I have never seen the way they are assembled but couldn't the holes be for the wiring that backlights the Apple logo???

Uh, they just put a hole in the back of the screen and cover it with a semi-transparent Apple logo. There's a giant backlight that makes your screen shine. Nice feature I think.

Amazingly FAKE!
Except the proportions its ditto old MBP
The current Apple logo is evenly backlit and the circles will provide very very uneven lighting

I call fake!!!!! It looks like this picture was taken in somebody's workshop. I think some wants a MBP so badly, but can't afford it, that he is making his own :)

Besides even the MBA has a backlit Apple Logo. So if Apple would bring out a new MBP it would surely have a lighted Apple logo.

But I agree it is time for the MBP to shed it's skin and grow a new one. The current design is getting old fast. Even though I have owned two MBP's (currently have a 2.6Ghz 15")I never like the way the casing was constructed. It just doesn't feel solid.

Umm.... no it isn't. Check the picture again. The logo is landscape just like they always are (Plus, a tablet wouldn't need a top shell like this.

Umm...the logo is fine but the unit itself is in portrait. This could be the back of a "tablet" with the four corners to be filled with rubber for the unit to sit above a surface. ;)

Excuse my ignorance but what am I supposed to be seeing here? The top half looks exactly like the current sans backlit logo. Can't even tell what the "bottom" is.
Exactly what I was thinking. Absolutely *no* difference to the casing of my MBP (apart from the backlit apple logo)...

no... the unit isn't in portrait... That's TWO pieces sitting there, the top and the bottom flipped over and both clearly in landscape as usual... not sure what you are talking about or if the photo is blurry or something on your screen maybe?

Either way, it's just normal landscape. Sad though.

and to aaalex and others - it's different. The battery of the bottom piece is clearly going to be in a different place, and the top has more slanted edges closer to those of the MBA - probably giving it a thinner appearance. It's minor, but big as far as design goes and what we could possibly see on the other side.

:)

Ok sorry. I thought that was how they did it but I wasn't totally sure. Either way, even though these leaked images tend to be true lately with the iPhone and everything, this is obviously unfinished and I SERIOUSLY SERIOUSLY doubt Apple would get rid of the backlight. People come on........seriously......stop and think..... give Apple some credit!

Thanks for the explanation. Actually I hoped that the MBP would receive a major redesign. Those pictures don't look like that. But I get the point now and you're right: There are some - minor - differences.

Not to sound like an old fart or anythin, but I think the current MBP is perfect as-is...

I have two complaints with the current design:

1. It's a nightmare to replace the hard drive.
2. The ports are too close together; I can't comfortably plug a Y-adapter into the Line In without blocking off the Headphone and USB ports.

Ha, you're right. Long day at the office and it's only mid-afternoon. *sigh
I thought that was a strikethrough where the text says apple.pro :p

Looking at these photos I must say I like the old design better. But that's just me - I also like the old iPhone design much more than the new 3G.

Just a speculation here - I think if this is a real design, the bottom is significantly shorter, because there is a plastic part that finishes it - just like the first iPhone. Maybe that will improve wifi-conectivity and will lower bottom temperature or something?

I'm definitely going for a :apple: MBP and I think I'll get the current one. It's good enough for me.

I think they should/will use the entire width of the bottom part for a huge battery

I don't see a removable battery! like the MBA, I think there is a chance this could be true, remember the patent pics that looked like those from the MBA? only more connection ports.

one more thing: would it be possible to cram a Nehalem Cpu in such a small casing?

so in other words we'll be getting a MacBook Pro with a non optional glossy screen that only displays 6 Bit colors and no Bluray Drive...
Two of those three are already true for the MBP, so apart from the glossy screen being mandatory in your hypothetical, not much changes.

You're forgetting the need for a removal battery on the MBP.

I think the coolest thing would be a shiny black Apple logo with just the edge lit in white. I like them now but I also wouldn't be heartbroken if they went with non-backlit.

mmmm yes, that would be nice.

Why put individual LED's in when it's sitting behind a full LED screen/backlight?

To obtain a more vibrant color, a different angle of dispersion, brighter, generally more control such as blinking/pulsing to signify different states.

Maybe, who knows, but I would have chucked an LED in there years ago personally.

Can anyone else comment on this idea? I was thinking this.

Would a huge battery enable high end GPUs in the MBP for the first time? Power consumption has always been more or less the only reason we've been graphically 12 months behind PCs.

Which is exactly why I was being so cynical about it. There's too much focus on margin and not enough on quality these days at Apple.

I see no difference either.

To it is more troubling that Apple didn't make any successor to PB12. Air probably in some (hopefully not distant) future would become more workstation alike. But at the moment hardly sufficient as replacement.

And personally I see no point in overhauling MBP design. I think MBPs are way too practical and any change might break the balance which took years to work out.

^^^^^^^^^^^
Magnetic latch, new keyboard, bigger trackpad... RAM and HD accessible like on the MacBook...

I predict a chrome logo. Too bad--I'll be sorry to see the lighted one go.

Or like on the front of the iMac, shiny black plastic...

that's way in my opinion there won't be a major redesign. just a few tweaks, like larger multitouch pad, new keyboard, maybe a little slimmer or thinner but nothing too much. hiding the screws, improved access to hard-disk, magnet latch. i like the actual design, but these tweaks will refresh the overall look and feel of the MBP. ;)

If the new MBP doesn't have a backlit apple logo I'll wall to Steve's house to spank his ass and punch him in the face !!

Why no one is thinking this might be the next MB?

Hmm, honestly Im surprised that not many people mention about the pictures could be the next MB. I mean, the only Apple notebook lineup that is not aluminum is the MB and I think Apple will announce an all new Alu MB in MW09.
