That's because the camera is on the other side of the device. Even if it was a fully assembled iPhone with the ring sticking out, looking at it from this angle will still have this side completely flat on the surface due to weight. The protruding ring doesn't make the phone levitate.

Either that, or just the fact that the camera itself isn't there at all, just the hole, thus allowing it to sit flat.

I highly doubt this is a real leak in any way. This is just a 3D representation of what it could be like. If you look at the side of the phone there is the lock button and the SIM card tray, however the SIM card tray seems far too high to be the real placement.

Isn't the camera on the opposite side? Wouldn't that make images of the phone appear flat? An image of the side with the camera would give a better indication of the impact of the protrusion, imo

True. I still think it will end up being much ado about nothing (as is usually the case with Apple).

I love Apple and all, but are you actually suggesting a larger battery wouldn't be a good idea?

I think I'm suggesting the opposite of that. I was responding to someone that thought the protrusion of the camera due to the thinner design of the new iPhone was no big deal since it was such an insignificant measurement.

I simply asked if the difference was so insignificant, why not keep the (slightly) thicker (same as iPhone 5S) design and use the space for more battery? And avoid having a camera lens that protrudes from rest of the body

From a previous post of mine where someone asked me what the wobble was like:

I have an iPod Touch 5G which has a protruding camera.

I've just done a test on a flat, hard desk and here are the results.

Green area - iPod rocks when pressed
Red area - iPod doesn't rock when pressed

Bear in mind you can also still touch the screen and perform actions on the green area without it rocking if you are light fingered with it. Also, when it does rock it's nothing major, around a half mm movement, it doesn't bother me but I can see it annoying some people. Obviously it doesn't rock if you have a back cover on it.

Image

mine rocks if you use the bottom right as well as the top left. i think your illustration should just show a red strip going from top right, to bottom left. that would be more accurate. (at least when i tap on my ipod)

If this is true, I will be curious as to why Apple chose it. I guess in 20 days we'll find out.

I don't see the problem with a protruding camera, they have Sapphire covering them so its unlikely to get damaged.

my glass table, leather table top, and laquered nightstant will be damaged instead. It's ridiculous and stupid.

Most that are complaining about the "protruding" camera will more than likely, use a case on the phone and any form of case will eliminate this.

Don't worry about it, or don't get the phone.
I want the phone tho, and i never use a case.

This schematic it could be from beginning of 2014, the latest rumours with the design of the device didn't show this

so basically its the same thickness as the old iPhone if you take the camera ring into account. Too bad they didn't just maintain the thickness, make the lens flush, and use the extra space for battery

IF this is true - it's 0.77mm of protrusion.

Whilst this will cause some 'rock' when laid flat on a surface, it's going to be TINY in movement.

IF Apple add this simply because the camera module is thicker than their aspirations for a thinner phone then it's an odd compromise to make.

Like i say if iphone 6 will be under 6.5mm thin , yes it can't fit a performance camera in that area...but we are talking about 7mm thin. And i thought Apple will go no thinner than 7mm because of that, to be completely flat

Thick. 7 mm thick. Thin is not a dimension. Would you say that you are 180 cm short???? So sick of this bloody AppleSpeak.

Interesting that 0.67mm is looking like how much thinner the iPhone 6 is than the iPhone 5/5S... No-one ever complained about the 5 being too thick... They complained about battery life. Let's fix what's not broke and **** the rest! :)

"My iphone5 is far too thick. I can't even fit it in my pocket" said nobody, ever.

Don't most people use their iPhone with a case anyway? I certainly have to, as I drop my phone at least once a week. Phone plus case would be thinner, which is a good thing, and no camera would protrude from the case, which is good as well.

The only other option would be that they make the camera thinner (resulting in worse optics) or they make the iPhone thicker for the one single purpose of not letting the camera stick out. Both options seem silly to me.

Agree. Particularly after reading this morning's news. ISIS, Middle East, Missouri.

I hope it doesn't wobble but I will probably adapt if it does.

You've summed up my thoughts exactly, I think we need a bit of perspective. You'd honestly think this is a life/death scenario the way some people talk about this stuff on here.

I simply don't understand the rationale (other than making the device as slim as possible). It's going to make for a rocky surface and, regardless of how durable, will seemingly only damage the lens much easier.

That is exactly why you will need to buy insurance and be prepared for costly repairs or replacements.

What about that 2D spirit level thing to see if a surface is flat? That'll work well with a camera sticking out...

As others have said, it is annoying they have gone for thin over a better battery life, yet again.

Finally, in my opinion, what we have seen so far looks ugly. The real thing will doubtless look better, but this just looks like any old Android phone to me. If I didn't want an Apple (since all my other products are Apple), and I didn't want a larger screen, I would not be bothering with this device.

I think you trying to think things through and make sense.
But this is the new and improved Apple Beats, Inc.

What do you do? Slam your phone down? What glass table will be ruined by laying a phone down on it?

Apple are THE premium electronics manufacturer - their specs are always below par but people pay for the design, construction and "experience". 0.1mm might not be much but then why not by another product from another manufacturer that's "good enough" for less money? People buy Apple because they expect more, they expect better, not "good enough".

It's a non-issue. Sorry, but it is. ;)
