Forgive my ignorance but isn't USB2 faster than firewire 800 (albeit the usb bus has always been fairly problematic)? Anyone know?

USB 2.0 is peaking out at 480mb/s (theoretically), fw 800 at 800mb/s. But in real life it's even worse. USB 2.0 have a rather big overhead, and it isn't really getting anywhere close to it's theoretical maximum, especially when it has to transfer big files. Even FW400 (maxing out at 400mb/s) is faster when in sustained read/write mode.

wow can some of us grow up and stay on topic please? If you want to argue please get each other email, AIM or other ways of contact and do it away from MacRumors please

I just want the new macbook to be an overall performance increase. Then match that up with the release of Snow Leopard and we'll have something there

Thanks newbie for setting people straight, but you are wrong.

I think this has been a thoughtful and well balanced thread. Message board are a place for civil debate and spirited opinions. That one of the reasons they are fun.

Spotted...

When you say, "spotted" do you mean they have been seen lately, or do you mean they will have spots? (Like the Dalmation iMac!)

I noticed the same thing. A pretty poor attempt at conning us to think that's the real deal. He's taken the picture in front of the mirror not realizing that had the iSight taken the picture, the logo would be the right way.

Joshua.

haha. idiot.

Remove DVI?

How can they remove the DVI port? what about connecting to projectors and external monitors. I know on the PC side there is a USB-VGA connector you can buy (they just gave me one for my work PC, so that I can have 3 monitors). But come on - this is something we need on a laptop.......

Not sure I like the idea of removal of ports. Firewire - ok, as most things are USB. But we need more USB and also the DVI  I say leave the port options alone on the macbook. I like them they way they are.....

*Edit - ok I could live with a mini DVI port - but Apple should start including the full size and vga adapters for free......

insulting someone's way of thinking is not civil debate.

Grow some thick skin or don't come to a message board because most message boards have strong personalities who have strong opinions.

i'm sure my skin is pretty thick and I can handle anything you throw out at me, I'm just stating my opinion that people need to grow up and stop insulting others. It is rediculous and immature

i love you guys too.... oh feel the love... feel it damn it, or your just some nub that fails in life.....

Not thrilled. Would be very bad if they remove FW400. Also not excited about black inserts on the display bezel. Let's hope at least they don't move to glossy screens only on the MacBook Pro.

you could always paint yours if you want it Dalmationed!

Oh no, kind sir, if you refer to the original thread it mentioned the new MacBooks will be "spotted" I, for one, can't for that design...

Can I have a flowerpower one for the wife too please?

Omg! Look @ the trackpad

Garbage, move along.

Maybe if they are getting rid of the FW400, they're adding a third USB port? That'd be an acceptable trade-off in my opinion...

Because you're a consumer.

The only equal trade off would be another FW800 port, or an eSATA port, nothing else.

actually i want mine colored green like the new nanos

Dammit Dammit.... NO full size DVI???

I've been waiting months to buy a laptop for business. We are a design company with 30" displays, it is absolutely essential that Macbook Pro's can be used with the 30" displays.

Our designers take the laptops home to do work and plug into displays there, then come to the studio and plug into the 30".

I can't believe Apple may remove the full size DVI fromt he PRO laptop. JUst another step towards consumer products and forgetting the core users who kept them alive for years! (and who spend £1000's not £100's)

I'm not pleased to hear this and will be emailing sjobs@apple.com

I think his point is well taken. All manufacturers. in the name of making their notebooks more "svelte" have tried to downsize or elimnate ports in order to shave a couple of mm and grams from the unit size for asthetics, not usablity. It's time that users draw the line in the sand for the manufacturers. If you want to build the uber tiniest "Paris Hilton" notebook, go for it, but keep the rest of your lines with existing standards and connection sizes, until you come out with an entirely new connection.

i agree completely. Taking things out just to make it smaller makes no sense. :apple:

Ah now you're talking!
Nine different colours for MacBook Pros! Excellent, I'd buy all nine!
That's one for every day of the week!!
(old Sam Fox joke!)
