Give me a blackened aluminum casing for the redesign (as an option) and I'll be happy. I do care what it looks like . . so what? It doesn't make me a noob.

The looks are extremely important to the Macbook Pro . . . A large part of the reason Apple was able to capture their current portion of the marketshare was the design of their products. I agree that they wouldn't compromise the power of the laptop for looks, nor should they. That's why the entire line was created in the first place, but I think it's in need of an update.

I don't care how many people say the current Macbook Pro look is 'timeless', it's not. It may be timeless in the same way the Parthenon is timeless, in that it'll still be beautiful. Still, the look will (if it already hasn't) age when compared to newer designs and look like the technology of yester-year.

For anyone scared of a redesign, when was the last time Apple has released a design/redesign that you've hated?

hahaha i'm aware of that, but the point is that apple doesnt make things smaller unless they can handle it. Its not like they're going to make the MBP as thin as the Air, that would be impossible. With motivina comes a smaller logic board and nehalem (i believe) will have smaller chips which means less heat which means apple gets to thinnovate!

The problem is, that the Air, as it is, DO have problems with heat, resulting in core shutdowns, AND they had to use a 45watt charger, because otherwise it would overheat, resulting in a slow as molasses charging.

Apple has always pretended that they thinnovate, and their powerbooks, beginning with the Tibook was their first "thin fully fledged laptop". However, that had problems with heat too, resulting in flaking paint (yes, it was titanium painted with a primer, then painted with a "titanium" colour).

Puck mouse.

I'm aware of that, but the point is this isnt the macbook air. It wont be less than an inch thick (or at least not much less). Tapered edges dont mean that its going to be thick as paper, it just means its thin at the edges. Maybe they even made it a little wider to account for it, who knows?

Actually, any laptop, even rather thick ones, are compromises. Be it weight, speed or heat-related.
A 2.5" 5400RPM drive is one such example. Otherwise we'd have 1TB 3.5 inch drives, running at 12000 rpm. Or 4X256GB SSD-drives.

Btw, I agree that one isn't "newb" because one would like the looks to change. Personally I'm tired of the cheap anodizing. I'd like a proper black tool, thank you very much.

I agree with the puck mouse. THAT was a product I truly hated, just like I really disliked the toilet seats (the very first "iBooks").

Wow.
If your only redesign that you didn't like is a stupid mouse, then you have NO reason to worry about this update.

And yes, I hate that mouse too. ;)

No. The MBP is certainly not the MBA. The point isn't that, but the notion that Apple "will never make something where the shape makes it troublesome".
My point was never about the MBA, but the mere fact that Apple has no problem designing something where form dictates function and not the reverse.

Yes, case in point: The tapering of the MBA: If you taper the edges, you have just created a problem for yourself. Apple had to make a fold-down hinge containing a few ports. Further, they made the footprint bigger than it would have needed to be, had the edges not been tapered that much.
The idea, that if you want tapered edges on the MBP, one could simply make it bigger in order to contain the same innards is again a non-engineering solution, where you let the form dictate everything else.

Imagine putting an inch of "wedge" outside the entire macbook pro: It would simply just be useless space, taking up space, and that for no purpose other than to look "neat". Why would I want to add such a thing, making MBP bigger than needed? Some dislike of square shapes?

Most PC's today can't match:

  • 400 MHz G3
  • 100 MHz bus
  • 64 MiB RAM
  • 100 Mbps ethernet
  • Rage 128 graphics
  • 16 MiB VRAM
  • 10 GB hard drive

Are you kidding?

Well, I think he was thinking "good design", not the specs.

However, the only one of that type of computer that looked neat, even despite it being white was the eMac. That one at least had symmetry and a unison colour scheme going for it.

he was speaking of design.

and in response to tosser... if they dont taper it, i really dont know what they'll do to change up the mbp. They have to refresh it, its starting to loose its charm.

I'm sure they'll think of something, they always do;)

As Tosser and Super Intendo said,
I had the design in mind.
Design, being the way that it looks.

No doubt that a PC can pull off those specs.
But again, for its time, even those specs were good.

think of how different the blackbook, the Tibook, and the MBP looks. There's plenty of room for different design without tapering. Even if they don't want to make it more complex.

I know that but they cant keep the same rounded rectangular prism look forever, there has to be some way to change it up. Make it square like the Voodoo or tapered like the air or something. (the Tibook looks hideous by modern standards, by the way [although for its time it was beautiful and impressively thin])

I'm just saying... in keeping the alum. there's only so much they can do to change it up.

I make one joke and you jump on me...

Then I read almost 40 posts from you about wanting to have Steve's babies, wife jokes, silly pictures and other useless drivel!?!? ;) :)

there were no official threads for having steves babies, or wife jokes. And the silly pictures were just point proving ;)

I like the phrase "useless drivel" I'll remember to use it sometime :)

also i was in a fit of excitement over the apple store being shut down. In those kind of situations, I cant be held responsible for my actions ;)

[Sarcasm On] Yeah, Aiden can't you recognize good design when you see it! [/Sarcasm Off]

Wasn't that the stupidest looking device every to be sold. My god it was ugly!

Haha, indeed. Also, they began with that dude under the tree. Remember that?

Edit: You found it! :D

I'm sure you know him but you can't call Isaac Newton "dude"!!!

You can call me dude!!I'm just an ordinary guy but Newton definitely wasn't a dude!!!!

Well, he was a dude. A brilliant dude, but nonetheless. Would the term "bloke" been better? :p

NO way to replace the battery?

Either:

1. These pictures are fake
2. Or, Apple plans a killer external battery option.

My hope is for #2, as an owner of the MBA.

I didn't read the whole thread, but this is what the current MBP lids look like when taken apart. The plastic apple is glued to the back of the aluminum, then there is a white piece of plastic film that allows the backlight from the screen to show through. (wood desk is showing through the apple in the picture:) )
