LOLOLOL

never seen why sparrow was good so just gonna continue using the default mail app.

kinda sucks for those that really like it a lot though

I don't believe you understand the premise of a walled garden. Android has a checkbox that allows 3rd party apps to be installed - no walled garden.

I don't think many people that use the term understand the premise of a walled garden. Especially the ones that use it in a derogatory fashion. When a walled garden has a door, is it any less of a walled garden? Have you ever been to a walled garden without a door or some other entranceway? Does anyone think that a walled garden would be better without a wall?

:) Sorry for the random thoughts.

You're even free to install custom versions of Android (ie. unofficial upgrades) on many devices (I'm not saying android is better, I prefer jailbroken iOS).

Which has nothing to do with what is referred to as a walled garden.

iOS apps can only be downloaded/installed through Apple's Store = walled garden.

Only if you don't consider web apps to be apps. Which is completely reasonable. :) Google would probably disagree.

Apple has a nice walled garden AND a public garden in the same device.

If I'm gonna get hit with ads, which is practically all the time, I would rather see ads that I'm interested in. Unfortunately, Google is not monitoring me well enough...

Google, Microsoft, Samsung
You Apple fanatics are running out of friends, why can't we all get along?

Wow... just wow.

Let me try this on you...
It's pretty telling when Apple has to buy a 3rd-party voice control app (Siri). They have no idea how to create an intuitive user experience on mobile, even with the thousands of employees they have. Pretty sad.

The hypocrisy around here is nauseating at times.

No hypocrisy at all. Siri had a lot other unique technologies than just an app. It made sense to buy Siri because it would've taken Apple a while to create something as dialed in. Sparrow is just an e-mail client, user experience niceties aside. Google should have been able to replicate it in short order. Sparrow doesn't bring anything strategic for Google to the table, therefore it was a poor purchase, and underscores some talent or organizational deficiencies at Google.

Congrats to Sparrow team on their big payday but Apple Mail is all you need. The Apple Mail client is the best email client on the planet. It's the reason I switched to Mac in the first place. End of story.

I'd like to know why you prefer Apple's app to Sparrow...

I honestly disagree, and you switched to Mac because of Mail.app?

Hah, the door is open to web apps I suppose, but I'd call that a doggie door. Not nearly enough for my tastes. Id rather be in the forest with all the scary beasts and get to stretch out a bit and 'do what i want'.

Yes, I realize custom android roms have nothing to do with walled gardens, but it exhibits the greater freedom allowed by android.

I fail to see how a walled garden would be a positive if you were a proficient and safe computer user, all it does it place limitations on the device and insure apple gets a cut of all app sales.

Bingo....classic Microsoft move. Buy and then gut potential upstarts.

Hope it is doesn't turn out that way....

Is Google buying Sparrow and using the talent to improve GMail that much different from them buying lala.com and using them to enhance iTunes?

Mergers and Acquisitions happen in tech. In fact, looking at this wikipedia article reveals that much of the iOS that was 'innovated' at Apple was bought and integrated.

I'm not trying to take a dig at Apple here, but it does rather seem like it's one rule for Apple and another for Google on these forums sometimes.

Here's an idea

Why doesn't Google acquire BusyCal too? And maybe iBank as well? There's all sorts of software out there waiting to be loused up.

Why did Apple pass them up? Only heard good things about them.
My use of Sparrow on my Macs has been a really terrific experience. It seems that Sparrow would have been a perfect acquisition for Apple. I know that my use of Sparrow on each of my Macs convinced me to buy it for my Windows Laptops as well.

Apparently the only reason Apple did not buy them, after their initial negotiations, is that Sparrow wanted about $80,000 more than Apple could afford.

With some luck, this year will be the year that Apple pulls in enough revenue to join the big boys, like Microsoft and Google. Then we can all celebrate :)

Note sure about Sparrow for OS X, but Sparrow for iOS beats Mail for iOS hands down. This really sucks.

I don't care that it's Google who acquired them. The problem is that it's going to be killed.

Sparrow iOS had some awesome features, my email productivity on iPhone is seriously going to take a hit.

Often times I have a lot of junk email I want to trash. Having to select each one individually vs having a select all checkbox that would select them all for you is so annoying.

How would that work exactly? Are you referring to your entire inbox or all junk mail? If it can distinguish between legitimate mail and junk why are you seeing it to begin with?

Boggles the mind. I mean could they at least give us a select all option? Often times I have a lot of junk email I want to trash. Having to select each one individually vs having a select all checkbox that would select them all for you is so annoying.

Let me show you what my screen looks like at the moment

The spacing of things here is quite nice. I like it the way it is. I have not seen an app which displays this information in such precedence. It is beautifully presented.

Geez I hope not. Outlook is far superior to the Mail app.

:p Mail.app keeps crashing for me, and at least with Outlook, it's my personal management centre.

Why is everyone assuming that those of us opposed to this Google takeover are using Gmail? Are all of you so deluded that you think Gmail is the only email provider online? I feel like Google is the one with the reality distortion field now!

Facts about Google:

1. They make at least 95% of their income from selling ads
2. They are good at selling ads because they mine your data from a variety of sources, including email.
3. Google was recently fined by the government for circumventing privacy controls on Safari. They are desperate for that data! So much for the whole “Don’t be evil” motto.

Here is a quick rule of thumb: if a company doesn’t sell anything, then YOU are the product being sold when you use their services.

Have we all gone mad? Why just fritter away all of the last vestiges of privacy that we have just because we deem it “inevitable?” Why must we accept this fate? Would we accept AT&T screening our calls for keywords to interrupt the call every five minutes with ads? How far will it go? Will we allow them to install monitoring devices in our homes to track our every bowel movement so they can recommend to us Laxitive Brand X or Y? Seriously people—wake up and see the world for what it's becoming: an Orwellian dystopia.

As a fan of both the iOS and Mac clients, I'm really bummed about this news. It's funny, though, that Sparrow was running a 1/2 off sale on their desktop client through the app store. Get a few more bucks before selling out...

You don't have to be root to install applications not from Google Play and you don't have to be root to install other OS versions

WRONG! Owned several Motorola Android phones. You could NOT install other OS versions other than the ones they released without routing.

Maybe this is just Motorola, I personally cannot speak for other companies' Android products, but your statement is not correct for all Android phones.
