of RAM, quick charge, wireless charging, etc. That extra 550 is Apple Tax.

If you stick with the 6S, all you have is just iOS and 3D Touch. The 6S is already two years old, so that means the parts have gone through a ton of wear and tear. You can get a new Samsung 2 year warranty to go with your S8. Plus you can sell your 6S towards the S8.
Hahaha you sure seem to advocate for Samsung on here, huh? ;P
That extra 550 is service. That extra 550 is reliablity. That extra 550 is Software updates until 2020 at least. That extra 550 is security. And most of all iOS. Those are all things you do not get in the same capacity with Samsung.

Well, the Airpods are 160, soooooooo. And don't come for the Airpods. It is the best new device Apple has launched in a long time.

Well no, you can't. Because Apple hasn't showed us yet how they are going to handel it. So until then your guess is as good as mine. So why don't we wait until it will be presented in 6 days, 8 hours and 50 Minutes.

Nah, I am just saying if someone is adamant about not paying the sticker price and can find a suitable replacement, they should go for it. Apple Tax cannot be calculated directly because software updates might mean an extra $50 to me. To you, it might be worth more. My iPhone SE has iOS for $180. My iPad has iOS for $280. So the Apple Tax varies per product as well.

Yes, you do get a lot from Apple, but that's if you want what they offer. You can get a combination of those things with other companies as well. Google's Pixel has a solid warranty and support system. Timely updates for about 2-3 years from them too. Google also puts monthly patches and will secure stuff as time goes on. It's not iOS security, but it is not porous as other Android OEMs.

I think it's a fake.. corners of the screen are WAY too fugly to get out of apple industrial design
