I didn't read the whole thread, but this is what the current MBP lids look like when taken apart. The plastic apple is glued to the back of the aluminum, then there is a white piece of plastic film that allows the backlight from the screen to show through. (wood desk is showing through the apple in the picture:) )

This is exactly why I hope the logo is no longer backlit, or lit in a different way. The opening creates a weakness in the case which allows it to be flexed at that point more than it should. This is why I have several odd white dots appearing around the center of my screen on my macbook pro, and I have taken very good care of it. Weakening the case for the sake of making something more pleasing to the eye is a poor design decision.

The holes in the apple logo are for different colored LED Diodes, Apple did this because they want their new backlit logo to look like this. LOL

And yet you are talking about Apple, a company that is perhaps infamous for often forsaking functionality or practicality in the name of aesthetics. This would explain the "ghost screws" on the MacBook, the lack of volume buttons on the iPod touch and the lack of most anything on the MacBook Air.

NO way to replace the battery?

Either:

1. These pictures are fake
2. Or, Apple plans a killer external battery option.

My hope is for #2, as an owner of the MBA.

who says there is no way to replace the battery? all we have is a partial shot of the bottom...

has anyone else noticed the image looks awfully similar to the bottom of an ibook? especially the feet

Toshiba has delayed their latest Montevina laptop from mid-july to September. :( Hopefully this is just Toshiba and doesn't mean that Montevina itself is going to miss it's July 14th ship date.

Only Fab 35 (Chandler, AZ) is cranking out 45nm chips (other then the pittance they can get from the R&D fab in Hillsboro, OR). Fab 28 (Israel) is now looking to be six months or more behind schedule and will likely not be at capacity until early 2009 instead of last month. And the conversion of Fab 11X (New Mexico) will not be complete until early 2009, as well.

So I expect both the 45nm Penryn's for Montevina and Nehalem's (which will also be 45nm) to be somewhat scarce for the next six months, minimum.

soooo, when will i see the new model?

because i'm sooooo waiting for new macbook pro to come out!!!

i just can't live with my 4 yr-old powerbook that crawls w/Aperture:(

You sure know how to put a wet blanket on the fire. Can't you give us some good speculative news.

Like maybe Apple will cut a special deal with intel for the first series of Montevina platforms with 45 nm penryns because the limited supply won't be enough for the big pc vendors. So intel sells first bulk to Apple with later sales to Dell, HP, Lenova, etc when supplies increase.

Gaah, please no tapering!
Don't get me wrong, I really hope Apple comes out with a new MBP design, but no tapers please. It is my belief that the MBP look so good because it looks solid, and functional. I believe I rather embarrassed myself on another thread on this very topic.
It is thin, has small radius curves to improve rigidity and eliminate stress points, and is absolutely jammed full of silicon goodies. Aluminium absorbs blows, and conducts heat really well.
I do believe there is a difference between Apple's design philosophies of products with and without the "Pro" moniker. Products without, MB and iMac, are designed to be really "funky" looking, form over function and all that. Although they really are pretty damn functional, so why the hell are we all worrying so much? However I do reckon this is where Apple tends to "experiment". Bubble iMacs, Lampshade iMacs, bubble iBooks, puck mice, etc. Maybe it's the successful ones that move to the "Pro"? Maybe we should be expecting black around the screen and a black keyboard?
The "Pro" machines tend to look the part. I mean, the Mac Pro looks powerful, and it is, although it could do with an update...
And the "Air" seems stuck half way. Not powerful enough for the "Pro", but too expensive for nothing.
So, now I've made myself an arty fool once again and destroyed my science/engineering cred, I'll cease and desist.
All in all, quit bitchin'! If Apple makes a new design, it's gonna be awesome. If they fail, then they'll keep trying until they get it right. If they don't try, we keep the awesome design we have now. We really can't lose.
Unless Apple decides to mix translucent white and tangerine again...

I don't think they would do that...

It's actually the other way around. While other vendors sell a lot more machines than Apple, the bulk of their sales are low- to mid-range PCs that won't see Montevina chips for a few years while Apple's switch to Montevina will require their entire MBP and/or MB lines to be switched at once. The cases in which Apple did get chips from Intel before others was for very high-end machines, like the with Mac Pros, that would showcase Intel well, thus offering free advertising, and increase Apple sales but still wouldn't be too difficult for Intel to handle so early on in production.

This can't be a new Macbook. It's too big. You can tell by computing the ratio of the width of the apple logo to the width of the case. I compared this to ratio found by measuring my Macbook, and the case in the picture is much wider compared to the Apple logo. From what I can tell, the picture is a 15" model.

Who says the size is an absolute? I'm pretty sure the logo can be scaled.

If they were going to scale the logo, they most likely would have made it larger on the 17" MBP and smaller on the Macbooks so that it appears in scale with the size of the case. But, they have kept it constant across all lines of notebooks. I see no reason for that to change. Cheaper to produce, too.

I hope they don't use the rainbow looking logo....that just isn't classy looking..

I prefer the current logo....and they should keep it lit up too.

It makes the Mac recognizable from anywhere....

I don't like dots in the logo if that's the plan to just show a few dots... pffff..

Anyway, at least they are working on the new designs....I hope either by the end of 2008 or for MacWorld 2009 they will be out.

You do know the dots are for the LED backlet logo and the logo doesn't have the cover peace on it yet

LOL, Chris. Once again: There are no LEDs in the logo. There never will be. Well, unless Apple suddenly decides to complicate matters, use more watts and make the screen-case thicker for no other reason that "it would be great to do it like this".
