Two thoughts generally gripped me during last night's episode.
First thought, Darryl is flat out stuck. There's really no out for him at this point. His group has joined Negan's ecosystem. This means that even if he were to find a way to escape that he can't return to Alexandria. So, if escape continues to be an option then his only choice is to leave his former life and friends behind. I can only see two other options available to him. Join Negan or try and kill Negan. These options both seem to likely involve bending to Negan's will, either genuinely for self preservation which is the route Dwight has chosen, or doing so in guile for the purpose of finding an opportunity to take Negan out. However, Darryl seems intent on not "kneeling" to the Negan crown at this point which really keeps things in neutral for the moment. We've seen him "blend in" with that one group in the past as a survival strategy, but Negan is pretty intent on forcing him to make a decision and that choice carries with it immediate consequences.
Second thought, I'm not sure how Negan has survived this long? I get that he's a true villain and that he rules as a dictator by fear and intimidation. That being said, he espouses a worldview of "take what you want" in life and that is going to get him a knife in back from one of his loyal disciples who want to usurp his throne. I think of all the rulers throughout history who were ultimately undone by their own philosophy as it came home to roost. What's that old saying about absolute power? It's intriguing to me that he hasn't had an "et tu Brute" moment yet. Additionally, when you use cruelty to the degree that he has you also run the risk of breaking someone to the point of vengeance or sacrificial justice. I think of the Emperor, Vader, Luke triangle in Star Wars. The Emperor's never ending cruelty and evil will brought Vader to the point that he could no longer take it and had to end the madness. Negan is also primed for this sort of undoing whether it be at the hands of Dwight or another individual that he has pushed too far. Just taking all of this in, it makes me wonder how one of these two things hasn't happened yet. I'm sure we're going to get to watch it happen as that is likely what this story arc is all about.
