Apple makes a profit because it designs, makes and sells products at a price people are willing to pay. Nobody is forced to buy a Mac an iPhone or an iPod. The day such purchases become become mandatory is the day I'm willing to entertain discussions about "obscene" profits. Until then, I'm not interested.

I don't like Amazon. I think its "price check" App, which effectively encourages people to go into local bookstores and scan barcodes, is an example of the worst sort of predatory cut-throat business practices. I think Amazon abuses its position as a mail-order supplier to evade state and local sales taxes - taxes that hard-pressed local governments need to fund the roads, schools, police and emergency services we all need. The dollar or two you "save" by buying a copy of the latest Steven King or Jonathon Franzen novel from them is a dollar in income or property tax you'll find added on to your bill someplace else.

If I buy an iPad or download a copy of Lonely Boy from the Apple Store, I pay local sales tax. If I buy a Kindle Fire or buy the exact same song from Amazon, I won't. Please explain to me how this is any way rational, decent, or "fair."

Amazon is an ugly example of the sort of "damn the consequences" capitalism and outright manipulation of the tax code that has brought our country to the state its currently in. The fact that Amazon is destroying local businesses and local government while simultaneously not making any money, tells me its a company I'm not interested in doing business with.

We will quietly ignore how Apple has structured their company to avoid paying US taxes on the billions it's storing offshore.....

The crack whores for sure!

1) it triples the chance you'll get some sex when u want it since whores can be pretty busy

2) have u ever tried crack? It's AWESOME!

3) Supermodels can be kind of uppity and it's most likely she'll short u on your time and not really act like she likes you

LOL...Me, you and Charlie Sheen should meet up sometime, we'd have a blast dude, no doubt about it. A weekend to remember...or maybe not!

The only drawback I have seen is the page-turning effect is slow and ugly on the devices. Other than that, its a superior reading experience unless you are camping and don't have an exterior source of light.

Completely Disagree

The iPad makes my reading experience much better and does not strain my eyes. I use the manila background and various fonts to make it the most pleasant of reading experiences. Looking at unnatural etch a sketch screen kills it for the Kindle....

What's to ignore? Why would Apple pay US taxes on money that it made and stored offshore (where it paid the appropriate taxes)? Do you not see the difference between that and avoiding paying sales taxes on money made and stored in the US?

I think the ad is on target.

As a man with 3 kids I can guarantee I`d be buying three Fires before I`d buy a single iPad for my kids to use.Yes I`m aware that makes it $100.00 more than a single iPad.
Well worth it for my piece of mind.

I also don`t know why anyone would need three devices.
I have an iPhone and a Macbook Pro.

I work on the Macbook and read on the iPhone.

Love the iPad but have no use for one.
I`d probably buy a Fire for myself before I bought an iPad because I`m way more invested in Amazons ecosystem than Apples because it`s more versatile.

If price is so important how is it that Apple sold 15+ million iPads last quarter? Until Android/Windows tablets get close to Apple in the apps department I can't see iPad sales slipping much. How many tablet specific apps are out there for Android?

That's nice. But guess what? When Amazon (or ANY e-tailer) doesn't charge you tax - it's not as thought taxes shouldn't be collected. Technically, by law, the consumer is then responsible for paying taxes. So while convenient to have already paid tax and for Amazon to handle the transaction - they ultimately aren't responsible for states not getting their fair share. The ultimate responsibility is on the tax payer.

I'm not saying I agree or think it's easy/convenient/realistic. But that's the law. And if you think other companies (like Apple) don't take laws to their absolute limit to benefit themselves - well then - I really don't know what to say other than I guess you won't be patronizing a lot of businesses.

Amazon isn't avoiding anything. See my earlier post. The consumer is responsible for paying sales tax if it isn't collected.

I couldn't pay attention. I was too worried about keeping my attention on the hot MILF.

Its got a valuable point in the commercial though. Yes, YOU CAN buy 3 different fucntioning Kindle devices for specific needs for cheaper than a single Ipad2.

however, this logic can swing both ways.

There are a lot of people that want only ONE device that can do everything. Might not do EVERYTHING as well as specific devices, but it does cover the bases.

I know as an avid reader, who can go marathon 10 hour reading sessions on both tablets and e-readers. Eink devices are the best for reading novel like print for long periods of time. No LCD screen compares.

Going to a tablet for reading, you absolutely make some sacrifices, in order to gain the wider range of functions that a tablet provides.

if Space and carrying requirements are limitted. you're more likely to want one multifunction device that does everything, than having to remember to bring 2 or 3 different devices with you.

You've never actually used a Kindle, have you? The impression you get from the screen is very much akin to physical ink on a physical piece of paper.

For pure reading, the Kindle trumps the iPad. Course the iPad can do 1000x more, but that's not the point here. If you want a tablet just to read books, the Kindle is the far better device.

A lot of the time its not about the apps. A lot of people barely use apps, if at all with tablet devices. Its more about the experience, ease of use, and web browsing really.

Plus most people are blinded by the shiny factor of Apple products. The iPad definitely isnt the best tablet on the market at the moment, but the exquisite marketing campaigns Apple produce make it seem that way. Unless you desperately want that Biology Encyclopaedia with 3D models that makes you feel smart, there are plenty of other better alternatives, i.e. ASUS Prime, Galaxy Tab 7.7, etc.

That being said, the super high res screen in the iPad 3 can only help improve sales. When the time comes I will most likely trade in my PlayBook and go back to the iPad, depending on how OS2.0 turns out AND providing Samsung dont go and announce a Galaxy Tab 10.1 with a Super AMOLED Plus screen. Not matter how high the screen res is, Apple use screens that are garbage compared to Samsung. They really need to use some of that $80billion spare change and invest in some awesome OLED screens.

So what if you're single with no kids? It's a focused ad if nothing else...

Then you can buy any of the 3 devices by amazon acc to your needs and at a lower price than that of ipad...but of course kindle isn't ipad but if it suits you then for sure, this deal is the BEST, right?

I'm not sure how that changes the fact that they are avoiding paying a tax that local business are responsible for. Nothing illicit about it. But it is a competitive advantage for Amazon. Customers are more concerned about the price they pay "right now", and don't necessarily consider any future tax implications.

Yeah, I wanted to buy a Kindle Fire, but I was afraid all the cool kids wouldn't like me if I did.

So I bought an iPad, and got mugged.

This is one of the funniest posts I've read this week. I hope you were just being funny and didn't really get mugged. But if you did, know that I'm only laughing at the way you phrased it, not at your misfortune.

Let's be real guys ... you can't downplay the value proposition of getting 3 Kindles for the price of an iPad. I think Amazon is smart to play this angle since it puts some perspective on how much money you are really spending.

No, the fact that Range Rovers are bad trucks with poor reliability makes the Kia Rio a better car.

You could have picked a better comparison, like a Honda Ridgeline or Toyota Sequoia.

STOP not praising Apple! Regardless of what anyone says, even if it makes sense, you MUST say good things about Apple!

Now, to be honest I think Amazon is definitely playing a good game there. Three Kindles for price of a heavier iPad is good, but it will still always end up in the hands of the end user, and what they will be using it for.

For example, I can't run Pages Mobile and Avid Mobile.

Personally - if I'm on the beach and/or on vacation - I'm more likely to take my kindle to read then my iPad. Sure it's easier to read in the sunlight. But more importantly - if something happens to my kindle (sand/theft/etc) I'm out a lot less than if I brought my iPad.

But it also depends on what I want to do while on vacation. If I want/need to do higher level computing (email, etc) - then I would bring the iPad.

But ultimately - the state SHOULD be netting the same in taxes. The fact they don't is more about individuals bucking the system than Amazon.

Again - I am not saying the model is good. Just replying on top of the poster who implied that Amazon is taking money out of state's pockets.

They might be shooting themselves in the foot a little here. Often companies like to point out their product can do more than one thing, takes what other things do separately and merge them into one device. A big selling point. This is saying to do what an iPad does you need to get more than one device and carry them around.

The marketing tactic makes sense, but it's certainly not genius. Everyone who buys an iPad knows it's more expensive than the Kindle. They buy the iPad because it better suits their needs/wants.
