I apologize for my comment. I do sympathize, as I am still using exclusively my '01 TiBook G4/667, and want a new PowerBook, but they suck so badly (or well?), that I have been strongly thinking of purchasing a Dell Inspiron XPS Gen 2... All it would take is another 35% off coupon and I would cave... DAMMIT APPLE!!! Keep me from straying, show me what you can do with the PB's! -JB
It's OK. I am just a little bit too easily upset about this subject in particular, because this is my first Windows Laptop ever. I always had PowerBooks before. The problem is that I really like this machine. The only bad thing about it is that it runs Windows XP, but actually I never had a problem so far with the OS and so far I could not collect any arguments against it. It just works and that not too bad. In all other aspects it is a really decent machine and blows any PowerBook out of the water. Except looks maybe. But time is money and my customers don't pay me for how my Laptop looks like...

UK Store closed for maintenance

First post for me, but just wanted to say I was trying to look at my Tiger order status on the UK Store but the site is down for 'scheduled maintenance'. Is this the sign that these new PM's are on their way today (not that there's much of a surprise or rumor on this release!)

Seems like PCland has invaded this realm; no, Doom III and Half-Life are NOT my piece of cake, thanks.

And even my good ol' iBook G3 500 with Panther works well for me, apart from the iMac G5 1.8, bien sûr...

Oh, I see: You were just trying to fool people into thinking Macs were as fast as PCs in all respects?

Wow, that's quite... sinister.

I was pretty impressed by the G5 non-gaming performance (Full disclosure: my main comp is a PC). I don't see why everyone is coming down so hard on Apple for their CPU development cycle - they are pretty much in line with the competition.

What these tests do show is that Apple need to dump more resources into developing OpenGL. (The one game where some attention had been put into making the game Mac-friendly did perform pretty well...)

Pretty lucid post, Gul...3D gaming on the Mac depends on a whole bunch of factors, the least important of them being raw power...Aspyr's Glenda Adams explained those hurdles very well in an interview to InsideMacGames, if I am not mistaken...

It's not only about OpenGL...it's about development priorities to DirectX, size of Mac market, amount of time devoted to game development in PC industry (when compared to much shorter timeframes in Mac ports), Apple's monopoly on some OpenGL resources and so on...it takes much more than "dual-cores" on the Mac, sorry.

And that's why I cannot say current Macs are underpowered, especially when we see their performance against similarly optimized software on the PCs (Bryce, After Effects, Photoshop, Quake 3 etc.).

Nope...just wanted to show, as per your BareFeats "hidden" tests, that G5s spank the hell out of PCs in two tests, and lose a few others to usually more expensive machines; and just wanted to make clear that Macs are not that far off in the market. Once more, I am not including 3D gaming here.

wish they would just stop producing those Powermacs and leave the competition with x86 performance-wise. It's time to realize the "boutique" CPUs can't keep up with a multi-billion $$$ x86 market.

Yeah, right... leave all of us PM-using pros to wither on the vine. Stupidest comment I've read on here for some time.

Sorry my mistake in the wording...the error I got is:

Apple's Online and phone Order Status services are temporarily unavailable due to a scheduled upgrade to our system

ie just the ordering system for is offline

Back to the matter in hand...

10.15am GMT and the UK Apple Refurb Store (which opens 10am each Weds) is displaying "Sorry these products are not available this week."

http://promo.euro.apple.com/promo/refurb/uk/special_page_832.html

This page is usually full of refurb G5 offers at around 20% off RRP.

Shurely confirmation that new spec line-up (and therefore pricing line-up) is to be announced within hours...

Or not.

ETC.

A nice 17" widescreen for the same price as the low end Mac Mini would be nice. What do you think?

I completely agree...I would be the first to have it ordered! Well, that is if they posted them on their webpage at 1:00 P.M. Anything before that is a peaceful night's rest just dreaming about a 500 dollar widescreen 17" LCD with the cute little Apple emblem. =) :)

Actually i'm a bit cut up about that one - even if prices are going to drop today couldn't they put the refurb store up with some OTHER products in it. PM's aren't the only mac you know, and now we've got to wait until next wednesday again.
(soz, a bit off track i know)

apple really lost out on their updates this round. people have been downloading from the unreleased music stores, they've already announced tiger so we are expecting it, the powermacs are out of the bag as well now.
they better shock us with something cool and fancy, its no fun when we already know everything.

ok...

its good to know rumors but not be 100% sure, or even be 100% sure about one thing but still have another product up in the air. sort of like, why watch an apple keynote if you don't have an interest in apple and then again, why watch it if you already know everything that is going to happen?

not so bad

If the low end goes from a single 1.8 to a dual 2.0 it is a great upgrade, and even a dual 2.7 to the high end is not bad, how many DUAL 64 bit P4 3Ghz can you buy from Dell? it has been a slow year for cpu speed, not only for apple

Its gonna be today at 1.30pm!!!!!!!!

I just came off the phone with Apple Business Sales and after a brief chat about scsii cards in pci or pci-x slots - he said he couldn't say much - but that he would call me back at 2.30 to confirm specs - since he had 3 other calls to make after lunchtime. I mentioned the amazon thing, and the whole tone of the conversation says to me - its gonna happen at 1.30pm gmt!!

He also suggested we could talk about possible price reductions also!!

interesting.
