($99 is pretty reasonable to me)..i have 1 tv in the house...
i can stream ios, use airplay, netflix, itunes movies and stream my laptop for everything else...

All that for $99.00? Dude you are getting rip off.......

Let's be honest...

Apple would charge $19 each just for the remote and the HDMI extender cable

Looked great until I read the details and notice you need to plug it into a wall outlet. That is a deal breaker. I have no easily accessible outlet right next to the TV. The outlet for the TV itself is recessed into the wall behind where the TV is mounted. It also kills the portability for the product. Not to mention the unsightly cord (wife hates visible cords) and power adapter brick that adds to the bulk you have to carry around.

Love how none of the photos include the adapter in the shot.

They must have borrowed that from Apple and the iMac:rolleyes:

All the streaming sticks have USB/power adapters and they do not show them in promotional material for obvious reasons.

Interesting to note that it doesn't come with voice control in the remote - that's a decently priced addition. But the core unit for $19 with remote - pretty good if you're a prime member.

Although when Chromecast came out and offered two months of Netflix with it - people were baffled why they would ever want such a device. I think with Roku, the Chromecast and other "sticks" - this type of solution has caught on a bit more.

I already have 2 chromecasts, a roku and 2 apple tvs. Trying to reason out why I would want one even at $19... hmmm

Actually, you need a USB port. Same as with Chromecast. If your TV has a USB port you're set, otherwise you need to plug in the brick and connect the USB there. I do agree that they should've displayed that better in the pictures or made that more clear.

For $19, this is a deal to me. I don't think I'd be inclined to get one as it's currently marketed at $40, though. There's a lot more competition / options around that price-point.

The problem with Chromecast is that it can't do anything on it's own. I need (want) a stand alone device that doesn't require a phone or tablet to control it.

Sounds like you want a Roku or ATV. The Chromecast is definitely a support device. A pretty good at that. I personally love it. I keep one in my computer bag when I'm on the road. It's saved my bacon more than once with presentations and the consumption value is sweet. Plus for $35? It was a no brainer for me. Never regretted it.

enlighten me, whats a better yet cheaper option

i like the seamlessness that the apple tv is giving me.
and i bought this thing 2 years ago and havent experienced a need to 'upgrade'.

Seriously? You're that naive? "A better cheaper option"? People's needs are different than yours. Better is subjective, in no way, shape or form, even from you, is it remotely subjective. Nice try though.

the aTV is TRASH for many people and GREAT for many others. I personally think the aTV is trash and at $99, that makes me LOL.

One of the things keeping me from getting a Fire TV was the lack of HBO Go - read another article that says Amazon is saying the Fire TV will get it in December and the Fire TV Stick will get it around the new year (not sure if that means 1/1/2015, January 2015, or what..... but ideally soon).

Can we please stop calling these things 'Apple TV Competitors'?

At this point ATV is so far behind that it's unfair to the rest of the devices being released.

I guess. I haven't found ANY features on any of these that would compel me to switch from Apple TV. It has a clean interface and streams video reliably from either my iTunes library or whatever channel I pick, and that's 99% of my use right there.

On top of that, it will let me AirPlay from my phone or extend my display from my laptop. I can type directly into search fields from a paired bluetooth keyboard or the on-screen keyboard on my phone.

I'm not out to play video games on a crappy set-top box (have an Xbox) and voice search just sounds like a gimmick.

Seriously, what am I missing by not having a super over-spec'ed Fire TV or whatever?

I will stick with my ATV2 too. With the flawless access to my iCloud photos, iTunes musics, iPhoto library, iMac Airplay, Beamer, Crunchyroll, Giant screensaver with my own iPhoto library, (no Netflix in OZ), there is no reason for me to try either Chromecast or Fire TV.

Ordered two (Prime membership already). I waste more than $40 on stupid stuff and these should actually be useful. I'm hoping they get the iOS app released soon and that it works well. I did not order the extra remote with voice control as I'm hoping the iOS app will have it (if I even use it at all).

One will be used with a second TV. The second I'll test in the living room with our Smart TV and AVR (I can test plugging into the TV vs plugging into the AVR). Right now we can watch Amazon Instant via the Smart TV so it will be interesting to compare the quality/capability between the two. It will be nice to have Plex and compare that to steaming via the AppleTV. One thing I don't like about this is that it's WiFi only, but of course there's no room for an ethernet jack, lol. I always prefer wired connections whenever possible.

i just dont understand the demand for anything else but the apple tv.
aside from the price ($99 is pretty reasonable to me)..i have 1 tv in the house...

And for either a Chromecast or this or a Fire TV you get either a lot more power, or a much lower cost and usually much more utility.

And you wouldn't be tied to how overpriced iTunes is for media.

Apple TV has so much potential. Slap an A8X in it and open it up to the App Store. Apple could design a few controllers, but they are terrible at ergonomics so it would be better if they partnered with a gamer company to do it.

Imagine, the power of all iOS Apps on your TV. It would CRUSH all the other xTV gadgets.

Yet Apple pisses it all away. Why?

Awesome! I have been watching a lot of TV shows on Amazon Prime lately, and have been streaming from my iPhone or iPad. Since I usually use those devices while watching TV, this looks like a great buy. And for $20 it can't be beat.

I really wish Apple would come up with a subscription service similar to Amazon Prime.

Already December 15th delivery. lol.

Sounds like you need a Chromecast. Works with Android (duh), iOS 6 and above - iPhone, iPad, and iPod, and Mac.

chromecast only mirrors what's on chrome right? what if I want to mirror a game I'm playing so my little cousin can watch me play on the big screen? chromecast is definitely not it.

no - you can cast games now too. Anything on the screen can be sent over

Don't think you can do it outside of the Chrome browser without sacrificing lots of performance (super lag on your TV). With aTV it's just one button touch. And since it's native, it's fast too.

Oh and about the streaming directly from your laptop or phone... What do you think those things are? Exactly doing that...

Not sure I follow. What do you mean, "what do you think those things are"? They're devices I own that work really well with Apple TV.

As others have said for $19 this seems like a no brainer to try. It's painful just how much Apple is neglecting the ATV. Pathetic actually. Beautiful iPhone 6 plus and iPad should work in conjunction with the ATV with some type of improved interface over the garbage we have now.
