im still really hoping the aluminum macbooks come in the same colors the ipods did.

I WOULD KILL FOR A YELLOW MACBOOK. how sick would that be!!!!

anyone else want a colored macbook??!?!

Those would look awesome and would definitely go over at colleges! Apple would make a KILLING!

As long as they provide some sort of improved GPU, we can easily say that the new MBs are gonna be the REDEMPTION for those that have waited all along for a PB 12" replacement. And another reason to blow my bank account once more because of Apple products (my dear iBook G3 needs a rest)...

With this new generation of notebooks, Apple is gonna MOP THE FLOOR with the ridiculous offerings by Dell, HP and Sony, either because of superior design, superior OS or both.

There is NO COMPETITION for the most successful digital media and personal IT company in the world.

GO APPLE!

If there's anything I don't want my next laptop to resemble, it's a cross between a Macbook Air and an aluminum iMac!

Okay. Just throwing this out there. I'm not used to arbitrary speculation, so bear with me...

It seems to me that a Macbook Air and aluminum iMac have completely disparate form factors.

Unless they're combined into one...

a la, the iMac like "dock" for the notebook pics that were going around a few months ago.

Like I said, just throwing that out there...

If they are going slimmer like everyone is saying they will then those "cheap" blu-ray players won't fit. They have a very slim one, but that is way too expensive.

Blu-ray won't be on the new ones.

I doubt that Apple will include blu-ray in the new MBPs as well and definitely not in a standard MB.

I do see Apple adding Blu-ray players/burners for the Mac Pro and possibly Apple TV at MWSF 2009.

Wow. Just wow.

For me the thinner and lighter the MBP the better! My shoulder is half disintegrated from carrying a PowerBook for the last 4 years -- and I'm ready for a rest.

Nope, just DVI for video out on the current MBPs. They make a dongle for DVI to S-video (and composite for that matter) but just the one port on the MBP

Ouch, my 5 year old powerbook g4 has both. I guess that makes both HDMI and DVI a long shot. Seems like DVI never really became a standard anywhere else? Apple wouldn't revert back to a VGA type port would they?

i want a black alu mbp ...
i hope they fix the probs of the current gen books.
my mbp just sucks to be honest. speakers are hissing ears are hissing and beeping and its already my third replacement.

btw i think dell etc are going the right direction.
sure apples design is still the best and os is nice but its not so much better than normal notebooks.
the most i hate about apple is the policie... did they ever held a official statement about the current gpu? almost all notebook suppilier did and extended the warranty for the gpu i wish apple would be more honest to their customers.

Hard copies are infinitely superior imho no internet means your finished and work stops ? I believe you are in the minority most people especially in the work environment burn discs i know i do.

People I know in the workplace send files via e-mail or FTP. That's far, far faster than sending a disc. And if they want a backup, I.T. does that onto multi-TB RAIDs and tapes in a tiered strategy... again, far more efficient than any DVD.

How does eliminating the fw 400 port reduce the footprint?
Agreed, that seems a little bizarre. I use both of mine currently: DVD burner and flat-bed scanner on the FW400 port, and external hard disks on the fw 800 port.

I hope they don't eliminate it. :(

I hate to state the obvious, but if this is what you want Apple makes this product, its called the Macbook Air. If you want an optical drive and ports you buy a Macbook or a Macbook Pro.

Sure, I'd love one... but the price is vastly higher than that of a MacBook. I'd gladly take a regular MacBook with the Optical drive yanked out of it and the case reduced just by that much.

It's a terrible idea. Everyone on here is so hung up on Apple ditching the optical drives and ports on the new notebooks - that isn't going to happen. They might reduce them, as the article states, but for serious use, a MBP without an optical drive and ports is entirely useless to me, and I'd rather not carry around a 'brick'. I want everything in one nice, shiny case.

I agree! If someone wants a MBP light with no optical drives and no ports, then just go buy an iPhone :apple:

I know that there are plenty here that don't use the superdrive that often or the FW port, but I do and having an ACD which has built in FW, USB 2.0 and HDMI connections would as many have said cause a lot of people to get really pissed off if :apple: lost the HDMI and FW port. Not to mention the countless owners of just FW hard drives out there.

I think many fail to see that the media professionals out there like professional photographers and videographers rely heavily on having the superdrive for on the road jobs, HDMI input for linking with ACD's especially us that love and need the dual screen real estate for work.

Put the beer away, your not making any sense man!! DVI never really became a standard anywhere else? Eh? What R U talking about? DVI is the defacto standard for desktop PC's, and therefore the vast majority of monitors.

VGA port? Are you mad? Have your marbles fallen out? VGA port is analog; why would they go back to that crufty old stuff? Plus VGA port requires extra circuitry to do the analog conversion.

with no hdmi, does this mean blu-ray is off the table?

How does that logic work? Blu-Ray doesn't require HDMI, they just want HDCP (which can be disabled in software or hardware) and HDCP works over DVI and DisplayPort.

I do believe that Apple may be waiting until there are drives that will read Blu-Ray and burn CDs & DVDs, so they dont' have to have multiple drives in a system, although I do expect the ability to BTO Blu-Ray in the next update or the spring update, at least in the MacPro, since it has two bays.

I'm actually getting excited for new systems because of the possibilities, plus my 6 year old PowerBook is really showing its age.

i just hope for a lower price point, although i highly doubt it..
Price is fine as-is. You gotta pay to play. I just hope they don't ditch frequently-used features in the name of saving a buck. Or do something really boneheaded like try to make the thing even thinner (and therefore hotter running). Let function define the form, not the other way around!

Damn, if they really get rid of the DVD drive, firewire 400 and full-sized DVI port I'll have to buy a current generation model refurb or used... I'd hate to carry all that adapters and an additional box around. Atm I use my 3 years old PowerBook to work at and with various design agencies, I often have to burn data CDs or DVDs, plug in different external drives, etc. Now I carry the laptop, power adapter, small external fw400 hd, fw400 cable, A6 wacom bamboo tablet, wacom pen & usb cable for the tablet with me. No need to have an additional item (external DVD drive) + cable + fw adapter too.

Who wants a slim blinky laptop for browsing skyping and being cool can buy the mba, leave the "pro" laptops alone please.

My stab at upcoming MB & MBP specs

Here is what I am guessing will be the specs of the new & upcoming MBs & MBPs.

MBs

Use Intel G43 chipset
Core2duo P8400 2.26Ghz or P8600 2.4Ghz 3MB L2 cache (these processors run 30% cooler than the previous gen 8100 & 8300)
1GB RAM upto 4GB (ofcourse Apple might continue charging arm & leg for upgrades)
Intel X4500 video
Superdrive?
multitouch trackpad (glass??)
other features as previous gen
Price - $1000 & $1200 respectively ??

MBPs
Core2duo T9400 2.533Ghz or T9600 2.8Ghz 6MB L2 cache
2GB RAM upto 4GB
nvidia 9600M GT with 256MB & 512MB
other features as previous gen
Price - starting from $1800 ?? or would that be cutting too deep into Apple pockets??

Comments?

actually peeps they mean it's carbon footprint. just getting rid of heavy metals and other such "hurtful" things to the environment.... (i think, maybe not)

I have to totally agree, MBA is way overpriced. Inferior processor, too thin for a regular laptop Hard drive, and jack up the price. Who cares about an extra .05 inch on the laptop. Maybe Apple got all of their "Ohhhh, Ahhhhh" money out of the MBA and will reduce the price? I know, I know, Fat chance.

cross-over

The article mentioned a cross or hybrid between an MBA and MB for the new design. That, matched with more competitive pricing would bring more folks in I believe.

If you go to a best buy and look at not just the number, but diversity of brands and spec offerings in the realm of laptops and the fact that 90% of them are less than $900, then bounce over to the next aisle where the Macs are at, there is nothing that is sub-$1,000.

Make that $1,000 macbook tops tops tops, but don't start the consumer out at $1,000, start the macbooks at $699. That would be a terribly easy decision to make.

FireWire S1600 and S3200

In December 2007, the 1394 Trade Association announced that products will be available before the end of 2008 using the S1600 and S3200 modes that, for the most part, had already been defined in 1394b. The 1.6 Gbit/s and 3.2 Gbit/s devices will use the same 9-pin connectors as the existing FireWire 800 and will be fully compatible with existing S400 and S800 devices. It will compete with the forthcoming USB 3.0.[16].

I wonder if this means these devices will support FW3200 with firmware and software updates?
