I'm hoping that these new PowerMacs have something to get excited about, but I'm not holding my breath.

Um, cat's out of the bag, my friend. Not sure what you are hoping for, but we are getting 2.0/2.3/2.7 MHz, 2x256MB RAM, Radeon 9600. Outside of the slight speed boost, feel like you have been transported back in time? :(

I dunno. Sounds like that author is on Apple's payroll. :D

its funny how people paid by apple tell the truth.

I knew this was coming, couldn't say anything due to NDA

What's your name? If you truly were under a NDA, you still wouldn't confirm it. If it hasn't been confirmed by Apple, you would not be able to say something like "I knew this was coming."

Really just annoying to see people like this guy on here act like they know/knew something when they really don't. ::: rolls eyes :::

If i install the dual layer burner in a dual 2.5, will the bundled apple DVD software still work?

I've heard not, but wanted to check...

Article on AppleInsider

I just saw a new article on AppleInsider.com that has a very interesting quote at the end from an Apple online store rep in response to Amazon.com "leaking" the news about the new Power Macs...

"Amazon.com shouldn't have done that," an Apple online store representative commented on the Amazon leak. "The Apple Store will be up and running tomorrow morning with the new Power Macs."

There is truth in that - we are never :)

Amazon.com Sales Rank: None
ASIN: B0007OW502
Date first available at Amazon: April 27, 2005

Although the info on the new 2.7 has been removed from the link (along with pic and price), the notation at the bottom probably reveals that Wednesday is the day. I've been holding out for this one, so I'll probably have to buy tomorrow, I'd be happy if the 23" would drop in price - why doesn't anyone rant about how expensive the displays are?

20" widescreen Dell LCD - you cannot beat the value, the screen quality and specs are amazing. (Unless you think it's worth it to spend $700 extra for the metal enclosure......)

Ah, the ugly truth

I am!

There's the kicker right there. The feeling of being compelled to buy a mac, even though you are aggrivated by the level of performance. Lesson learned? People buy them for the OS and the quality components, not the performance/bragging rights.

I dislike the performance level of my ibook, powerbook, and powermac. I truly think they are under powered...but alas....I do own them. And I chose to buy them. I've owned many PCs, but the last 3 computers I bought were macs, and I'll likely never buy another PC. My PC laptops had a life expectancy of 3-6 months, and were worth maybe $75 at that point. Ouch.

I complained and gritted my teeth forever waiting for new powerbooks, and felt personally insulted when they finally rolled out that weak sauce in January. But I would never buy a PC laptop over one of them.

If any of you know anything about foreign built generic four-wheelers, you know that you can get one that looks pretty sweet, has as more horsepower, for 1/3 of the price of a Honda or Yamaha. I would never buy one of the mass produced generics because they are pieces of *****. Hondas will run great forever.

I don't need to draw that parallel out much more than to say I'll always bitch about the price, etc.. of Macs and Hondas, but I'll always buy them, because I can always count on them to run smooth. PCs are a bit faster and cheaper....but they are also pieces of *****.

I can't believe that you put Honda and Yamaha in the same sentence. Honda's might be ok ATV's (if you like 1980's tech), but are not even close to the same level as Yamaha for suspension, performance, reliability, and fit and finish.

Purely out of curiousity, if Apple releases PM updates now and has already shipped Tiger, then what will it be doing at WWDC??
That's a good question. Assuming PMs, iMacs, and eMacs are updated in the next week or so as Thinksecret reported, we're left with:

iBooks (last updated on 10/19/04),
Xserves (01/04/05),
Mac Minis (01/11/05), and
Power Books (01/31/05)

Typically, the WWDC emphasizes software and pro hardware, so I wouldn't expect any iPod announcements, especially since they were all updated recently. That, of course, doesn't rule out some brand new consumer product like a DVR, home media server, or iWalk. My handicap:

-iBooks are the most likely candidate for an update, unless of course they're updated before WWDC.

-Xserve updates are UNLIKELY since Apple likes to introduce new chips in PowerMacs and the Xserves aren't going anywhere unless they get a 970gx in there.

-Mac Minis could see a modest update but they'd be only about 5 months old at point. Instead, a late-summer update is more likely.

-The only way PowerBooks could be updated is if Apple brings out a brand-spanking new chip and architecture. If all Apple has in store is a 100 mhz or so of an upgrade, then I'd expect them to wait a bit longer.

graphic cards

PCI-E 16x graphics cards aren't really any faster than AGP 8x cards-- we want them because all high performance cards from here on out will be based on PCI-E in the PC world.

AGP 8x = 2 GB
PCI-E = 8 GB

You could of fooled me, Frobozz.

I will Friday night

My dual 1gHz Quicksilver gave up the ghost two weeks ago. Waiting for the 10% off sale at the Apple stores Friday night. Using my 500mHz TiBook is getting *very* painful. I'll get the fastest air-cooled PM available. Would love to see at least the 970gx with its larger cache and cooler temp.

Apparantly most of the complaints about the PowerMacs are about RAM. 512MB of RAM does fall real short if you think about buying the pro apps. All apps can run on a G5 with only 512MB of RAM, but Final Cut recommends 2GB, especially for HD video, Soundtrack Pro and DVD Studio recommend 1GB (2GB for HD DVD authoring), Motion recommends 2GB or more!

This specs are a bit high if you think about the measly 256MB that come in the current PowerMacs, probably one of the main reasons to include a minimum of 512 with the upcoming revisions. But still, with all Pro apps recommending at least 1GB of RAM, it still seems as Apple is not playing it right there.

I guess that'll just lead buyers to go to macmall or something where you usually get twice as much as the included ram for "free".

Well, we'll see tomorrow probably....

Who ever said the prices were not changing? They put the 2.7 at $3000! That means the 2.3 must be at $2500 and the 2.0 at $2000! That is a $500 price drop.

To be honest, I would perfer a bigger drop but I think I am ok with that. I am buying one real soon and that extra $500 could mean another gig of ram!

Do you know what a price point is?

Not me. I can wait 2 months for possible new announcements at WWDC before making a decision. My PowerBook G4 will get the Tiger Treatment in the next few days; that'll keep me occupied until WWDC.

PowerMacs are not for computer games!

Food for thought though. Doom 3 and HD, that's what we need dual dual core 3 ghz beasts!

Alright.... I have heard enough. "Where's the dual core? Where's the dual 3.0 GHz?"

Boo hoo.

Macs are not intended for people who want to sit at home and play Quake and download "private" videos. I get this feeling that the people complaining about the lack of upgrades are the same people that would tell you their 180hp Kia is better than a 170hp Lexus. Crunch all the numbers you want, but when it comes down to it there is a reason you are all visiting MacRumors.com..... the reason is simple: Macs are the best you can get with the greatest reliability, software and OS on the market and we are all anxiously awaiting the next generation of G5's.

I will be buying one ASAP after using my G4 for 6 years. How many PC users can say that? (And if you can, how many thousands have you dropped into your Frankenstein PC to try and keep it up to date?"

Macs are the standard for design professionals. I could care less if Doom 3 doesn't run fast enough. If that's what you are looking for, head to the nearest Walmart.

We tend to be perfectionists. Perfectionism does not settle for second best in anything. To be insanely great you have to be just a little insane.
