Is this a 'jump the shark' moment?

Why is this kind of thing on page 1?
These photos are all over the net and they don;t mean anything because they are rarely true. Even if true, why glorify snippets of info that aren't particularly revealing?

We're starving for more news on this?

The noobs are desperate for a redesign of an incredible system?

Speaking as one of those "noobs" I don't know we are so much starving for a redesign as in fear of one. If it only going to be a refresh (better processor, more memory, more HD) then great - shoot, even as a noob I realize that others can't tell if you've got an 08 or 04 MacBook Pro. However, if it is a big redesign, buying the old model now can be a real downer.

I agree, the MacBook Pro design is still way ahead of anything the colored plastic Windoze market is pushing out the door as "modern." What it really needs is that MacBook Air quality screen, faster and larger hard drives (I can buy a WD 7200rpm 320gb HD for $229 - what in the world could Apple get them for on a volume basis), and make the HD accessible like the MacBook..

I have a First Generation MacBook Pro 15" 1.83GHz, and I love the look of it. I appreciate that Apple is developing new aesthetics for the machine but I must say that the current case design is beautiful.

Those are the noobs that I'm talking about. The ones who want it to look "new" and "sleek" and "fresh".

Go back to Windows. That's not what the MacBook Pro is about.

Us "noobs" are waiting for Apple to update the screen resolution from 1440 x 900 to something more respectable for a "Pro" machine. Say what you want about how "timeless" and "perfect" the design is - but there are some pretty basic things that need to be updated before I drop $2000 on one.

lol, so are you in charge of Apple now? You seem so defensive about the product and god forbid anyone want anything else

...watch for the cycle to repeat itself soon...

Say what you want about how "timeless" and "perfect" the design is....

Wait until Apple updates the old (since Jan 2001) design metal laptops - the same droids who wax on how "perfect" the old design is will be the loudest ones in the "it's now so much more beautiful" choir.

And then the rest of us - those who think that a laptop is a tool rather than a fashion accessory - will whine about how function has once again been sacrificed for form.

I agree.

It's always interesting how people fight against any change but once it happens, 9 out of 10 times they are the same people to flip-flop and rave about the new product.

It's much simpler: Some people will defend, applaude and love what Apple does, but most importantly, what they do NOT do. That is why we call them fanboys.

Anyway, you know the type: Each and every product is perfection in itself, no improvements or changes possible in their minds, and if you say that you want something slightly changed, slightly better spec'ed, or even better built, they ask you to buy a "windoze box". Hell, to them even the iPhone 3G really IS "revolutionary". You know, because Apple told them so.

why do you fight this battle so hard? Eventually it will get a redesign. Its just like cars... you may love the 1967 ford mustang and think they should have kept that body style for the last 40 years, but a whole bunch of other people would like something a little more fresh.

theres a reason we're not typing on these anymore...

there is, was, always will be, and there will always have to be some sort of progression. The people who get set in their ways are the people who fall behind.

I don't care. I just don't want it to become consumery. Yes, update the screen resolution, yes, magnetic latch, yes, whatever.

Don't make it look like a PC. Don't make it look like a MacBook or Air.

why not? If they can make it thinner why wouldn't they? If they can make it look even better than why wouldnt they? Clearly the picture does not look like a pc (and if theres any PC that does look like that then they just copied apple...) and the macbook air is far from unattractive, so whats the problem?

Ok ladies and gentlemen, we have a war here!

theres no war because you cant win an opinion. The fact is apple hires designers to make sure they dont get stuck in a rut and no matter how much you love the current design and think its perfect, there will always be some way to improve it and thats why Jonathan Ive makes more money that any of us will ever hope to see

change is the only constant, or so I've heard.

If its constant we might as well learn to accept it.

The problem is compromise of power. If they can make it as or more powerful with tapered edges, then whatever. I don't want them making it all tapery, personally; especially if they have to compromise power.

They aren't going to compromise power in a MacBook Pro.
There is no way.

You're comparing a Pro machine, to that of a machine that was just built for basic tasks and being mobile.

Apple's designers are amazing..
I personally am not worrying about what they put out, because either way, when I see the new notebook for the first time, my jaw is going to be dragging on the floor.

I don't see how a tapered case will compromise power, components are smaller now especially with motivinas logic board.

What would be compromised, the processor? certainly not... what would they put in as opposed to the current and future?

the memory? Thats just silly.

the graphics card? It wont be taken out, they wouldnt do that, and their all the same size (laptop cards that is) so why would they put a worse one in?

the hard drive? no... it wont be for a while that they're replaced with SSD's... but i dont see how that would be a compromise.

the specs will increase, the beauty will increase, the size will decrease. That is the pattern that apple products have always gone in.

In all that, you're forgetting one crucial bit: Heat dissipation and the airflow associated with it.

Yes, things get smaller and so on, but that doesn't mean you could build, say, an OQO with the power of an MBP.

Btw, this is an OQO:

That dude is Sir Isaac Newton, the father of modern calculus and one of the greatest physicists who ever lived.

LOL, I do know who Newton was, please stop with the college knowledge

The thing is, from memory, I wasn't sure if the old Apple logo was depicting him, or some other person, and I frankly couldn't be bothered to go look for the picture.

hahaha i'm aware of that, but the point is that apple doesnt make things smaller unless they can handle it. Its not like they're going to make the MBP as thin as the Air, that would be impossible. With motivina comes a smaller logic board and nehalem (i believe) will have smaller chips which means less heat which means apple gets to thinnovate!
