yea, I guess that really doesnt prove anything...oh well. I wasnt aware that current lineups use 16:!0
Well, 16:9 is the standard for widescreen TV... 16:10 is the standard for widescreen computer monitors. 1920x1200, 1680x1050, 1440x900 etc = 16:10 (or 8:5, whichever you want to call it).

No f/w 400 wtf!?! :(

If this is true and there's only one fw 800 port then I'm hooped!
I've got an Apogee Duet (into fw 400) and a Glyph PortaGig (into fw 800) setup to record audio. I know 800 is backwards compatible but thats for hard drives primarily, is it the same for audio interfaces? Everything just works the way things are and this possibility is unforseen and disturbing to say the least.

I might have to stick w/ the Penryn and live w/ the GPU issue if this is the case.

Anyone have any FW insight or know of any possible solutions? I'd prefer to get this update if possible. :(

Compare the prices and specs of a 17" MBP to this HP (customized) and tell me that. Or, if you really want a nice laptop for $1450, check out this Gateway. EDIT: Make that $1250; looks like Best Buy lowered the price.

You start to realize that the only thing the MBP has to offer is "thinness", and that doesn't make it a "Pro", does it?

OK, I went to the HP site and altered the specs to match a MBP with standard suite of software to match iphoto. imovie, idvd, etc. added 1 year of warranty which is included with MBP. I came up with $2100 after tax for the HP, $2800.00 for the MBP. So yes the HP is cheaper but it weighs 2.5 lbs more, has a 5400 rpm drive rather than a 7200 rpm drive included with the MBP and I am not sure if the HP includes firewire ports, gigabit ethernet, and I know it doesn't have OSX.

Since this is a brand new model from HP, I am assuming that the new MBP will come in at a more competitive price once it is updated.

So far I am not buying your argument that Apple is twice as expensive.

I'm not really sure why people didnt expect apple to phase out old technology.....

Because its STILL very relevant technology. Its a PRO machine and the 400 port is still very useful for audio & post production professionals.

Yes but apple has always been putting old tech out to pasture BEFORE it truly dies. I'm not saying its good or bad, i dont use FW, but no one can say they wouldnt expect it from apple.

I wouldn't worry about it!

The odds are good that this rumor either relates only to the MB. Or they are wrong about the MBP ports available.

Warning Tablet Speculation forthcoming...

The MacBook is dead and the MBP just got a new baby brother model but Pro nonetheless which means better specs through all 3 models. 13" MB Black specs at current Macbook Pricing $1100 Ai case like the rest. 15" models will drop the low end, the mid range is priced as the low end was and the 17" comes in at $2500.

So MacBooks are dead?

Yes, there is a NEW product line to replace the MB it is a tablet and it kicks ass. 12" Diagonal same aspect ratio as the iPhone and only slightly thicker, rounded edges with fold down ports ala' MB Air on both sides with magnetic closure, no phone sim tray it is a tablet laptop not a phone. It has the same glass surface as the iPhone maybe thicker is definitely durable. OSX Touch interface that is different but complimentary to the iPhone Touch interface. All apps are in a stack bottom left (easy to hit with the thumb) when hit it expands as do stacks all view types are selectable as well as a new view type. Apps can then be tapped and launched. Open applications enter the dock which now houses only open applications (can be set to classic view, hehe classic wow). Application icons all resemble iPhone icon in shape. There are new apps as well. This product is aimed at college students and young professionals and Apple has included iWork standard it will lose just a few of the more advanced features and Apple will introduce a Pro version at the current price point. There are new features within this suite of apps. Note view in Pages which looks like a spiral notebook and accepts input via a pen created by Apple. Its tip conducts the signal in adjustable sizes i.e. fine point etc. It is made of a material that does not smudge yet creates a small degree of resistance on the glass surface and it is extremely accurate and is meant to completely eliminate the need for notebooks. All notes will be searchable as well due to handwriting recognition. New is that you can also search shapes that you have created and saved, students can now search any page where they have circled something important. This same pen can also be used with the newest Adobe Suite, an as yet unannounced feature but it is in there take a look. The Pen is sold separately. This "Brick" will accept USB or Bluetooth keyboards and mice. It comes with a dock that has an adjustable tilt and it charges the brick as you work at a desk. It also has an onscreen keyboard that is adjustable in size, you can even split it and tilt the sections.

Thanks for the response - REALLY!??? Only a tiny cut on the price????Even though it is superceded???? grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
$300 off for current retail is normal for a MacBook Pro. Apple seems to be consistent with $550 off for previous generation refurbished. (e.g. 2.2 GHz MacBook Pro, 128 MB VRAM)

the tablet market and the laptop market are two very different things my friend. It wouldnt be the replacement of macbook.

First off, we're debating pure specs for cost here. That was agreement, right? Neither weight nor the OS nor tax were included. Bundled software does not equal specs, and if you want to go down that route, Windows apps similar to iLife are free for Windows.

Sorry, but HP's include a 1-year warranty. The warranty you selected was an additional accidental warranty which Apple does not offer.

I went for a dv7t series. I got $1479, to the MBP's $2800. Don't know how you got $2100. The HP I customized has a better graphics card, more HD space, 3GB RAM, and you can add Blu-ray for only $150. It has firewire (just look in the specs), and it's only 0.8 lbs. more than the 17" MBP, if that's so important to you.

It sure seems like you did something weird. This HP is half the price of the MBP, and yet has better specs, is barely heavier, and you can even get Blu-ray for $150.

EDIT: And 7200 RPM drives are not standard on either the 17" MBP or the HP dv7t. There is on option for them on both. But you can choose more HD options on the HP for cheaper, including dual Hard Drives.

no beric, your the only one that seems to want to stay on that debate, we like to look at the whole picture here.

iLife and other bundled applications are considered value added in OS X but not in Windows. There can be quite a few useful bundled OEM applications. Not to mention the wide variety of free software that replicates iLife functionality for Windows.

How many users consider iLife to be useful enough to warrant including it in the hardware price? I barely use iPhoto and that's it.

If you want the whole picture, the fact is Apple could cut MBP prices in half and turn a profit.

And your reply ignored my complete rebuttal to your idea that the HP cost "$2100", because it didn't. You ignore the facts when they don't help you.

OS X costs Apple nothing. They've far recovered their costs of development by now. The only thing that costs Apple is the hardware, the same of which sells by other manufacturers for a profit for half the price. Simple conclusion? Apple is charging twice the price as other manufacturers for similar hardware. I even rebutted your idea that the HP was "3 pounds heavier" by simply taking 30 seconds to realize it was only 0.8 pounds heavier.

Stop ignoring the facts and open your eyes.

I ignored the rest of your comment because i wanted to bring that one point to your attention (hopefully your not getting the impression that im attacking you, its not my intention). You need to understand that when it comes to buying a computer in todays world, its not just specs anymore.

And its the market that decides prices, and apparantly apple decided to see if the fish would bite at the current price and what happened? well the market sure as hell didnt shoot them down. People will buy what they choose.

? i didnt say anything about the HP because i didnt look into it. I beleive you were reffering to someone else.

Apple could much more easily insulate itself from the race to the bottom that other manufacturers were in during the PowerPC days. We are talking about the unimaginable x86/64 ones now. Style and value added software can only go so far until we fall back into hardware specifications and the price that consumers are willing to tolerate.

Hi,
I'm not going to buy a new macbook (mainly) because it doesn't have trackpoint, not because they're just the same inside as every other manufacturer and twice the price.

whats trackpoint?

Sounds like a lot of consumers crying about what they want a PRO laptop to be. Nimrods speaking about taking out the optical drive and making the books thinner.

Typical Apple consumers that don't do much work I say. Give me a real laptop that IS NOT thinner, but packs in just as much power.

How is it being blind, deaf, and dumb? Seriously, trackpoint and twice the price? Expensive yes, twice the price and you're buying from the wrong place.
