I think you should slow down with your raid on Apple pricing and realise that Apple updates their computers and specs at a few times in the year and seeing as we are nearing the end of a cycle it is very conceivable that a comparison at present to one particular manufacturer would make the macs look a bit outdated.
Newly released mac products since the intel transition have consistently been very competitive. They have to be. Its a result of the increased transparency, no longer can they hide behind "oh but G4's are twice as fast at lower speeds" (which they were).
When pc manufacturers try to match features and design they usually end up costing the same/more... e.g. Sony
and they run Windows.
For example take the Dell XPS one:
"defying popular perception, the iMac costs less than the XPS One. The base, 20-inch iMac costs $1,199 about $300 less. And even if you double the memory, and add a wireless keyboard and mouse to match the Dell, its still $1,399 $100 less than the base XPS One (though Dell is currently running a sale that wipes out the $100 gap). Even the cheapest iMac has a dedicated video card with its own memory, something the base XPS One lacks.
Plus, while Dell offers only 20-inch screens on the XPS One, Apple has higher-end iMacs with huge 24-inch screens for the same price, or less, than the higher-end Dells."

And the mac specs still arent that outdated. Even off your own comparison (
https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=6242190#post6242190), comparing base $1099 Macbook to the $949 HP with Core2duo at 2.0ghz (vs. 2.1 on macbook), the HP gives a
slower CPU, gives 1GB more ram, slightly update Integrated graphics, bigger hd, and 0.7" extra diagonal on the screen and a superdrive. Youre not getting all that much and even lose in some cases spec wise, for $150 saving. Its also fatter and heavier. It also doesnt come with the software suite you get with any new mac. It also only comes with/runs Windows. You can dual boot OSX and Windows easily and legitimately on any new Intel Mac. I love that about my Mac.
I can see where youre coming from with the MBPs cause you can come close specs wise for less but again you are also paying for design with Apple (a choice) but lets not get ridiculous and say Apple is charging double for the same hardware on everything, its nowhere near as dramatic. The MB/P's do need a spec boost which thankfully will be hear soon.
