The only one I'm interested is the paperwhite, and it's the last to become available. :(

That's what I'm most interested in. I've got a current Kindle, but since I use it every day an upgrade that as nice as this one seems is worth it to me. Maybe it won't be an immediate purchase, but it will be on the list.

And I've got a New iPad (which I also use every day). But it is just easier to pull the Kindle out of my bag and read it on the subway, so that is the one that I go with.

These all look like great machines at great price points. Even the $69 Kindle (which is the one I got for $79) is a great device and frankly something that pretty much everyone who reads books should own.

The truck has to catch up with the deer too, before leaving a bloody pool on the pavement. The sleeping giant is wide awake, and its offering is undoubtedly good enough for IT-departments to truly need a good reason not to pick MSFT (personally, i'd say its superior, but my point holds regardless). From an enterprise perspective, going with MSFT "just works", to speak Apple-tongue.

As for your second remark, i think you are wrong. First, touch is becoming ubiquitous. Perhaps not touch screens, but in the coming years we'll see rapid adoptions of trackpads, smart mice, and other ways of intuitive ways of interacting with the new interface. Second, the "touch interface" is essentially an interface you really dont have to spend much time using, unless you actually want to: the desktop is still there for all purposes necessary.

Also, MSFT has an ace up their sleeve with Kinect, that could easily be integrated in future AOI-kits, if necessary. Combined with the other things mentioned under point one, this - i believe - will make the transition fairly seamless.

---------------

Think about it: if you were to convince an IT-department, already standardized on MSFT, to buy iPads instead of W8 tablets - what would be your core argument? Can you, honestly, think of even one that would be convincing enough?

Microsoft greatest strength is its already big in business which will definitely help.

There were already tablet versions of Microsoft OS. They have not taken off. Even in this tablet craze, I'm doubtful we are going to see a wide adoption of Win8 Pro tablets ( Not talking WinRT tablets ) unless a major over haul into how a desktop OS works on the tablet. I'm talking some major innovations, not just tweaks.

I'll just play devil's advocate here and say that iPad will have all of the same functionality as a WinRT tablet and is cheaper than a Win8 tablet, and many of your users may already have one at home. Microsoft knows that the consumerization of IT is where this is all headed.

This is what tablets are worth anyways. Nothing but simple web-browsing devices. You want more, you gotta wait for upcoming Intel tablets.

The interesting thing there is that Win8 tablets will probably get a big boom because of iPad and WinRT - they'll be an easy upsell if you want the full desktop experience and they're far more functional than Win7 tablets.

Both of which are fixable, as the device and operating system matures.

For such a buggy platform and lack of intuitive UI, their Kindle Fire gen 1 was rather successful. The new Fire offering Amazon just announced today takes it up several notches.

As a consumer, I am interested in seeing the iPad Mini and the new Fire HD battle it out in the market place.

True, but that means those problems actually need to be addressed.
I aggree the new offering kick things up several notches.

I think Apple is about to see serious competition between Amazon and the forthcoming Microsoft products.

Consider that when Jobs was let go from Apple the place fell apart and was on the brink of dissapearing. Now, Jobs is gone permanently and already it looks like things are starting to stumble (questionable new iPhone and will we really see a worthwhile iPad mini? Where the hell are thr pro machines, updated iMacs and notebooks?) AND they are faced with some great competitive products. In a handful of years they could be relegated to a niche company again.

Agree. Considering that the original Kindle that came out "only" 5 years ago was 399 - oh how times, technology and pricing has changed!

They said the same thing about the laggy Android issues. But thats why better hardware is not always the answer. Better software/hardware is a better solution.

I find the iPhone/iPad often had better performance on less hardware, then competitors with better hardware.

What is "more" really? Editing documents - can be done with any Bluetooth keyboard and an ARM tablet. Gaming - serious PC gaming won't be done on any tablet that you can actually hold in a hand. I don't see what I do on a desktop that I won't be able to do on any ARM tablet if I really needed to...aside from recording music with professional software, of course. And I doubt I'll get that out of an Intel tablet either.

Very uninformed.

I browse the web, edit photography and video. Write reports and papers, create illustrations and 'paintings'.

You need to get out more.

You're looking at this wrong. It's not for people like you who download large amounts while on the road. It's more for people like me, who don't want to have to pay yet another ridiculously overpriced connection fee just so they can get their tablets online beyond wifi.

I can't see how anyone can complain about the data deal. Like I wrote earlier - you get a $10 kickback to use for apps and then you get the SAME data plan the iPad had for 250mb but for $3.33 a month vs $15 a month.

Someone really needs to explain to me how this is remotely "bad."

There are also 3gb and 5gb plans available. Just like with other mobile devices and I would find it almost impossible to believe that ATT would charge more for these plans than they do for other mobile devices.

So for the casual user - they save a TON of money.

$180 (iPad 250mb/month) vs $40. Plus if they will have saved some $ going with the Fire vs the iPad at the get go. Note: I am not arguing which is a better device or anything remotely. But for people buying the Fire - overall cost of ownership is less and for many worthwhile.

You're not qualified to say if it is excellent or not. The last Kindle Fire was a joke.

Define joke.

wow, just wow. 1920x1200; and apple is going to release the ipad mini with 1024x768???

Lol. Sad.:apple:

8.9" > 7.8"
If you wanted to complain about the 7.85" iPad mini being low-res, you'd be better off comparing the 7" 1280x800 Kindle to the 1024x768 iPad mini. The iPad mini loses that comparison.

The new Kindles WILL HAVE FREAKING ADS. So all you fans get to look at ADS on your new device. ENJOY!!!! What a joke. Oh, and the resolution was wrong. Oh and Nokia didn't use the actual camera. Desperate pathetic wannabes.

Update 12:58 PM: Amazon's Kindle Fire HD press release clarifies that the resolution on the 7-inch model is 1280x800.

HAHAHAHA!!!!

The Kindle really does look good, but it's somewhat pointless to buy if you already have an iPad. I've heard it's better for reading than the iPad, but the iPad seems good enough.

That is a higher resolution than the 7.85" iPad mini.

My Kindle Fire is a poor performer, is thick, and is heavy. It's been less than a year and is seriously outdated even by this year's model. I regret purchasing it.

AT&T's new plans will be similar to Verizon's sharing plans, I don't like how the new Fire doesn't really fit with that but it is certainly cheaper.

If you bothered checking the website, you'd notice that a version of the Paperwhite is also offered without the ads for $139.

We don't really know the resolution of the iPad mini yet - it only makes sense that it would be iPad 1/2 resolutions but we're doing a lot of assuming here.

Yes, it's just a supposedly strong rumor. Either way, Macclone should not be laughing at the Kindle for being low-res compared to the iPad mini unless he somehow has a prototype iPad mini was higher res than rumored.

And yet again Amazon can't seem to sell these things outside of the US

Perhaps if they started truly shipping outside of the US then the rest of the world would start caring.

I know plenty of Aussie folk (including me) who would love to be purchasing off Amazon regularly, except its tough to find overseas shippers/relevant products/etc. etc.

Dont think i ever said good. If anything, I said better. Whats up with people on MR and not reading? Really?
