As others have said for $19 this seems like a no brainer to try. It's painful just how much Apple is neglecting the ATV. Pathetic actually. Beautiful iPhone 6 plus and iPad should work in conjunction with the ATV with some type of improved interface over the garbage we have now.

It's not something that either Apple nor customer will upgrade annually like iPhone as far as hardware is concern. Apple did update the software periodically.

Seriously? You're that naive? "A better cheaper option"? People's needs are different than yours. Better is subjective, in no way, shape or form, even from you, is it remotely subjective. Nice try though.

the aTV is TRASH for many people and GREAT for many others. I personally think the aTV is trash and at $99, that makes me LOL.

whoa man... tone it down. i literally was asking a legitimate question.
your being defensive as opposed to answering the question adds 0 value.
pity, i didnt think youd be the kind to resort to that - i actually really valued your comprehensive ssd guides. thought youd also be as helpful here.

And for either a Chromecast or this or a Fire TV you get either a lot more power, or a much lower cost and usually much more utility.

And you wouldn't be tied to how overpriced iTunes is for media.

what's a lot more 'power' though.
i find i stream stuff really quickly and seamlessly on the single core apple tv.

also i pay $4.99 for a new release movie rental.

i live in canada. is there really a better better option for me to replace my apple tv with something else?

what's the one to get?

chromecast only mirrors what's on chrome right? what if I want to mirror a game I'm playing so my little cousin can watch me play on the big screen? chromecast is definitely not it.

what sam said.

no - you can cast games now too. Anything on the screen can be sent over

My youngest daughter and her friends love to play games on my phone. Unfortunately for me Candy Crush and Angry Birds on the big screen is a big hit. It is good for crowd control though. If one is playing the others are watching and offering suggestions. Too bad kids don't come with noise cancelling technology. Maybe I should get some Bose. :D:D

/ducks

Don't think you can do it outside of the Chrome browser without sacrificing lots of performance (super lag on your TV). With aTV it's just one button touch. And since it's native, it's fast too.

lugging my apple tv to somewhere else and setting it up is a pain.

Rokus are great. I love access to mgo, Amazon, Netflix, hulu, and watching live TV via my tablo.

A smart tv is by far the most compelling current option for me and it's already integrated:

-Streams online sources like Netflix, YouTube, Movie service, etc.
-Plays my videos from USB or streamed from pc or phone
-Plays/streams my music & pics from USB, pc or phone.

It's not the cleanest interface but it handles my requirements exceedingly well. Until we get something like an Apple TV with a full App Store I don't really get the appeal for smart tv users.

Have a smart TV but don't like the interface. But the bigger issue is that the wifi built in isn't very strong.

I guess. I haven't found ANY features on any of these that would compel me to switch from Apple TV. It has a clean interface and streams video reliably from either my iTunes library or whatever channel I pick, and that's 99% of my use right there.

On top of that, it will let me AirPlay from my phone or extend my display from my laptop. I can type directly into search fields from a paired bluetooth keyboard or the on-screen keyboard on my phone.

I'm not out to play video games on a crappy set-top box (have an Xbox) and voice search just sounds like a gimmick.

Seriously, what am I missing by not having a super over-spec'ed Fire TV or whatever?

ATV still doesn't offer access to Amazon right? That's a big miss, in my opinion. Considering the premium Apple charges for ATV, I would expect to be able to rent movies via Amazon.

I wasn't defensive, you're question was lacking logic. While the aTV works great for you, even at $99, it doesn't work for others and at $99, its a joke to them.

Just because you have use for something, doesn't mean others do. Your question made no sense to me, because "a better cheaper" option is subjective and to others, that better cheaper option could be many things that you disagree with.

So your question made no sense to me, thus my response. I wasn't mad or even defensive. You came across oblivious, no offense.

Only you can answer that question that is in bold, do what works for you. Only you truly know your own needs.

and thats why my previous post outlined what i use my apple tv (and any potential set top boxes for).

nevermind..........

I have a smart TV and the built in Wi-Fi is WEAK  and the interface makes me , yes it is THAT bad so I still have and use a Roku 3 and now awaiting for the Amazon Fire Stick.

This is literally your post, verbatim:

enlighten me, whats a better yet cheaper option

i like the seamlessness that the apple tv is giving me.
and i bought this thing 2 years ago and havent experienced a need to 'upgrade'.

You asked a question in your initial post, then you state your need or lack thereof to upgrade, which is fine but I could enlighten you all day with better options, but if you don't 100% agree then its not "a better option" and we are back to square 1, running in circles in never never land with Michael Jackson, and we all know the ending to that experience.

Exactly.

I love(d) my Apple TV2 (jailbroken so I could use plex) - but now it's usually untouched unless I'm burning iTunes credit. I almost exclusively use the Roku. The chromecast is handy for quick relay-play of youtube videos for my daughter..

okay well here ill link it again.

i just dont understand the demand for anything else but the apple tv.
aside from the price ($99 is pretty reasonable to me)..i have 1 tv in the house...
i can stream ios, use airplay, netflix, itunes movies and stream my laptop for everything else...

to which, someone above, said that at $99 im being ripped off. so thats when i replied with your verbatim quote lol

When will Apple get into this game?

They're rarely first to a category but this is a category where the average consumer is highly unlikely going to want to have more than one black box or stick attached to their TV. Why? Because of remotes, management of devices and the fact they have so much core cross over.

Agree, but there is such a low entry cost here I don't think consumers would flinch buying a different one if the feature set was unique and valuable.

That said this is a market Apple needs to refresh soon. We've heard about rumored content license deals, access for devs, etc. I think WWDC is the right time to announce.

Really? You don't understand the "demand" for anything other than the aTV? I cannot take this question seriously, it lacks common sense and logic (no offense). That is like saying "you do not understand the demand for any other car besides a Ford". Again, all subjective.

One religion for all?
One car brand for all?
One person for all to share?
One store for everyone to go to?

I'm honestly not trying to be rude, your post/question makes no logical sense which is why I am confused. When I say it makes no logical sense, it's because your understanding of what the "demand" for a product should be is based solely off of your needs/wants only and because something doesn't fit your needs/want, you see no reason it would have a demand for other consumers?

What don't you understand? That people may want something that you don't want? That people's needs are different than yours?

I don't understand the need for more than one opinion.

i give up lol
nevermind man ill ask for help/suggestion elsewhere

i didnt think I was trying to be nuisance by asking 'i love the apple tv and if theres anything better (for my use)...what is it?'

Google and Amazon are innovating, at least for the products many people want.

appleTV, the non-updated iPad Mini, and the non-upgradeable Mac Mini are true fails for Apple right now.

And I've been an Apple user (and pretty close to a fanboy) since 1986.

Not everyone who wants good products is a high-end user.

If you aren't at least somewhat frustrated by Apple, you're not paying attention.

(PS ordered 2 Fire TV Sticks)

Jeff Bezos is a very smart CEO, smarter than Tim Cook and it's clear, he doesn't take this as just a "hobby."

Normally, I'd say, well big deal, the 1st comers don't always have the best ideas or ability to make it work well out the gate, but Bezos is no Google or Microsoft. With Amazon and media connections, he's on a roll. Hell he even owns The Washington Post now.

Apple better have something insanely great up its sleeve or they might just miss this boat.

I can imagine Steve Jobs rolling over in his grave screaming, WTF are you waiting for Tim Cook?!?! The time is now to pounce! The hobby is OVER!!!!
