Predictably, the "Apple should have <insert ridiculous moan>" comments are flooding in, *based on a rumour*, because we're all suddenly industrial designers... and for every ONE moaner, I bet there's 100,000 people who think it's a beaut and couldn't care less; guess which one Apple sell to and care about?

this obviously does not matter at all once you put your phone in a slim leather case which it will most likely come with. in fact it helps put the lens closer to flush with the surface of the case allowing better wide angle shots.

I do all of those things with a 4, 4S, 5, and 5S, and my glass table has never scratched. Nor has my lacquered night stand. How is a polished sub 1mm ring going to do anything different?

It's a protruding piece of metal, designed to be scratch resistant thus harder than those materials. Hell, it would make a mark on leather if you lay it down for a while.

I'm worried it would scratch.. if it doesn't, i'll let you know. If it were flush however, i wouldn't worry. I wouldn't feel the thing in my pants, i wouldn't have a wobbling phone when i type on it while having it on the table, etc etc.

I don't know if it would make me not buy the 6 but it's the ugliest thing i've ever see them do.

Never satisfied?

With each and every model, people want a thinner phone. Yes, you can argue this might be too thin since the camera now protrudes, but Apple takes great pride in photography. The iPhone being one of the most used photography devices, it only makes sense for them to put as much effort into the camera as possible. While doing so, they also have to make the people happy who want a thinner phone. The phone is increasing in size and people still want that "one-handed use". Making it thinner was a necessity to keep that function available.

Also, Apple probably knows that some ridiculously high percentage of people use a phone case. Thus making the protruding camera irrelevant. I personally don't like to use a case even though I probably should since I tend to drop my phone.

The camera will be annoying at first for some. However, typing on a flat surface isn't what I use my iPhone for; I have an iPad or an iMac for that.

I believe Jobs once said the consumer doesn't know what they want until we give it to them. We don't even know what the reasoning is yet and some are already planning to jump ship.

Time will tell what the rationale was behind this. That being said, I do know one thing: like every single iPhone before, the iPhone 6 will sell more than its predecessor.

No need to worry... we'll all love it once it's in our hands. Same thing with huge bezels, 1gig of RAM and no real multitasking ;)
A real fanboy finds a way to defend "his" company.

Just because by this stage rumours generally seem to be pretty accurate - I remember saying the iPhone 5 design rumours were false because the camera didn't sit parallel to the corner radius like in the iPhone 4 and that it sat too far down in the glass panel rather than central - something Apple would "never do" in my own words. I was wrong. They are getting sloppier with their design so I expect this is real, thin is now more important than any other factor - I do hope any protruding lens is factored into measurements if that's the case otherwise it's a false measurement! :p

They have gotten sloppy and it is obvious. With the 5, I felt that the antennae windows would necessarily align with the breaks/spacers on the side and horizontal lines of the front--I was wrong. The leaked design of the iPhone 6 continues the trend towards design by committee that's been prevalent since Jobs left. The leaked version is definitely "good enough" and even Jobs made some concessions--I'm sure they tell themselves.

Jobs turned out amazing products, but he was very hard man to work for. The current Apple leadership team are almost certainly better people to work for, and Apple certainly is still raking in the money while continuing to turn out a premium phone. Apparently, the flat and rounded design was insisted upon and everything else made to fit...until the optics team won a concession after convincing people that further shrinking wasn't currently possible (and they're probably right).

I'm sure the iPhone 6 will be a fine phone. It will probably be the best Apple has made yet. But, with all the concessions made, they're increasingly turning out bland and boring products. They don't take risks, like they used to. Jobs was an artist, albeit in a medium that is still largely unappreciated and misunderstood, and they just don't have that unified and distinct vision any longer.

So, since Apple is now just another electronics mega corp, I wish they would stop pretending they can fake the old mojo and work on what's really important. The first thing is probably battery life, for all of these devices...why can't we get a few days or a week out of a phone before recharge?....we ought to, and we will eventually, why not now? Waterproofing/ruggedizing---why isn't this insisted upon, since the technology is even available to consumers at retail this very moment? Why are we still having to worry about running out of space on our devices? iCloud could and should fix that, but the paltry 5gb is makes storing backups even difficult--if Google can offer 15gbs what's stopping Apple?

Nope, I think many would be happy for the lens to stay flush and the phone to stay 7mm thick, they could use the extra space for, ooh I don't know - Battery maybe?? The one thing constantly being asked for where no-one is demanding thinner iPhones.

So people want the same camera as last year, with NO improvements? I think you'd find a different class of complainers, then.

It's called "take it or leave it" and good for Apple for not pandering to every single pedant alive.

Name calling? :-/ I think you're probably imagining it.

Damn I really feel like we won't see the 5.5" until it launches alongside the iPhone 6S in September 2015

iPhone 6S (for Sapphire) and iPhone 6L (for Large)

Perhaps to you, but even a millimeter is quite noticeable on a smooth surface and will have the propensity to snack on stuff, and perhaps collect dust.

Ooh err, am I going to have to buy extra crisps and peanuts for my phone in September? :p

Personally, I'd prefer the camera to be flush, but I'm not going to get worked up about it. It's hardly a deal breaker, and if the camera is vastly improved, then I suppose it's a good compromise while still maintaing their ever-increasing need for thinness (which, may I add, I welcome).

Unless you believe being called an industrial designer is being called names, then I don't think he was calling anyone names. If you're going to try to call someone out on something, at least have the courtesy to take the time to actually read what people post.

He's calling them "moaners"

I'm not adding to the discussion either tho, so i'll go back to trying to ignore these kinds of posts.

I am really looking forward to the 'story' that justifies those antenna bands (nope I can't get over it). It should go something like "Reception is now WAY better than on any previous iPhone". My hope is that the bands will be way less visible on the black version.

You think one of the world's most renowned industrial designers is going to release a phone with those bands? You guys are funny.

Find other photos online of the rear shell...those bands are obviously placeholders for something else.

If it's going to protrude like that then if better be a damn amazing camera. I mean anything less than market leading is a fail.

That being said. I doubt Apple will do this. Personally just widen the phone to make the lens flush with the back and bump up the battery. Boom. Kill like 2-3 birds with one stone

^ exactly.

I wonder if these people complain about the lenses sticking out of their dSLR? ... :D

Yea, why the funk couldn't those things fit in my pocket! Good thinking. Finally something new to complain about. Thanks!!!

Some people on here STILL believe the 5.5-inch exists!

Wow.

It WON'T be released this year. If anything, it'll be released September 2015.

Bless.

I'll be surprised if we're not seeing what the final product looks like. Why, did they turn out the iPhone 5, with it's asymmetrical antennae windows, side spacers, and front features? Weren't they the world's most renowned industrial designers back then?

Agreed, it was a point of discussion on the iPhone 5, and after the 5 hit the streets we started seeing complaints from people that their iPhone 5 was bending very easily where as the iPhone had not had such a problem. Now with the iPhone 6 reportedly being even thinner. I worry about its structural integrity to the degree that it will hold up unscathed in day to day usage.

That's why the iPhone 6 has curved sides. The arch shape is the strongest shape there is and should prevent bending even at this thickness.

The aesthetics of a flush already thin design is superior to the aesthetics of a slightly thinner design with a camera that protrudes.

Instead of this, we could have slightly bigger phone with more battery life and same quality BUT non-protruding camera.

But no, we will have instead of this, worse battery life and camera which is above the surface, if this is not win-win, than what is?
