Alright sorry to say but.....IT'S UGLY!

If you seriously think those two devices look identical... I'd make an appointment to get your eyes checked. You may have a serious issue on your hands.

Would you have preferred if they made it triangular, and ran Android's 5.35 Popsicle flavored salad dressing with a 6.3 inch screen?

I think you need your eyes checked! They made the screen longer and thinner. But it still has the same SHAPE! The shapes from 3 and 4 changed! The design in general! Cmon guys you are so hypnotized by apple products that you cant see whats in front of you. Robots!!! I dont want a samsung galaxy...thats why I love apple products...because they are appealing to the eye...generally things that are huge are not appealing to the eye!! Of course you have the few (like yourselves) that dont mind huge!!
 
No-one argues that they re-designed it, but you have to admit that the general aesthetic remains the same.

Or at least, it's closer visually to 4, than 4 was to 3G.

Umm no but they could have deviated from the iphone 4 design. Not that I dont like the design BUT I think we all had pre conceived notions that they would come out with a completely new design and shape! Alot of people Im sure agree with me! Also its LONGER..the only good thing is that it has better specs and is thinner.

You guys crack me up. "different shape??" what do u want? A triangle?? The new iPhone is much different. Kinda exactly what I expected it to be. What else could you want? I don't understand. You live in a dream world. Luckily there are a lot of phones to choose from. Go with what u like and post how much you love it in the appropriate forum. I think the new iPhone is beautiful and I will be ordering it on Friday. I'm totally happy. If ur not, move on. I've never once opened up account on an android forum to say how much I hate the new galaxy S3. You guys are rediculous. Carry on.

Wouldn't taller and thinner be considered as a design change? ... New smaller connector, new located headphone port... All signs of a different design. Again, you might want to consider that appointment.

I personally love the new look of it. Thinner, very sleek looking, the back is more durable and hopefully the phone will not need a case.

I think the black rim on the 5 is pretty ugly. Looks like an old iPod.

But then again, most people put their iPhones in bumper cases, so probably don't even know how nice the silver rim on the iPhone 4 looks.

No different from saying the general aesthetic of the 3G is close to the original iPhone design. Chrome border and rounded design, as opposed to the stainless steel band and squarish design of the 4 and 5. One can go even further and say all the iPhone models to date look essentially identical from the front.

Original:
- chrome border
- rounded design
- metal backing

3G/3GS:
- chrome border
- rounded design
- plastic backing

4/4S:
- stainless steel band
- squarish design
- glass backing

5 (and likely 5S):
- stainless steel band
- squarish design
- metal backing
 
Its not ugly. It looks EXACTLY like the 4S which is NOT ugly. The problem is, it just looks exactly like the 4S!!

Oh c'mon..where did I say that I hated the iPhone? I am merely expressing my opinion of the new design! It hasn't varied far from the iPhone 4 and 4S! Atleast the 3G went from curvy to flat!! Here we went from flat to flat!! DO something atleast!!

The only thing I find ugly about the phone and this is why my thread says UGLY, is the fact that it is longer!!!! Why is society today wanting a beast of a phone??? Phones arent meant to resemble mini computers!!! The iPhone4 size as it stands is the perfect size...let alone a great design minus the fact that most ppl drop and break them!
 
I was kinda hoping for more of a different design. I agree that it's very Similar to the 4 just longer. There many hardware upgrades which will be nice but the 5 is basically just longer.

Unibody refers to the fact that the main component of the body is machined from a single piece of material, including the mounting points for the internal hardware.

On the iPhone 4/S, the hardware was all mounted to the aluminum band. A series of mounting brackets were build off of that part of the body, but were multiple pieces. From there, you can begin to install the internal components.

On the iPhone 5, the backing + sides are machined from a single piece of aluminum, including the mounting points for the board, etc, meaning you can begin constructing the internal hardware of the phone right into the that single piece. This is how the Macbook Pros are designed, and why we have the word UNI in the word unibody
