I was expecting a 10" that was literally light as air.

I've seen this statement from you on another thread. What does it mean? (other than not using "literally" to mean literally; sorry, I live with an English grad student!)

The 10" netbooks I've seen or owned range from 2.6 pounds to 3.0 pounds. The Air is ~3.0 pounds. There's one laptop (older Vaio) that manages a sub 2-pound weight. The Air has a bigger footprint, naturally, because it has a 13 inch screen. But it's almost as light as the new 10 inch netbooks. I wasn't a Mac forum dude back then...did people expect the Air to be lighter as well as more feature-filled? The expectations of the refresh seem so high...except that I also have an unreasonable expectation of a light macbook with almost silent fan.

wow.. this really went off topic.. lol..

soo anyone else hoping for an 12-13" aluminum macbook w/ bluray or glass trackpad.. ?

opening day.. I willll own 1.. no matter what it is.. unless its pink.. which really wouldnt suprise me at this point.. cmon steve get your ass in that shoe store and kick his ass.. and make some decent cheap portables !!!

Not exactly. A 12" MBP with blu-ray would be rocking. I'd rather have functionality over a glass trackpad.

I think we'll be lucky to get blu-ray in any of the MBPs, let alone the MB. As for size - I really wish Apple would re-introduce the 12" MBP. Never has a product been more missed.

Literally means for the price that they charge for a machine thats only good for netbook style tasks when I lift it up I expect to feel next to no weight in my hands to as if it its literally light as air to justify said charge.

Lil billy: Oh the macbook air is insanely expensive i'm just going to get myself a netbook.
Lil timmy: Have you held an air? It feels like it is literally light as air!
Lil billy: Holy crap a 13" notebook thats feels like it is literally light as air! I will take it!

:p

So, the literal meaning of the word isn't what you used ;)

Take out "literally", and that exchange makes much more sense. This way, by including the word "literally", you might as well have this exchange:

Lil Joanna: Have you seen and felt my stomach? It feels like I am literally pregnant.
Lil Billy Jean: Holy crap! It's big and firm. It feels like you're literally pregnant. You are pregnant!

Literally is what you say when you mean something literally! When you make a hyperbole, ie "exaggerated claims not meant to be taken literally", then throw "literally" afterwards, it turns the sentence to FUBAR. ;)

Truer words have never been spoken on this thread. Not only is the product missed, but the clamoring for a more powerful MBAir suggest the Mac market still needs a lighter more mobile power house machine. I couldn't imagine the amount of users still holding onto their G4 12" Powerbooks in hopes that Apple would at least give us a MacBook with dedicated GPU.

p.s. iEdd. Excellent use of the word FUBAR. Not too many know how to wield it correctly.

1. in the literal or strict sense: What does the word mean literally?
2. in a literal manner; word for word: to translate literally.
3. actually; without exaggeration or inaccuracy: The city was literally destroyed.
4. in effect; in substance; very nearly; virtually.
[Origin: 1525–35; literal + -ly]

—Usage note Since the early 20th century, literally has been widely used as an intensifier meaning “in effect, virtually,” a sense that contradicts the earlier meaning “actually, without exaggeration”: The senator was literally buried alive in the Iowa primaries. The parties were literally trading horses in an effort to reach a compromise. The use is often criticized; nevertheless, it appears in all but the most carefully edited writing. Although this use of literally irritates some, it probably neither distorts nor enhances the intended meaning of the sentences in which it occurs. The same might often be said of the use of literally in its earlier sense “actually”: The garrison was literally wiped out: no one survived.

Dude- any dictionary is years behind modern usage. People that cite it on forums appear to also be years behind modern usage.

What you need to do, as a forum-poster, is throw your dictionary in the fire.

A NOTE TO ALL FORUM POSTERS-

forums are not formal. They are not literary or critiqued upon by anyone of an academic stature. They're fricking archived chat rooms.

Some of you students need to learn the difference. When you bring your academic mind into forumania... you essentially drop-the-ball.

Now... save your rules for your prof and, ****!

Aw come on, is this how language has evolved? :(
Will "hot" soon mean "cold"?
I just went off Oxford for literal [hover mouse over and press ctrl+cmd+d]
Of course, now that literally can mean metaphorically, what do you say if you actually do mean literally, "It's literally literally as light as air."? :p

We digress too much. I agree with your original point, and though I don't think the MBA needs to be literally as light as air, it is too heavy and large for the ultraportable market. :)

Edit: ndstrenge, it's all in good fun - or lack of photoshopped laptops to discuss how fake they are... Something like that.

Not really because they are sometimes updated

Kinda paid a lot of for my macbook so um no.

NOW **** AND TALK ABOUT ALUMINUM MACBOOKS

I will admit that you all are good at taking heat and moving on.

God bless the 21st century. :D

Now... why hasn't this skill yet infiltrated Washington?

GET ON IT!!!

Not really because they are sometimes updated
not the accredited ones. Accreditation requires review. One would never cite something not reviewed. You can't play it both ways, juevon.

Oh come on... you can play the innuendo game, but I can't? Nobody told you to throw your macbook in the fire.

I like you, puffnstuff, but watch your argument. Don't fade it. ;)

I've been holding out for a 12" laptop for several years. I had a 12" iBook I bought in 2002 and I still use my 12" PowerBook I bought in 2004 as my only computer.

I will be over the moon if they release a 12" notebook. :D

NOW **** AND TALK ABOUT ALUMINUM MACBOOKS

Hehe, sorry about setting this off! Some (nerds/me) actually talk about this kind of stuff for fun. Another good usage to debate is "ironic". Would it be ironic if the October 14th refresh only included a heavier version of the Air?

Disappointing if there isn't more to it. If aluminum casing makes the masses celebrate then anything will.
Of course there is more to it than just aluminium casing. I've read the rumours of what could possibly be inside, and the new MacBooks should be a huge improvement on the current versions.

I am extremely happy that I have not purchased a plastic MacBook and kept using my 12 inch G4 PowerBook waiting for this. I will be getting a new aluminium MacBook as soon as they're released and it is what I've been waiting for! :)

Heh its alright I know antsy everyone is I am too

I wouldn't use the word ironic I would use the word stupid.

With the macbook rumored to be aluminum, multi-touch, thinner, lighter at a lower price point on top of being faster then the Air and possibly having non integrated graphics there would be no way in hell they could sell any MBAs.

I am honestly pondering what they are going to do with the MBA because if the MB is going to be anything like what it is rumored to be it will kill the MBA.

I missed 12" notebooks. Every time I see some one with a 12" PB I drool with envy. I myself am thinking about dusting off the ibook and doing a couple mods to it and using that instead of my MB.

They should definitely bring back a 12" computer. They were very popular, as evidenced that I still see lots of 12" powerbooks around. People love them, hold on to them, and still use them. I wonder why they ever ditched it?

*sniff* I just want more memory (both RAM and in SSD). Is it unreasonable?

Haha, nice out-of-the-box thinking...you should be in marketing!

If your first thought after seeing the word "air" is Air, then perhaps you should be in marketing...

I am honestly pondering what they are going to do with the MBA because if the MB is going to be anything like what it is rumored to be it will kill the MBA.

Do you mean rumors that seem to be somehow credible? Because apart from outwards appearance (aluminium, keyboard, screen) similarity to the Air seems to originate in idle speculation on this (or perhaps others as well) forum. I don't know where people got that idea of new MacBooks being so much thinner and lighter. Perhaps because deep in their hearts they want an Air, but for MacBook price? ;)

If you miss the 12" as much as I do, might I suggest:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/

Specifically, either:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbook.html
and/or:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html

And tell 'em specifically what you like/liked about the 12" and why you think they'll make money if they produce a 12" MB/MBP. That may be more effective than mere whining. ;)

P.S. Gotta love how they make the Pro feedback page black. And hate how they never keep the OS version number up to date on the feedback pages...

*sniff* I just want more memory (both RAM and in SSD). Is it unreasonable?

No, and I bet you'll get it too.

You know what I really want? A Silent Killer Macbook-- no fan plus a SSD. I've been doing research for weeks trying to find such a laptop, and only came up with one that's 13 inches or bigger: the Panasonic Toughbook. The old Dell X1 had no fan, and HP's new thin client has no fan but only has a 2 gig hard drive plus Windows XP "Embedded Version" :(. I know plenty of people want a silent laptop, and it's probably possible with a low voltage chip and SSD. So if I post this request on every board, quantum theory dictates that there's a chance of it coming out. :)
