I don't understand why people keep referring to page numbers. I'm running at 40 posts per page. Some post numbers would help though. ;)

@ Beric

I think you should slow down with your raid on Apple pricing and realise that Apple updates their computers and specs at a few times in the year and seeing as we are nearing the end of a cycle it is very conceivable that a comparison at present to one particular manufacturer would make the macs look a bit outdated.
Newly released mac products since the intel transition have consistently been very competitive. They have to be. Its a result of the increased transparency, no longer can they hide behind "oh but G4's are twice as fast at lower speeds" (which they were).

When pc manufacturers try to match features and design they usually end up costing the same/more... e.g. Sony and they run Windows.

For example take the Dell XPS one: "defying popular perception, the iMac costs less than the XPS One. The base, 20-inch iMac costs $1,199 — about $300 less. And even if you double the memory, and add a wireless keyboard and mouse to match the Dell, it’s still $1,399 — $100 less than the base XPS One (though Dell is currently running a sale that wipes out the $100 gap). Even the cheapest iMac has a dedicated video card with its own memory, something the base XPS One lacks.

Plus, while Dell offers only 20-inch screens on the XPS One, Apple has higher-end iMacs with huge 24-inch screens for the same price, or less, than the higher-end Dells."

And the mac specs still arent that outdated. Even off your own comparison (https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=6242190#post6242190), comparing base $1099 Macbook to the $949 HP with Core2duo at 2.0ghz (vs. 2.1 on macbook), the HP gives a slower CPU, gives 1GB more ram, slightly update Integrated graphics, bigger hd, and 0.7" extra diagonal on the screen and a superdrive. Youre not getting all that much and even lose in some cases spec wise, for $150 saving. Its also fatter and heavier. It also doesnt come with the software suite you get with any new mac. It also only comes with/runs Windows. You can dual boot OSX and Windows easily and legitimately on any new Intel Mac. I love that about my Mac.

I can see where youre coming from with the MBPs cause you can come close specs wise for less but again you are also paying for design with Apple (a choice) but lets not get ridiculous and say Apple is charging double for the same hardware on everything, its nowhere near as dramatic. The MB/P's do need a spec boost which thankfully will be hear soon.

allumanm? really?

aluminum maybe?

personally i would love to see the laptops in awesome colors PLUS the awesome specs.

I think my dream MBP would be a stealthy black anodized aluminum, with black keyboard. The design would be a cross between the MBA and 17" MBP but with a 16:9 high-res display. I don't care if it is any thinner but I would like for it to shed 2 pounds and have easy access to internal components.

I would like options for 250GB drive, plus dual 64GB SSD drives raided for fast boot, OS partition. Blu-ray would be BTO option with an option to do without optical drive in exchange for a second available battery. The Apple logo would glow cerulean blue for just a hint of color. Of course the Laptop would have options for a dock connector, in addition to all the available FW, HDMI, USB 2, ethernet, etc. ports currently available.

I know it won't happen but that is what I would like to see.

ow, i didn't know that. but here is a new rumored pic!

SDHC and/or CF slot? IR? Bluetooth? Swapable battery?

No, it needs a 3G radio. WiFi is a complete failure (oh wait, the current phrase is "EPIC FAIL" ;) ) for connectivity.

If my PDA doesn't have ubiquitous connectivity - it's worthless.

That's why my Ipod Touch sits in the drawer (where it drains its battery to dead all by itself), and my Windows phone with EVDO is with me always.

I love it... but where's the SCSI port? ;)

It also seems to lack an array of card readers for all sorts of formats, an Expresscard slot, PCI card slot, and so on. I figure all those must be on the other side of this sleek thing.

Sorry the other side, is for access to the built in ZIP drive and colorado backup tape system.

That's a great example, except that both "restaurants" are burger joints selling the exact same burger, only one of them have a different colour of dressing on it.

I had a great dinner in Manhattan with my wife and kids. It was stupid expensive compared to what I would spend, say, for lunch every day in the SF Bay area, but it was a GREAT dinner. It was a lot of fun, great food, and much more memorable than eating at the local family-owned take-out (even if the local take-out is great and better than the local chain)

Was my daughter's burger made from essentially different materials than those that make up the local In-and-Out burger? No. But the owner had higher rent, a LOT more expensive decor, and fantastic table service. My daughter was served with the same presentation and flare that my wife and I were served our much "fancier" meals. It was worth it, at that time, to allow my daughter have the expensive burger in a bistro in a great American city.

If you don't get qualitative differences, go back to your PC, in your trailer home (why in the world would you pay more per square feet when it doesn't help you eat or breath or sleep, right?) and crunch bits. I've spent a lot more on PCs than I ever have on Macs and I understand the qualitative differences. I spent $5000 on a Toshiba Tecra laptop (Pentium 120, 48MB RAM), and it was a crude brick, but one of the better laptops of 1995.

It's the same basis on which people choose Honda's vs. BMWs vs. Chevy's vs. Vauxhalls. The Honda owners look over at the BMW owners and say "I get better gas mileage, my car costs less, and it's practical. I ~so~ own the road." The BMW owner looks over at the Honda driver and says "Life's too short to be driving a practical, but utterly mundane vehicle. If I'm going to spend 2 hours of my day in a car, I'm going to enjoy it, even if it's going to cost me several thousand dollars a year to do so".

And guess what, they are BOTH RIGHT.

Dude, you forgot the Blu-ray. :p

That's on the other side along with all the memory card adapters and some more USBs. I don't know about you but when I go out on the town I need about 7 USB slots to load all my items.

On a serious note. What the heck do you need with firewire anyway?? I haven't had the first product come with that type of connection.

welp...

If i offended anyone by posting it, oh well. Cry me a River... I just got home and i was going thru e-mail and this was sent to me by my brother. Excited, I thought I would share it with you guys. Had no idea it had already been posted...No need for the rude replies and crappy comments.

More importantly I'm tired of hearing about people bitch about Apple's pricing. If you think the iMac is too expensive, then don't buy the damn thing. We don't care if you go out and buy a Sony, just do so and shut the hell up.

Your right! Why complain about how expensive it is... But you know what, the new Sony Z series thats oh so slim & sexy, its pretty damn expensive too! Right up there with the MBP if not more with some extras.

Hey I bought the same Tecra in 1995. Great little laptop. Mine actually still runs fine. I still have the 24 floppies that contain MS DOS,Windows, and Toshiba's custom installed software and drivers disks.
