It's going to sell very very well. And dare I say - as great as the iPad mini might be - unless it's also 299 - Apple will have missed the boat.

I just pre-ordered...it's impossible to resist compared to the current iPad prices. I am extremely interested in the $79 Prime yearly membership that not only gets me free 2-day shipping but access to all the movies and tv shows via the Kindle or other Amazon devices/software!

I'm really annoyed that we don't get the Kindle Fire 8.9" version or the Kindle Paperwhite in the UK at launch, which means we'll probably have to wait until sometime next year. Ok I can live without the Fire but I've been waiting for an illuminated Kindle ever since it launched. That really pisses me off Amazon.

We also still don't have the facility to actually buy movies and tv shows to the Kindle, we only get the Lovefilm streaming option. Not much use if I want to download a film to watch on a plane/train without wifi is it.

At least with Apple we get new iPads the same time as they are released in the US. The only complaint I have about the iPad is that I would like the option to store/stream video content from the cloud rather than having to download everything. It's not such a problem for movies but when you want to download a TV series in HD it just takes forever and I don't have the space to store them on my iPad anyway so they just sit on my computer until I want to watch them at home. I'd rather just buy it but not have to download it and stream it from the cloud as and when I want to watch an episode. Other than that I can't see a reason for me to switch and the UK release delays piss me off beyond words.

Ad supported pricing?

I'm not sure I could handle any more ads. Every model will have ads on the lock screen. Not worth it to me.

Kindle Fire: The first non-iPad tablet that's actually decent.

Does airplane mode prevent ads from loading?

Absolutely incorrect. That's not the android model at all. And if you've ever really used ICS or JB, you'd realize how ridiculous your comment is.

Apps are made in Java. That's not efficient.

I don't care anything about the Fire, but the Paperwhite looks intriguing. I'll have to see one in person to see how the experience differs from reading on a backlit screen (which I hate).

Not really.
IMO- the Nook Tablet is very, very nice.
The screen is top notch and it excels at reading, games, streaming media, web, email, etc. It also accepts SD cards for extra storage.
And they just lowered the price well under $200.
It's an overlooked gem.

The iPad is the choice if you need serious work related apps.
Otherwise there are more than decent choices out there for much less.

Conveniently ignoring the Nexus 7 that runs circles around the new Fire HD's.

prove it...there is nothing on the Amazon site that claims what you said (my emphasis in bold)

How did you miss this?

Prove it... ha... pipe down son.

such as? :)

There are probably 20 work-related apps that are even worth $5 on iPad. Most of the apps for iPad are games/toys with a few utilities (that should have been included in iOS from year 1) like file transfer.

iPad may have a million apps, but most of them (even paid versions) are littered with ads or in-store-app-purchase garbage. I own numerous iOS devices and I probably have paid for 15 apps over 3+ years. I would say 10 are kids educational stuff while the other 5 are utilities that should be part of iOS anyway...and of course Angry Birds. :)

I think the Kindle is really going to give Apple hard competition...price, performance, and the fact that who cares if Apple has a million apps when all you'll download are 10-20 in your lifetime. The Kindle Fire, as a web surfing and movie streaming device should rock. The "tablet" space is still in its infancy and although I like the iOS interface, the iPad is quite expensive IMO.

Oh great, someone broke the quote system somewhere... Also, can we get rid of these random COLOR tags all over the place?

I have the kindle touch e-ink with ads, they don't bother me however they don't use any battery when they are on as the e-ink displays them when powered off. My concern would be the ads taking battery life as the color screen is going to be using power to display screen savers.

I wonder if it will work as good as the hype about it.

The LTE plan for $49.95 per year with the extra goodies seems good. I just wonder if there are any other plans, let's say a 1GB and 2 GB plans. 250MB per month doesn't cut for me, and based on my experience with an Android phone, Android devices eat a lot of the Data Plan.

Still, very tempting... I wonder what Apple has coming next week.

Once again the War starts, and this time there's more ammo in play.

no. the display time out is independent of the "special offer".
think of the special offer as a wall paper for the lock screen when you re-active the screen by pressing a button

well, Amazon just decided to sell new one in UK, France now. but I think that it's too late. plus, if they won't sell it out of country unlikely Apple, they can't eat market share they want. the most important thing is that they have to add multi languages on OS. this is an huge mistake. if they will sell it other countries, they shall also allow customers to buy any contents what they want.

by the way, I am not impressed. I'd better choose Google nexus 7 tablet. it's much better. ipad? still not. it's too expensive, and got no stereo and dolby sound system. it means that ipad is a crap as well. aluminum closure doesn't mean high quality. nowadays, people seem to misunderstand. in terms of hardware, Google nexus is the best tablet in the market. retina display? it doesn't really matter since our eyes really can't distinguish more than 1080p.

Jeff Bezos is kind of Boss. I cant say anything but good things about Amazon.

Should be some nice choice with the iPad Mini, Kindle, Nexus 7, and surface and various other nice tablets. Hope the market stays like that, good to have a lot of solid choices out there.

Well, thanks for the reply...and I missed it because it's a simply URL link on the page rather than a big advertisement of the "feature".

Although I agree with most that I hate ads, it's only when the screen is locked and my gut states that Amazon will release a product for $40 more for no ads.

I also really hate to say it, but ads pay big bucks. I work in the software industry and it's ridiculous how much ads pull in and how much a vendor can make with an ad partnership. As much as I hate advertisements on my computing devices and tv, the unfortunate fact is they are lucrative as well as being extremely targeted and extremely easy/cheap to implement.

Ads on the lock screen? Really?

For me that's awesome because i'm an Amazon junkie and they regularly have sweet deals. Putting up ads on the screensaver is a good idea. Also that's why the Kindle HD 32GB model is $249 so this subsidizes the hardware.

Btw this is not a new idea. Remember back in the mid to late 90's with all the free internet services? They too were funded by ads. I love the Amazon ecosystem so upgrading to the Fire HD is a no brainer for me. :)

So you compare a cheap *** ereader with the iPad? Duh.

What is the deal with the big freaking apple and macrumors crap whe pn you reply to a post? What a waste of screen.
