Wow, emotionally scarring!
Negan is incredible

Dinner has been served, pizza and Bisqick!

They belittled Abe's Lucille death by making Glenn's more gruesomely eyepopping (see what I did there).

But how did the Axe get on top of the RV?! I could have sworn Negan pitched it forward.

And how did that light show and commotion not attract a hoard bigger than the one they successfully drove into that canyon?! Oh wait, don't forget that one stray zombie that comes slithering out of the woods at the end. o_O

I must say though, I was thoroughly pleased. AMC you may have just redeemed yourself after last season's cliffhangers in the mid season and season's end.

Agreed!!

I must say, watching Talking Dead after the season premiere really was incredible. I can't recall any television show that has had this kind of impact on its fans and its cast. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the show, but to me it's merely entertainment. The way some people are reacting and the way it is being handled is both fascinating and remarkable.

Just wait until the Gilmore are back ;)

I am glad that they didn't do this to us at the end of last season. That would have been much worse than what they did here.

They fixed some of the problems with the comic version from issue 100.

1) No one fought back at the time.
2) Negan left too quickly after "the deed"
3) The group was divided with Maggie immediately blaming and taking it out on Rick

They honored the source material by making it visually and verbally identical in key points and also honored all of the TV version's characters by giving each of them fitting roles to play in this episode. Abraham the tough guy, Glenn the husband, Daryl the hothead protector, Carl the cool and collected, Rick the broken badass and Maggie the leader.

Rick needs to enter the next phase of the story without his closest lieutenants around him. No Abraham, Glenn, Daryl, Carol or Maggie directly beside him. They set that up that well.

Time for new alliances.

It will be interesting to see if Michonne follows her arc or Andrea's now that we have "Richonne"

Thought the episode was outstanding. I too liked they way they played out the deaths and then the little road trip Negan and Rick took. He took it that much further and we get to really see what type of person we are going to be dealing with.

Right after Daryl had his little outburst at Negan, I called it and said Glenn is done. The position of Negan, the look on Glenn's face. That scene with Glenn was spot on. Just as impact full too! I am so glad they, the TWD team, did not wuss out and paid tribute to the source material and were very brutal about it. I had the wife read issue 98-100 prior to the show and the first thing out of her mouth when we see Glenn after the first hit, holy smokes that is right out of the books!!

The scene with Carl and his arm was probably some of the most intense TV I have seen in a very very very long time. That was the crescendo for us. Both me and wife were on edge during that whole interaction. To actually see Rick break. WOW.

I didn't see the big guy getting it though. That was a shocker. His last line was classic Abraham. He is the one character I am going to really miss.

I am wondering what is in store for Daryl at this point? Will he take on the role of Carl and be Negan's little experiment?!?!

Excellent episode!

I'm also concerned about Darryl. Perhaps I read too much into what Negan said, but I don't want to have to sit through a season of Darryl being raped and abused.

The game has fundamentally changed, it's clear that our friends are now in the weakest position ever. They are the victims of the strongest group in the land. The repercussions will be huge...

What was with the axe being both on top of the RV and off in the weeds at the same time?

Rick is also Magneto.

To actually see Rick break. WOW.

THIS is the part that stands out. We have been seeing a sort of superhero Rick for six long seasons. beating zombies, killing his own friend, seeing his kid losing an eye, and even dealing with his wife's death. He never really broke. He cried, but he never broke; you could always see in his eyes that he saw a glimpse of hope.
Yesterday? Gosh, it was torture. Slow torture, until he hit THE breaking point (and until our heart rate reached 248bpm). In one episode, he became human. Worse, he became a weak human, a slave of an evil master.
wow.

Don't you know, in the comic, Rick becomes Negan's Reak.*
*GoT reference. :p
GoT a feeling George Martin wrote that episode for them :p

I still can't shake the image of Glenn being struck and then being continuously struck until he was nothing but a bloody pulp.

Happened to both of them, but Glenn's had a little more blood splattering up. It is pretty brutal.

Did you notice when Negan walked away after batting practice with Glenn, there was flesh dangling off of the tip of Lucille? Talk about a tender moment o_O

I did not get that either, unless he was supposed to have grabbed it sight unseen and taken it up on top with him.

I'm pretty num to any abuse heaped on a zombie ;) and fairly num to even people being eaten by zombies, but it's the people doing cruel things to one another is what still gets me. It's not enough to put a bullet in someone's head, Negan had to impress Rick's group with what a psycho he was to earn their respect and loathing. Candidate A for shoot-on-sight, summary execution in the post apocalyptic world.

That was probably the best episode of television I have ever seen. I thought Glenn was the one that got hit with Lucille, just because they kind of prepared us last season with the whole dumpster scene and we thought he was dead.

.

Negan threw the axe on the top of the RV. When Rick jumped to the hanging zombie, he was swinging and he dropped it into the weeds.

It seemed like he just tossed it out. Not disputing what you are saying though.
I just watched it again. Megan clearly tossed it to the roof of the RV I didn't notice it the first time I watched, but it was clear also given the noise it made when landing.

In one episode, he became human. Worse, he became a weak human, a slave of an evil master.

I really wouldn't characterize Negan as "evil". At least not the graphic novel version.

He may seem that way at first, but he just lives by a different set of rules. Much like Rick and gang.

Greedy, yes. Violent, sometimes. Foul mouthed and politically incorrect, check.

Evil, not so much.

If I had to pick a D&D alignment for him it would probably be lawful neutral.

I think the comic book version of the Governor was much closer to being evil, and his watered down TV version approached that when he took out his entire following.

I have to disagree. Nagan is clearly evil (profoundly immoral and malevolent). His morality is give to me, bow to me, my way or the highway, or I'll hideously murder you or your loved one and mangle their remains just cause I have the power to do so. You are just cattle to me.

I believe it was originally tossed on top by Negan and then it flew off to the side as Rick was jumping off the RV's roof.

I'd probably need to rewatch it, but the way he threw it out made it look like other was possible--tossing it up on top or just at a high arch into the air to the side.
