Has anyone considered their might be a reason for the protrusion beyond the obvious camera bayonet mount? What if the camera is used for a pulse sensor? It would be much easier to find the camera lens with the protrusion.

I read through 12 pages of people saying the same thing...
- OMG NOOOOOOOO/Apple is losing it/Will not buy etc
- Use a case if you dont like it
- I dont care/their is a purpose

We're really beating a dead horse here. This is a rumor, shouldn't we be speculating on its' validity or it's purpose rather than saying how upset you are about a potential feature that you can't confirm nor do you know the reasoning behind such a design.

Best case scenario, this is fake/old or the protrusion has a very specific and useful purpose. Worst case scenario, apple was chasing thinness and you are stuck with a minor inconvenience. I sincerely doubt that Apple could have fit more battery life into the phone and opted not to. The inside of a MBA is a work of art. Who else uses multiple batteries in a laptop to make it even smaller and 12hr battery life?

I really want apple to screw with the world on the 9th, announce the iWatch and OSX release but not mention the iPhone at all.

wait everyone lets see everyone elses option for fitting there camera in a "thin phone". note: not even close to a thing as this phone.

Ugly??? googles the on only one that minmalized it. the G3 is flush but way thicker of a phone. Anyone who knows anything about cameras would know that the depth of the lens is extremely important factor in quality. This would not and does not suprise me and I still bet it will be infinetly better then the other camera phones on the market.

Isn't that a little weird...?

If the flash is behind the lens, won't that cause a shadow from the lens???? I noticed that this happens now with my Sony camera. Protruding camera is gonna make for bad selfies at night. :(:( :D

Right up until this I've liked every iPhone, iPod, iPad design. I even like iOS 7. But this, just no. I'm sure it'll still sell faster than crack covered smack on a bogof offer though.

I hardly look at the outside of my car as I spend the vast majority of my time inside it when in use but guess what? I went and bought one where I thought the outside looked nice.
In fact that was the first thing I looked at.

point taken but with the way people park and ding my car up I sure would like a case for it if I could! :D

Is this camera actually going to be an issue other than making people fuss on Macrumors that they don't like the look of it?

Every two years we have the same conversation:

"It's getting too thin now, it's ridiculous"

Try going back just two generations of design change, see how much difference the weight/thickness makes.

Oh, you mean the iPhone 4/4S? Yep, the best designs; perfect weight and perfect thinness.

Can't believe they couldn't make the phone 7.1 mm thick so that 1 mm protruding camera would've never happened.

I think the one on the bottom has a finger print scanner there hence the design, I have to laugh at you in your attempt to even compare the Nokia camera to an iphone, you do realise that model has the 40 odd megapixel camera plus a PROPER Xenon flash and optical image stabilisation right? On quality it pretty much destroys the iPhone camera. You buy that phone for it's camera! It would literally be a miracle to fit that much of an advanced camera into the phones body. And that hump is a tiny price to pay for a proper xenon flash.

As for the Nexus 5, well it is a very nicely designed phone with a lovely 1080P screen and a 2300 mah battery and is 8.59mm thick, the camera is protruding as it has Optical Image Stabilisation built in...... and it costs HALF the iPhone cost and I very much doubt Google were going to spend the same amount of money Apple does on it's iPhone design, if they did I'm pretty sure the camera would be flush with the body.

So yeah, I am pretty sure with Apples R&D, it's endless resources and money that Google didn't have or spend, it could make a phone the same thickness as the current iPhone and have a flush camera and a 2000 mah battery.
I've no idea about the Samsung phone you posted?

That's going to look and feel horrible like it does on the iPod touch. Surely they can come up a smooth bump to accommodate this rather than a hideous ring sticking out.

Samsung and other Android makers rejoice at this scenario. Apple will be leaving the profitable revenues of those who find 4.7" too small to continue buying Android phones. Woo hoo!

Why is this a good thing? Tradition? Only one-size-fits-all makes sense? Apple can't manage more than 1 phone size? Apple doesn't like high margin profit? Apple doesn't want that bigger-screen business? A 5.5" screen phone should be held back for an upgrade next year (though that makes little sense with so many passionately against the size- why is it an "upgrade"?)? Etc.
I own an Galaxy Note II, I was enchanted by the size and Stylus, I still have it as backup phone but since I come back to an s4 and then my HTC ONE M8, I realized that the perfect size is under 5", 6" is too heavy also difficult to hide when you're on danger, compact 4.7" seems the right size for a social phone (under 4" are just smart phone), so given the goods of iOS 8 I'll swith back to iPhone and 4.7 " no case if the Note 4 soon to be released makes coffee or predicts stock rises, I'm on the iPhone 6 way.

FYI Phablet are good for make news but very poor on customer loyalty, I'm witness of that.

One thing I learned while reading this thread: If you defend the protruding camera then you're here-by drinking he kool-aid. Ahhh...Mac Rumors at its finest! I mean how dare someone have a different opinion than someone and it be valid, we can't have that non sense.

In the end, like most said, it's a moot point b/c it can be found on the majority of the other leading smartphones, it's not a deal breaker. But it wouldn't stop me from being disappointed and bitching and moaning over the eye-sore, it's a compromise for everything else. Kind of like the iPhone 5 being as brittle as it is. I hated it, but it was a compromise. The 5s did better, hopefully the 6 solves that issue at least.

90% of the people complaining about the design of the phone will buy it, and later applaud its design as the best thing ever. They will then complain that Apple didn't stick with the "stellar design" of this phone when another redesign surfaces.

I love apple, and to date their products have met my needs better than any competitor.

In a world where 1440p screens will be common within 12 months, 3gb RAM, quad core chips to boot if a lot of these rumours are to believed it might finally make me switch.

If the LG G3 was of better build quality it would be a world beating phone, 128gb SD Card too.

I will allow Apple the chance to try and win me round as they so often do, but they seem to be making awfully slow progress at the moment, what ever the iPhone 6 is will likely be the basis for the 6S and thus be around until late 2016 and hopefully LG and the other Android makers will have learned to make phones from premium materials by then.

In case you didn't know, the Nexus 5 is subsidized by Google, so of course it's cheap. It serves as a marketing tool for Android fans and tech blogs.

I'm just one of those people who never buy or use cases. I like the look and design of the phones I use (for the most part) and don't want to have to use a case just to make it feel/look right.

again, the ring protruding .6mm isn't going tosuddenly make me scoff and spit at the new device. I just wish they didnt feel the need to have a protruding camera.

Well said.

Ah, this is the LG G3 that is 8.9mm thick, and has a LASER FOCUSED camera, and it is still flush with the body.

What about the HTC One Plus One, again 8.9mm thick and has a flush camera, or the HTC One M8 again flush camera but it's 9.35mm thick.

So if Apple makes this iPhone 6 with a camera hump, it's stupid, if it made it 1mm thick and had a flush camera it could still be the thinnest phone and have a decent flush camera and have a bigger battery. Well it could still have a bigger battery but for who knows what reason we have rumours of an 1800mah battery.
