This is great news! Now really all that's left for the Apple TV app is for Netflix to work. Then all the major streaming services will be available.

So I have Prime, what's GOOD on the App? I have never used it because when I've browsed it it seemed like they had the same movies Netflix and such offer.

You would think, and that's a pretty clear error. I hope it's not either, seems less likely with that other post using very specific language about the 3rd gen. Since I have access to 3rd gen right here at the home office, I'll keep checking on it :)

Hey, looks like we have our answer!

What a total and complete waste of time! The App doesn't support anything but Stereo sound. Why would anyone watch a program that is coded in 5.1 as stereo? The Amazon App on my TV plays all audio correctly.

With only stereo support this app is useless to me.

I'm hoping that it is just a bonehead coding error that will be fixed in the next few days as they receive the disappointing feedback. But, it could also take yet another year!

Great news, mostly for Amazon. PrimeTV was invisible to me not being in the Apple ecosystem. I forgot it existed.

Over the holidays, we were looking for a show which was only available on Prime, we couldn’t find it even after googling on the web. (A friend later told us Amazon had exclusive license.)

Now that’s its on Apple TV and connected to Siri search, it’ll be interesting to see if there is value. But the first problem is discoverability is solved.

Let's all bombard Amazon with feedback and suggestions, and make the developers work hard for their Christmas bonus.

Yes! There wasn't a system update, but it did require a restart (or it just happen to push out during that restart). At any rate, that's awesome news, it means this 3rd Gen has some extra life in it (even as a freebie to a family member or friend). Sitting right next to Netflix in perfect harmony :D

Wondering if the servers are overloaded or something.

When I launch the Prime Video app, I see the launch screen logo, then a message about an internet connectivity problem.

I’m able to stream Netflix, Hulu, and my iTunes library without issue, so I’m chalking it up to something on Amazon’s side.

Day One issues I’m assuming....

somewhat related, but I have been using the TV app and find it the best for discovering content simply because it can pull from all of your services (HBO, Netflix, Showtime, Amazon, etc). I never really like having to search multiple services, so try the TV app and see if you find better content that way.

It means I can now use Apple TV for pretty much everything, with the only notable exceptions being BT Sport (which would be useless for me anyway if it was tied to having BT Internet service, like the iOS app is), and Channel 4. Between Amazon, NowTV, Netflix, BBC, ITV and Channel 5 (and iTunes), 99% of what I watch is now covered. Amazon was the big missing piece in the jigsaw.

I don't think UKTV Play is yet available on tvOS?

I believe that BT Sport is available to EE post-pay customers for £5 p/m (though some tariffs include it for free for a set period of time, the duration of the contract, or until the tariff is changed). Chromecast and AirPlay functionality seems to be disabled but the Windows 10 app can be used instead, although without the fancy timeline feature. However, there is not an Xbox One / S / X app.

Live in California, US. I had to download it from the App Store at 5 AM.

It is a handicapped version of the service.

You can’t purchase movies via the app. Not a big deal. You still can on the web page and they show in the Video Library section. It’s just an extra, unnecessary step to use those accumulated $1 video credits gained for opting for slow shipping.

But you cannot rent movies, or even view movies rented on a different device all from what I see.

This is ONLY for the Prime-bannered videos.

But they do support 4K/UltraHD.

I love that it's only for the prime content, as I no longer have to worry about what's free prime content and what is premium content. I can now put the app on the apple tv I leave at my folks house and not worry about them accidentally purchasing premium content unknowingly, the reason I hadn't given them a fire tv. If Amazon would just let you disable purchases through the settings on the device it would have been fine, but they had no incentive to do that; now that they have to give Apple a cut of the revenue, they've given me exactly what I wanted.

As for the rentals, the app settings has a rentals section that says you can watch any rental purchased on amazon.com through the app - haven't tried it myself, but that's what it says.

It's been six months since Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that Amazon Prime Video would be coming to Apple TV later this year, and now that app is officially beginning to roll out to tvOS devices in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and several other regions across Europe.

Similar to other versions of Amazon Prime Video, the Apple TV app allows Prime subscribers to sign into their accounts and watch Amazon Prime exclusive TV series, as well as browse a collection of movies. Users can add shows and movies to a watchlist, sync their watchlist across devices, and use Apple TV's Siri Remote to search for Amazon content from inside the app.

The updated Amazon Prime Video iOS app now supports Universal Search, allowing users to look up Prime videos using the native search function on their devices. Version 5.0 of the iOS app also supports iPhone X displays. While the tvOS app is a separate component of the installation, Amazon Prime Video is said to be available on pre-app store third-generation Apple TVs as well as fourth-gen and 4K Apple TVs, according to the release notes. (We're waiting for clarification on generational support.)

Prior to its official launch, there were numerous release date rumors surrounding the Amazon Prime Video tvOS app. The first pointed to its launch on the day of the iPhone X keynote event, and then a separate report from Recode countered that rumor with sources that claimed the app would not be ready at that time. Later in September, the next rumor predicted its launch alongside Thursday Night Football, and when that date came and went the most recent rumor -- sourced from a Redditor claiming to work for Amazon -- predicted an October 26 debut.

Yesterday, a redditor opened up the App Store and saw an Amazon Prime Video story as the top feature in the "Today" section, after he had manually turned his device's clock forward by a day. He linked the section on reddit, which other users were able to see temporarily before the content was pulled by Apple. The "Today" App Store description in question specifically referenced Amazon Prime Video for Apple TV, which was finally launched today.

Amazon Prime Video was one of the last remaining streaming service holdouts to release a tvOS app, so users will now be able to rely on the 4th and 5th generation Apple TV devices a little more without having to use a PlayStation 4, Fire TV, or Roku to jump to Amazon's video catalog. In terms of other Apple products with Amazon Prime Video apps, users can also watch Prime shows on iPhone and iPad with the company's iOS app [Direct Link], which also supports downloading select videos to view offline.

Tim Hardwick contributed to this article.

Update: MacRumors has been able to confirm that Amazon Prime Video also supports Apple's TV app.

How is this app optimized for iPhone X.

Has the black bars on top and bottom.

It looks like iPhone 8.
