I just came off the phone with Apple Business Sales and after a brief chat about scsii cards in pci or pci-x slots - he said he couldn't say much - but that he would call me back at 2.30 to confirm specs - since he had 3 other calls to make after lunchtime. I mentioned the amazon thing, and the whole tone of the conversation says to me - its gonna happen at 1.30pm gmt!!

He also suggested we could talk about possible price reductions also!!

interesting.

Ok 10.30pm Sydney time... 90 mins...we shall see

While we are waiting, I highly reccomend bringing the powerbook to the couch and enjoy some Nick at nite, Fresh Prince and Full House.

No apple product can beat that.

10.15am GMT and the UK Apple Refurb Store (which opens 10am each Weds) is displaying "Sorry these products are not available this week."

http://promo.euro.apple.com/promo/refurb/uk/special_page_832.html

This page is usually full of refurb G5 offers at around 20% off RRP.

Shurely confirmation that new spec line-up (and therefore pricing line-up) is to be announced within hours...

Or not.

ETC.
Actually, i find THIS a bit annoying, i.e. that the UK refurb store is only open on Wednesdays after 10 AM, for a limited time. I'll bet the US refurb store is open rather longer hours than this!

Yep 24/7. AND it's got heaps more stock than the UK one. :(

The SGI people lived, the Sun people lived, you'll live.

SGI still make workstations with custom MIPS processors. Only their linux products use Pentium chips. This would be like apple selling Power PC based computers for OS X users and general x86 based machines for linux/unix consumers.
The story is the same with Sun. They still sell high end SPARC systems, only the Java based machines and servers use AMD chips. Sun made the move because they couldn't sell products, the apple market share is greater and their consumers go to them because they can't get what they get from the fruit anywhere else. By creating the superb software they create a niche this protects them from having to compete blow for blow in the eyes of the pro user.
The vast majority of the people who complain about the mac performance are not the ones who earn a living from using them.

If the low end goes from a single 1.8 to a dual 2.0 it is a great upgrade, and even a dual 2.7 to the high end is not bad, how many DUAL 64 bit P4 3Ghz can you buy from Dell? it has been a slow year for cpu speed, not only for apple
Javier

Quite a few actually, Xeon of course instead of P4. I have one, Precision 470 I bought in November or so for like $1200. I was just browsing the outlet store yesterday and saw another one, dual 3ghz xeon with the 64bit extensions, 2gig of DDR2 ram, 146gig 10k rpm scsi drive, gigabit ethernet, lots of firewire and usb2 ports, 5.1 sound, crappy PCI-express video, and just a dvd-rom drive, but only $1020! Throw a 6600gt in there for $170 and a dual layer DVD burner for $50 and you've got an amazing workstation dirt cheap, almost bought it for the wife. Now granted that's a refurb, but it still has a 3 year warranty! Dell sells lots of dual 3ghz 64bit machines and you can get them wicked cheap if you spend a little time looking.

You're right that it's been a hard year for ramping up CPU speed, but everyone else's prices have also dropped which is why you can find on the PC side a dual processor machine that's 83% of the top end speed for 1k. I think that is what a lot of the folks are upset about with Apple's latest offering.

I am also waiting for a good update to replace the dual 800 PM I'm using now, 2.7 for 3k is not a good update for me. If the dual 2ghz had come in even in the $1500 range that would have been a reasonable update price wise, but it didn't. On the Mac side if I want 80% of the top end speed, (which still isn't as fast as my $1200 PC for the things I do) I've got to spend $2.5k, it's too much. Now if at WWDC they announce a dual core duals at the same price points as they have now, I'll look again.

Yeah, but you gotta remember, the price of the single 1.8 is $1499 US while it is gonna be $1999 for the dual 2.0. Plus the low end machine (the dual 2.0) usually has only 4 RAM slots instead of 8, and slower PCI slots, so the dual 2.0 is going to be "downgraded" for the $500 drop in price from the currently shipping model. (or shall I say "previously" shipping model, depending on when you read this.)
;)

Pulled an all-night myself.

No school however, and work is not an issue as I work at a nightclub.

Here is hoping to lower prices and newer models all around :)
