Does one really need the family pack if you have say 3 macs?

Edu price is usually $69 for single version, the price is no different for family pack, $199.

Not that I don't think its worth it, man $69 is CHEAP for an OS!!

(And yes I qualify for edu pricing thx to the wife)

i tried that once. PROBLEM! if they are online at the same location they won't work. you could do it if they were stand alone machines without talking to each other.
THE BIG FREEZE!

The only benefit to pre-ordering is you might get your copy a day or two before everyone else does. I got Tiger a day or so before it came out, so, that was slightly cool.

A day or so huh? Call me crazy, but it's never been that important to me. If I have it within a week or a month after release I'm happy.

Forgive me as I've forgotten. But will Leopard be released on the same day in Europe along with America n co? If so I'd probably just buy it instore myself, and get an extra Apple carrier bag.

51. yeah sure.

It has so far been pre-ordered less than "Better Homes and Gardens Home Designer Suite 7.0".

Sure. big effing deal...

So...

How's that crow tasting there Whistleway?

It's #2 less than 6 hours after your post.

I'd say that's a "big effing deal" for software that won't even be available for 5 months.

I preordered Harry Potter from Amazon back in December because I didn't want some chump to spoil it. "Yeah, I can't believe that death eater totally murdered Ron in chapter six... You know, when Hermione was under the imperious curse and lured him there... That's why she missed that Dark Arts class where the Malfoy steals the invisibility cloak. Oh, you haven't read it? You really should!"

But for Leopard, I *do* want the spoilers. I want to be able to go on the forums and read about the features and changes before I actually buy, and if there are any problems, wait for Apple to fix those. I think +2 months after release date is the right time to purchase Leopard. With a new Mac of course. :)

With this being my first OS upgrade as a new Apple user, I'm not sure how this works. When can we expect Apple to have Leopard available for pre-order?

Between the educational discount I'm still eligible for (after graduating college 2+ years ago!) and getting the software a couple days early, I'm all for a pre-order from Apple.

Firstly, its ranking is up to #2 now.

Secondly it is VAPORWARE!

:)

Rocketman

Technically not VAPORWARE since it is in Beta. VAPORWARE is a term I reserve for "product" that certain large corporations would announce (this especially occurred a lot in the 80's) that never existed, was often never really planned to exist, but had the effect of driving small innovative companies out of the space because no one thought they could compete with the big sharks.

But your point is taken. We're 4 months out from a released product - and it's second in sales? That's nuts!

Or you could do your bit to help stabilise the initial release sooner by installing it on a separate partition, testing it with the apps that you want to use and contributing to the discussion and bug reports to Apple - assuming it is has major issues that is. :p

Of course no .0 public release is prefect, but I'm hoping that since apple has taken more time with this release then the issues will be fewer out of the gate.

I'll be pre-ordering in the UK as soon as there is an option to do so :D

Wow. There were three different moments there where I thought I understood you.

What the heck are you even talking about?

Option (a) Posted into the wrong tread my mistake
Option (b) Thought that the OP he was quoting was suggesting only buying 1 $69 license instead of a family pack for use on multiple Macs and thought that there might be a lock-out if they were used on the same network.
Option (c) Your guess is as good as any other because it makes not much sense at all!
Option (d) Who cares?

Just placed an order at Amazon-interesting that the estimated ship date is August 13...?!

I saw a completely nonsensical response to this, but if all you have is 3 macs, and the edu price is really $69, then it looks like a wash to me. The math is pretty simple:

Price for three macs is: $69 * 3 = 198
Price for family pack is: $199

You just saved yourself a dollar. And a dollar saved is a dollar earned. I really can't believe the edu price is so low - seems odd.

Ugh - pointed out I am a moron and cannot multiply in my head: $207 vs $199. Still a wash.

Apple will most likely strictly enforce the "Do not ship until official release," so I wouldn't plan on getting it earlier through Amazon. And, for those who've never ordered from Amazon before, a little "heads up" is in order, specifically:

"Free shipping" means a UPS delivery in two to three weeks. In other words: Don't look for it to be on your porch tomorrow. If you want it sooner, be prepared to pay for shipping.

It's most likely that Apple will sell it through its online store, and, if so, there'll be free FedEx shipping included.

My guess? Regardless of how early you buy it, a "patch" (OS X 3.5.000001) will probably be available via the Auto Updater the minute you install it.

:D

Obviously you don't qualify for an education discount. Three times $69 is $207, not $198.

:)

$199 is a fantastic deal for a family pack. Trying to use one copy for multiple systems is just silly considering that you get your money's worth even if it's just 2 machines.

It's a wash if it's 3 computers and that discount price, but the license to install it on MORE than just those 3 computers is what you're also paying for.

Edit: Boy, I didn't even pay attention to the math.

Should've got out the calculator. :) Too funny.

Can I qualify for the lawyer's discount instead by pointing out that the agreement for the edu discount typically indicates that you can only buy 2 of any title during a given academic year?

So the new equation is $69 * 2 + $129. Reaching for calculator... $267.

Suddenly $199 doesn't look so bad.
