The iPad screen brightness is almost as low as it will go

Anyone with an iPad, see how far down you have to turn the screen brightness in iBooks to get the page as dark as his - even in bright sunlight.

In fact, even without reflections, having the screen that dim is damn hard to read, except in the dark.

Dead on!

Surf the web, Have a book read to you. Listen to music. Read PDF files. Email word documents, PDF and picture files :)

Just came back from 7 days of sun in Cabo and must admit I had to struggle to try to view my Ipad screen poolside. Whether doing work or just screwing around it was difficult to see...and forget trying to do it with sun glasses on.

I give them credit for the direct hit in this ad!

Still love the Ipad.

But can the Kindle work as a mirror in direct sunlight? Noooooo it can't so eat that Amazon

Indeed. What the ad doesn't show you is how the guy gives up reading his book and just tilts his reflective iPad to ogle the girl without anyone noticing.

Probably not, since the kindles functionality is only a subset of the iPads. However, I know plenty of people that have a Kindle in addition to iPad. They use the Kindle for eBooks, the iPad for all the rest.

The kindle is fantastic for the (limited) use is was made for. Why not use the best device for every purpose. iPad and Kindle can coexist - its not about who is better since they are too different.

I guess this ad is to point this out, that iPad users can/should get a Kindle for eBook reading.

Yes! Two great devices that are a joy to use. Actually, I read a lot on both devices. But, for outside, the Kindle is king. That said, I take my iPad many more places than I take my Kindle.

Come on people, get outside and enjoy the best graphics money can buy!

As MacDawg pointed out: It is not healthy for you to stay in direct sunlight - you will get cancer from that. Be smart and look for a shady spot - on the plus side, besides not getting cancer, you will be able to read books, browse the web, watch movies, play games, ... etc on some magical device.

Perhaps you could use a little sun... or at the very least leave your abode from time to time.

So are we going to see iPad vs Kindle ads, Mac vs PC style?

Because those would be amusing.

nope. because in one ad Kindle shot their only clear point. and its the thing all my kindle friends say. So I ask them when was the last time they actually sat outside in the direct sun reading... and ..um.. why?
and then, when was the last time they lay in bed at night with the lights out, and read on their kindle?
No? Oh, I read in bed a LOT more than I ever think of reading outside. The one time I actually was outside, I had a users manual (pdf) for a new radio in my car that i was programming... with pics.. how does that look on your kindle? well..um.. they dont know how to get pdf files on it. but they know they can.

yeah, an ad series will be real short. one trick pony... sunlight reading.

shrugs

The Kindle is priced right for what it does. It is also nice that once you buy amazon books, you can download them wherever, whenever. I have both and use them for different things ... and don't even get me started on the weight difference if you want to read one handed.

By "fools" do you mean people who try to read small text on glossy screens outdoors, or folks who spend hundreds of dollars on sunglasses?
I couldn't care less about anything. I mean some people simply need glasses, or they won't see a thing. Making fashionable sunglasses for them even more expensive – eye surgery isn't an option for everyone, neither is lasik.com

I still consider myself to be very lucky, because I don't need glasses – even on my age, after 25 years of using computers – but that might change anytime soon.

Speaking about being lucky: We happen to own a house on Ibiza, with a nice large pool, so we don't visit hotels much anymore.

All the way up. Seriously, LCDs don't work well in direct sunlight, this isn't some kind of trickery. My Macbook needs to be pegged at full brightness in sun light for me to be able to read it while in the shade.

Too little too late, and half-hearted at best. But the next time I'm in a situation where I'm reading in direct sunlight, I'll remember the Kindle fondly. Not sure, though, if I'm up for buying a device that'll be useful for about an hour on maybe two occasions.

Dont read much then? It is as useful as you want it to be.

I could buy enough secondhand books for less than that price to last me the rest of my life.

That's a nice little shot at Apple. They are pretty flippin' bad for reading outside.

But, it's pretty much all they've got going for them feature for feature.

"$139" - that gets you no apps, no extra functionality, no nothing.

You know, in this age of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and many other options for the increasing number of people with short attention spans, there are still some people who really just want to read.

Cute try, think it'll change how fast iPads are selling? Nope.

They're not trying to decrease iPad sales. They're trying increase Kindle sales. Seems to me that the commercial is aimed at people who already own iPads and have tried to read them in the sun.
