So apparently Apple is now copying the industrial design screw-ups of other companies?

Look, Apple: I don't want a professional-grade camera in my phone; kindly stop trying (unsuccessfully) to cram one into it. Thanks.

He's calling them "moaners"

I'm not adding to the discussion either tho, so i'll go back to trying to ignore these kinds of posts.

I can't imagine what kind of hyper-sensitive person could mis-construe someone saying that some people may moan about a product, as "name calling"...

That actually does look like me ;-)

This whole thread is indeed moaners who moan about whiners who bitch about people that don't give a damn. As I said, i should have ignored those posts.

It's alright, no offence taken - I hope you have a lovely day, God bless you :) sorry if I upset you, unintentionally.

"Todays word of the day is alleged"

think of it this way. most people will have a case on theeir phone that is the same or thicker than the height of the camera protrusion. so for most. the phone will still sit flat.

I think the gripe though is why not just build the phone itself that way. Why make the solution having to buy a second thing that covers up the world-renowned design?

I believe this whining is the market's sentiment of "thin enough" vs. Apple's ongoing push for "thinner". Now a part is going to have to protrude for the one-time spin impact of "thinner" when Apple rolls it out. The market has not been griping about the 5s being too thick. Yet Apple is solving that (no-ones) problem anyway at the expense of having to make a part stick out.

Who cares?

Everyone of you are just looking for something to criticize. Its nauseating.

Particularly weird, considering all you complainers wrap your iPhones in these hideous cases, which make both a protruding camera and the "design" or "style" of the phone, completely irrelevant.

Are we getting so thin now that components are sticking out of the phone.

How thin is too thin, I think we have our answer.

Exactly - shaving off about 3/4 of a mm not only extends the lens to snag on pockets and other items, but it also shave off a possible additional battery space - come to your sense Sir Jonny - keep all your junk hidden inside AND grace us with day long battery life for heaven's sake.

"Solution" would imply a problem, and the only problem I see here is people jumping the gun, based on hearsay. Even if this IS what's released, if this is a "problem", then I'm extremely pleased that I have a life which encompasses more than measuring the protrusion of my iPhone lens :D :D

I use a case with my iPhone so I don't see any issues with it sticking out a bit. It will probably help with photos not picking up the color of the case. My wife had a blue case on her phone and every once and a while it would pick up the blue color and make the photo have a blue tint to it.

No, you made me see i was being not so nice myself.

It would be nice if evryone tried to find out why the other one has certain opinions, instead of judging them and telling them they're wrong.. i should have done thesame :p

I know this is MacRumors, but I'm a bit tired of the rumors, the analysts, the random claims of having a part of a new i(whatever) ...

I've been staying away specifically because of that fact.

I agree - though I think Apple will want to tout the '6.1mm thinness' in their keynote.

I think if they do that then I hope someone at the keynote calls bull---- and reminds them that the protruding lens should count towards any thickness measurement. It's like me saying I'm super slim because I only measure around my neck and not my belly. :p

It's simple

If you don't like the way this one looks don't buy it and Apple will come back to their senses two or three versions down the road.

Brace yourselves people, eventually it's going to get even thinner. As of now the headphone jack is the largest opening on the iPhone. I see them eventually getting rid of the headphone jack all together. They'll make their beats headphones (as a earlier report suggested) and EarPods with a lighting port connection at the end plus a lightning to headphone jack for 29.99.

Just me guessing...

There's a lot of profit in Apple doing that so it does seem likely. Reminds me of Sony's relentless focus on coming up with proprietary standards whenever and wherever possible.

You say this now, but at the end of the day, nobody wants to be the lonely outsider at the party with a fat, ugly phone. Even if it means the battery doesn't last till the end of the night.

Oh brother, if someone is a lonely outsider at a party, I highly doubt a non-fat, non-ugly phone is going to make the difference. If popularity at a party is driven by the aesthetics of the attendees phones, that's NOT a party I'd want to attend.

I would bet my bottom dollar, if Apple would sell a thin and a not so thin version of the same phone, say Version a) 6.7 mm, protruding Camera, Wall huggers battery, form over function, and Version b) 8.5 mm, flushed camera, fantastic battery life, extremely solid body, that Model b) would sell better.

Probably right, but don't forget Apple are motivated by profits, not sales numbers.

Say version A here has a 35% margin.
Say version B has a 30% margin, due to the bigger enclosure and battery.

Version A would then be 17% more profitable than Version B.
Say Apple estimate Version B would sell more, but only by 15%, then releasing Version A would be the best choice in order to maximize total profits.

The "would version B sell more than version A if both were available" question doesn't matter that much to Apple anyway. I think they care more about "would version B increase sales of iPhones in general" as in "would it make people not choose Android any more than version A"?

The reason I say this is because for someone who would have bought an iPhone 6 no matter if version A or B was released (i.e. probably most iPhone buyers), Apple would effectively waste profits by selling you the version with the lower margin. They'd only gain if you'd have chosen a competitor's phone if version A was released, but choose an iPhone if model B is released. The proportion of potential buyers that fit in that category is probably too low to compensate for the loss in profits I just mentioned.

Not a fan of the protruding camera, from a design standpoint.

However, considering that most users have a case on their phone... won't that nullify the protrusion?

(personally, would like to see the phone be flush, and the extra thickness could go to a thicker battery)

Amazing how people can get so worked up over something they haven't even seen yet. Can't people at least wait for the phone to be announced before they start moaning about it?

Why are people so worked up over a protruding camera when Android phones has had it as far back as the GS2?

The iPhone hasn't had a protruding camera ever. That's 7 years! I think people need to get over it.
