Brace yourselves people, eventually it's going to get even thinner. As of now the headphone jack is the largest opening on the iPhone. I see them eventually getting rid of the headphone jack all together. They'll make their beats headphones (as a earlier report suggested) and EarPods with a lighting port connection at the end plus a lightning to headphone jack for 29.99.

Just me guessing...

This protruding lens actually looks pretty fantastic.

I mean, I realise its functional, but it breaks up the otherwise boring, flat, and monotonous design of the iPhones rear cover.

No doubt, we could see Apple adding more protruding components (antenna? flashlight?) in the future as iPhones continue to get thinner. It will make for more interesting and eye-catching designs.

Don't like the protruding ring

Apple should have increased the case size to make the camera flush and put a larger battery in the extra space.

This

I would bet my bottom dollar, if Apple would sell a thin and a not so thin version of the same phone, say Version a) 6.7 mm, protruding Camera, Wall huggers battery, form over function, and Version b) 8.5 mm, flushed camera, fantastic battery life, extremely solid body, that Model b) would sell better.

This...a thousand times over.

I used to use an iPod Touch 3rd Gen, for just about everything back in the day that I would use my current 4s for, organisation, email, music and whatnot. However, the thing that made it a slightly frustrating product for me to use was the curved back, which caused it to wibble wobble all of the place whilst typing on it. Furthermore, if my iPhone is resting against, say, a couple of leaves of paper on one corner, and then receives a notification, the sound is noticeably louder and less pleasant to listen to.

This new protrusion if it is a reality is definitely a black or white matter, with many thinking nothing of it, whilst others are deeming it to be a severely problematic aspect of the design. Whilst whenever my phone is down on a surface, it is resting on top of its phone case (Beyzacase ftw!) and therefore this issue would not be much of a problem to me in the long run, I do feel that if this is true about the camera, it probably should have been thought out better. If it is protruding by that much, I ask myself 'why have they bothered slimming the rest of the profile if the camera is going to be sticking out', that much of a millimeter thicker on the rest of the profile would add almost no mass, and seriously, is the end user going to notice?

Personally, what I have always loved about the Apple products of the recent years is the inclusion of a flush and uniform design, barring the white or black strips, they can eff off in my opinion. The MacBook Pro, Air, and just about every single one of their mobile devices (excluding said iPod Touch 5 of course) are totally flush, and they look rather fantastic all around, so WHY have they switched to this stupid raised camera!

By the time the iP7 comes out, the same people complaining about the iP6 will be saying they want the iP6 design back. Happens each and every time. It's cool to like whatever it is they're leaving behind.

What do you do? Slam your phone down? What glass table will be ruined by laying a phone down on it?

Ah, come on; are you trying to tell me you never slide your phone aside, and pick it up straight up in a 90 degree angle?

"Oh no!"

Do people think Apple can defy the laws of physics, suddenly? Those lenses have gotta go *somewhere*.

Really? People see this as a problem?
everyone I know wanted or needed cases on their phones from day one and having a protruding camera lens actually works to the benefit of a quality enclosure.

You've summed up my thoughts exactly, I think we need a bit of perspective. You'd honestly think this is a life/death scenario the way some people talk about this stuff on here.

Yeah, there always will be bigger problems. but hey, i'm not on CNN here, so as far as the mac is concerned, this is the biggest "issue" right now.

I do all of those things with a 4, 4S, 5, and 5S, and my glass table has never scratched. Nor has my lacquered night stand. How is a polished sub 1mm ring going to do anything different?

I rarely ever use a case, and this will make me have to. I dont like it, i understand that you don't care tho.

You say this now, but at the end of the day, nobody wants to be the lonely outsider at the party with a fat, ugly phone. Even if it means the battery doesn't last till the end of the night.

Yes.

I'm not talking eco-system or efficiency or any of that - but compared to the main mobile phone players Apple phones ARE lower specced in every area. Battery size, resolution, RAM, processor speed, replaceable memory/battery, speaker quality etc etc etc.

iPhones are thinner and 64 bit. That's all really.

I've had iPhones since the 3G but now is the first time I'm considering a change, I don't want thinner, I want better battery life and more memory would be a plus since I travel the world a lot for work and "the Cloud" isn't a viable option for storage due to roaming data costs. The HTC One M8 seems to be a very good phone, I'm wondering in what area the iPhone 6 might be better aside from thickness?

^ exactly.

I wonder if these people complain about the lenses sticking out of their dSLR? ... :D

Yeah this is pretty much a deal breaker for me... I use my phone on flat desk all the time. 0.7mm isn't much, but it will rock. I would go so far as to say that Steve Jobs will be spinning in his grave if the flagship phone has a protruding camera. If you are going to have such protrusions - why even go for such thin design in the first place. You might as well give up and put 4 little 0.7mm feet on it.

And people talk about cases... this isn't an iphone4, the back is made of metal. You don't need a case. I can understand protecting the screen, but protecting the metal shell is crazy, you might as well just go buy a larger plastic phone.

Secondly: Why do we always see CAD screen shots that look so incredibly dodgy? Look at the red arrows. Different sizes and heights. Screams of 100% fake to me. No CAD software is going to produce arrows like that.

Nope, I think many would be happy for the lens to stay flush and the phone to stay 7mm thick, they could use the extra space for, ooh I don't know - Battery maybe?? The one thing constantly being asked for where no-one is demanding thinner iPhones.

The iPhone 6 has to be thinner than the 5/5s because the footprint of the phone is going to be larger. The 4.7" model is likely going to be Apple's flagship version. It's bad marketing for the iPhone 6 to get heavier year over year. Remember, this is Apple we're talking about.

Getting heavier is less of an issue when the phone is much bigger, like the 5.5" one will be.

The only reason for this alleged protrusion is to make the camera better. It doesn't appear like it will affect usability that much and you know Apple has considered that in the design of the iPhone 6. This wasn't just added on at the last minute.

Apple will unveil the iPhone 6 on September 9, with a launch for the 4.7-inch version likely coming about a week or so after. It is possible that the 5.5-inch model may launch alongside its smaller counterpart, however production issues may push back its release until late next year or 2015.

Isn't next year 2015? Why would they announce a new phone now to ship late next year?
Sure, the elf at North pole can't joint the parts, so Santa can't delivery the 5.5 iPhone made on North pole but designed at California USA
