Perhaps we'll see Firewire 800, and maybe a faster Firewire introduction as well?

Back in December 2007 an article (http://www.electronista.com/articles/07/12/15/firewire.s3200/) stated this:

The IEEE 1394 group says it will begin to ratify S3200 in January [2008] but should complete the process as soon as early February [2008], clearing the route for shipping products later in the year.

It would be nice to see FW3200 get a headstart on USB 3.

I have never really used firewire, but thinking about it to connect my external harddrive

Because you're a consumer.

I don't know what that's supposed to mean, but all I can tell you is that for as much as I love FireWire, especially for booting in target mode and using my MBP as a hard drive when need be, or connecting other computers this way - I find that the one thing I wish I had more of on my MBP is USB ports. I always have a mouse connected, meaning I constantly have to choose and swap on the other port. No, I don't do much video/final cut work, so I don't need the FW for a camera connection.

True. And it goes along with the idea of dual FW800/3200 ports or at least a FW3200 and an eSATA.

And maybe that will remind the consumers whining about more USB ports that it's a PROFESSIONAL laptop... or a laptop trying it's best to be a PRO machine.

PointyCollars:

Bluetooth will be your best friend in that situation. I barely use my USB ports since I do a lot of video editing with capture drives and P2 card readers and so forth connected.

Why the insinuation that because my chosen profession doesn't utilize many FireWire peripherals that I'm somehow not a "professional"? That's a pretty biased statement.

But about the BT mice, you're right. :)

Everyone can benefit from faster transfer speeds, no matter what profession.

I'd be screaming about eSATA instead of FW if eSATA was bus powered.

Sorry about the insult. The thread is filled with posters that want a more consumer MBP to lower the price. The absurdity of taking out the optical to make it thinner infuriated me. I can understand taking it out to add another HDD, but not to make a 17" Air.

I just remembered my top priority is for them to fix that audio jack hiss issue. I will be using my laptop for audio recording and this is a big deal to me. New form factor hopefully will fix it.

Well, you asked for it. Just read my post here. Don't forget that both of the HP's are much better than the Macbook specwise.

People can always argue that Mac OS X is worth paying double the cost for what their hardware is worth. But they can't argue the fact that Apple's hardware is double the price.

Thanks for linking your previous post. As I said in a post pages back, I believe the macbooks need to be price competitive and aim for a pricepoint.

And it makes even less sense to have an ultra thin laptop and and a lot of cable adapters to carry around!

Agreed and also carrying around external devices such as DVD Drives that many here think are outdated. I vote keep them all and "concentrate on innovative features and functionality"! ;)

I use it ALL the time as that's what I use to connect to an external device that I utilize for Time Machine and also when I want to boot up Tiger.;)

I agree, but the blind posters here need to post some links to these machines that are half the price of the Macbooks with the same specs. I have seen $500 less, but not $700 or even $1000 less.

I may be a little late for the mac prices convo but I still want to throw my 2 cents in...

Macs hold there value. No other brand you can sell a few years down the road and get a $100+ for it unless you bought a gaming notebook. If Apple were to drop the prices drastically I do not think they would hold there value so much anymore.

Maybe an aluminum MacBook would satisfy those who want a more consumer MBP. I can't think of any reason why someone who wanted a consumer-grade laptop wouldn't just buy a MacBook, unless it really is the nice aluminum case that makes them want the MBP.

I think removing the optical drive would be beyond the point of ridiculousness. I use it constantly. DVD backups at work, ripping and burning CDs at home. I'm one of those kooks who still buys CDs and supports independent music. Sometimes the only way to get a virtually unknown band's music is to buy their CD at their show.

amen to that. i couldnt agree more. its just like a bmw. you get what you pay for. and not all of us can drive a bmw. someone has to be top of the line. and it might as well be apple!

But certainly Apple wants to impress it's investors? Which means they have to grow. And in order to grow and capture more market share, they have to be price competitive. BMW's and Merc don't want to be GM or Ford or Toyota.

The BMW analogy has always troubled me because Apple does not want to be BMW or Merc. They want to grow grow grow and in order to do that they have to have appeal to the mass market, not just pros and fanatics.

A lot of the growth they've had cannot be sustained on coolness alone. Time to shake things up a bit.

Their prices will continue to drop, their products will continue to improve. They will always be innovative and design leaders, but now they have to grow the business and capture a larger chunk of the market by being more price competitive.

The thing is it WILL be thinner. That's what Steve has been hinting at for over a yr or so that the Apple products will become thinner. Which I personally believe is crazy. They are not making things thinner to better functionality they are doing it to say "Its the thinnest... ever". The MB and MBP will probably not be any lighter then it is now it will just be thinner. WOW!

As for the optical personally I am for a choice in the matter. I think it would be great if Apple will now allow you to choose the optical, something else,or nothing. I would also like a choice if I want or do not want that creepy isight :shivers:

Agreed. The only thing that separates the two is the graphics and the screen size.

For me, I have been thinking about taking out my optical to install another scratch disk on my 17" book, and just carrying around the optical as an external used through FW400.

I use it to burn DVDs for clients and such.

I am seriously crossing my fingers in the hopes that Apple just keeps the MBP the same size. I have no heating issues, no whines, no warping, no bad color or anything with my current machine (purchased for fear of MB keyboard and other bad redesigns). All I ask for is the modifications needed to get it up to par with other desktop replacements, not the ones with SLI, but at least the faster chips and 1GB GPUs.

Well now maybe I will finally replace my 12" powerbook G4! It has been an unbeatable computer. It has its second keyboard, second battery, second (larger) harddrive, its maxed out on memory, and it's running 10.5.5. like a champ. When I travel to remote parts of the world it goes in my carry on. With its classic lines and compact size it often generates comments even today. I have wanted the power of the core 2 duo since it came out, but there was always something...nasty plastic case of the MB, MBP too big...this could be the Goldilocks version.

On the mini-DVI, don't sweat it, its amazing what you can do with a mini-DVI. With the help of a $9.95 DVI-HDMI adapter I display DVDs from my pbook on a 42" HDTV: presto I can watch PAL DVDs from any region on a US TV...

Let me know if you want to sell that trusty g4 :D
