No,they are not...

 Ok, well I have this moment been to them both and started down the road to buy stuff. Seems to work fine. Usually I cannot get into the store let alone down into individual purchases when its updating...

I think it is because...

...you are using a PC!!! AAAHAHAHAAHAH!!! OK, just kidding, but I just HAD to say it! LOL! I am just kidding though, you might want to try another browser? -JB

I wanted to make one more comment here.

Just because I am angry at Apple about their lack of Hardware output, I do still love the company.

Despite some of the things that have happened to me in the past with them, I really do enjoy using a Mac. When I am on a PC (which I am quite comfortable with) I notice little things I wish they could do that make me love my Mac more and more.

BUT... this doesn't excuse Apple for being pathetic on its hardware updates. Realistically I think we all agree that IBM is at true fault, but what company went with IBM for the processors. What company decides all the other components of the computer? Apple does, and the fact that they cheap out, upgrade after upgrade, when it comes to nice new components is ridiculous.

The reason their laptops are so good is because they are loaded to the teeth with extra features. Bluetooth and airport built in, large hard drives, thin enclosures, shock protection, nice DVD burning, lighted keyboard, slot loading drives, optical audio, and nice video cards.

Do you understand that all of these things make up for the lack of a g5. Using a powerbook is a dream because you never have to plug anything but power into it. Everything is there for you and everything works well. The "little" things make the laptop the best on the market (so I say).

It's just too bad the G5 doesn't follow this same pattern. We are stuck with slow AGP 8x, slow 400mhz RAM, non built in Airport and Bluetooth, only 2 hard drive slots, slow standard graphics cards, and VERY slow processor speed (in comparison to previous updates).

Is the g5 fast, yes. Is it a damn nice computer, yes. Would I rather use it than any PC, yes. Does that excuse Apple for its lack of updates to make the computer top of the line... absolutely not.

I agree almost entirely

First of all, 400MHz RAM is not slow, as you can see by AMD's usage of it as well. I think we can all agree here that Apple should go AMD's route and choose to skip right over DDR2, and go right to DDR3 or DDR500. Apple's systems seem more a match with DDR1 than DDR2, just like AMD. I DO agree with everything else though (except PowerBooks aren't "Power" anymore). -JB

The tracking of the Apple Store is down at the moment due to a system update. They are on their way...
The tracking has been taken down a few times in the last few weeks. "Apple's Online and phone Order Status services are temporarily unavailable due to a scheduled upgrade to our systems." may mean exactly that this time around.

Thanks.

20" widescreen Dell LCD - you cannot beat the value, the screen quality and specs are amazing. (Unless you think it's worth it to spend $700 extra for the metal enclosure......)

I would spend 70$ for the nice little metal enclosure. But you're right, 1000 for a 20 inch really pisses me off. Apple needs to offer something for the consumer, not just the pro users. So with that said, could you supply a link for that nice dell display to accompany my new PowerMac tomorrow. =) THANKS>!

Apple needs to update their iBooks and Powerbooks. They're the most (only?) interesting Macs anyway.

I wish they would just stop producing those Powermacs and leave the competition with x86 performance-wise. It's time to realize the "boutique" CPUs can't keep up with a multi-billion $$$ x86 market.

Sell Apples as what they are: Stylish, easy-to-use machines best suited for things you do everyday: Email, Internet, Office work
Essentially, sell Apple computers like they sell Apple Ipods.
Ipods aren't necessarily the best mp3-Players, but they still get sold because they're cool.
Same goes for Macs, only Apple hasn't realized it yet and tries to keep up with x86 when there's really no need to do so.

I just wish the harcore Apple fanboys would stop being so delusional.
"Intel isn't faster and P4s suck!"

...Yeah, right. It's not like I can tell you're desperate or anything.

Edit: And if the Powermacs don't get PCIe soon, there won't even be any graphics cards for the Powermacs anymore! Good luck with that, Apple!

I think what you mean is you would much rather use Mac OS X than Windows, regardless of processor speed. That goes without saying. But the truth still remains that x86 hardware is simply way ahead of what the Mac has to offer. When the G5 was released, everything it included to really make it fast existed already for intel and AMD computers--except for the G5 processor itself obviously.

It is not very likely at all that Apple/IBM will ever get ahead of the curve, but it doesn't really matter. You all [should] know what you're paying for when you buy a Mac. It isn't "cutting edge" hardware. You buy a Mac for the software and how seamlessly it works with the hardware. If you were buying your computer because it was the ultimate in hardware, you're wasting your money.. should have gone with a nice AMD64 machine.

Newbie war!! Hehe. Good to see more noobs joining in the discussions, although a lot of the stuff are repeats. Like the whole 3Ghz promise, that was beaten to death 10 months ago.

Perhaps YOU should stop the nonsense, since TWO of the tests are EASILY won by the G5s, TWO (almost a draw) by the more expensive Opteron, and TWO by the monstrous Dual Xeon...

Please be less biased next time, so that people can get a full picture of the issue.

Yeah, and then you look at page 2 (which you obviously haven't done) and see how Apple gets spanked. Badly.

Yes, I have seen it several weeks ago, but you may explain to our spectators what Page 2 is all about...you mean *cough* 3D games *cough*...right?

And to the "veterans" here, "newbie" means new to the forum, not new to the Mac...

Newbie, eh?

Just because I haven't posted a lot doesn't mean I am a newbie... Even though I registered in 2003, it was the second time I did, the first was quite awhile before that, I just forgot my login stuff after switching providers and emails and such. Same goes for other boards I have joined. I have been a genuine Mac Addict and all around techie since I was 4 years old and played with our Apple IIe, which granted was only 1987, it has been that way my whole life. I read over 20 tech sites (Mac, PC, and general) every chance I can (which is usually daily), and hardly consider myself a "newbie". LOL! Wow, I am tired... I should really go to bed for school tomorr... er, today. -JB

Exactly. 3DGames. What else would a lawyer need a fast computer for?

Seems like PCland has invaded this realm; no, Doom III and Half-Life are NOT my piece of cake, thanks.

And even my good ol' iBook G3 500 with Panther works well for me, apart from the iMac G5 1.8, bien sûr...

A nice 17" widescreen for the same price as the low end Mac Mini would be nice. What do you think?

Maybe I am using a Windows Laptop when I am not in my Office because I have to due to the ****** performance of the current PowerBooks? I don't find that funny at all...

Ironic...

Well, isn't THAT ironic... I just noticed I went from "newbie" to "member" in the last couple posts... LOL! Reminds me of a Family Guy part: "Hey, remember the other day when you asked me what the definition of irony was and I said- MMMMMRRPH!!" LOL! Love that show... IT IS COMING BACK MAY 1ST!!! -JB

Hey I am in almost the same boat

I apologize for my comment. I do sympathize, as I am still using exclusively my '01 TiBook G4/667, and want a new PowerBook, but they suck so badly (or well?), that I have been strongly thinking of purchasing a Dell Inspiron XPS Gen 2... All it would take is another 35% off coupon and I would cave... DAMMIT APPLE!!! Keep me from straying, show me what you can do with the PB's! -JB

I was pretty impressed by the G5 non-gaming performance (Full disclosure: my main comp is a PC). I don't see why everyone is coming down so hard on Apple for their CPU development cycle - they are pretty much in line with the competition.

What these tests do show is that Apple need to dump more resources into developing OpenGL. (The one game where some attention had been put into making the game Mac-friendly did perform pretty well...)
