I don't think Phil is that bad, the judges hate him tho. I think a lot of the singers are over rated and none really deserve to win. I also think the judges are told not to say anything bad about Sanjaya, they stopped criticizing and I think the producers want him there.

Sure. Sanjaya is on his way to becoming infamous.

After Gina's elimination, I think I'm just about ready to give up on the show. Not that I thought she was going to win it all, mind you -- but she was obviously better than several of the remaining contestants (and we all know who I mean).

I do agree with MacNut, who said:

I don't get why the judges are so upset, after all they did pick these people. Maybe if they picked talented singers then we would have a good show.
To be fair, there are four or five folks left who should legitimately be there -- and you all know who I mean -- but there are also some turkeys who should never have made it past "Hollywood Week".

yeah, i think the show is fixed.....
I don't think it's "fixed" in the sense of an inside job, where FOX is, say, inflating the vote count for Sanjaya or Haley. I believe that Sanjaya really is getting that many votes coming in on the phone lines. But it's clear that there's a coordinated campaign (possible more than one) to keep him in it, with the intent of spoofing on American Idol.

Maybe they should turn around the way you vote. Make it so you have to vote for the person you want off the show. I think this would be better representation of who should win. It's hard to say. Either way, i think Sanjaya should be voted off and this would probably do it.

i definitely think haley is next, then phil (or vice versa) over the next two weeks

sanjaya would be totally outmatched on every level by then and it would be unlikely for him to continue, no matter how many teen girls

after that it will be the then two remaining men and jordin, but in no particular order, but i would think jordin will outlast one of them

so it should square up as a match between lakisha and belinda and it's already obvious they are seasoned

if jordin was older and more experienced she may have had a chance at the finals and we would all being calling her a solid shot, week by week, as the frontrunner

i think when jennifer hudson got voted off the show and didn't win idol, she had not reached her peak...but now, it's obvious, she is in top form, even if she didn't win the oscar or was nominated

my prediction is ten years from now the biggest stars will be chris daughtry, jennifer hudson, and clay aiken

i think chris will be a hard rock icon for many years, jennifer will break into acting and have a long career, and clay aiken will have some pop star success from year to year but will find his true home in broadway or the adult contemporary charts (and if he can act, he may find some future in hollywood)

and these three will have job longevity over any 1st place idol contestant so far

making the top 12 is a foot in the door and gives one a lot of air time

oh, I really am getting sick of this...
I might just DVR them next, fast forward the results show, and repeat until the bad ones are off.

The Vote for Sanjaya campaign that Howard Stern and VFTW.com are pushing makes sense on alot of levels.

First off, The show is obviously rigged in the sense that the judges get to pick who makes it through to the finals. They're sticking people in there with less talent to make the show more interesting. If someone like Sanjaya or Antonella were to make it even to the final 2, this would backfire and possibly force the producers/judges to be more critical in selecting who makes it through.

Then there's the fact that with Sanjaya getting all these extra votes, it makes the rest of the competitors more aware that they're vulnerable, which should make them step up and perform at their best every week instead of flying through under the radar with "safe" performances.

You also can't ignore the fact that it makes the show alot more entertaining. I've watched it casually in the past, but this season I'm hooked. I love watching the results show and seeing that he's not only safe, but not even in the bottom group.

Lastly, it shows that the show is really a popularity contest and not a singing contest. You can look back to all of the previous years and pick at least 2-3 singers who were better than the winners of those seasons. Maybe if Sanjaya wins, that'll push the show to rethink their voting system and make more fair to the real talent.

And if you don't think there's enough of a following to push him through to the final show, think again. Stern has about 6 million listeners. Conservatively 10% of them are voting, at least 10 times each. And it's steamrolling. He's getting more and more people into it every week as they realize it's actually working. If he has 1/4 of his audience voting 10 times each, that would add up to about half of the show's average weekly claim of 30 million votes. And that's not counting VFTW.com and Sanyaya's actual fans' votes. ;)

Think about this. Stern pulls roughly 1/5th the audience of Idol. If Stern/VFTW and Idol have roughly the same level of pull participation then you can expect Sanjaya to make it to the top 5 even if noone on Idol likes him. Modest support can get him into the top 4. Anything above that and its all Idol's fanbase.

i hate to admit it, but i think you are right

the producers of the show probably tell the judges to have a certain percentage of the contestants that go to hollywood be good singers, and have others just be interesting but untalented filler who are bound to up the ratings

think of some of the strange ones this season...the columbian "hottie" who could dance way better than sing, the fidel castro look-a-like, and then of course, antonella and sanjaya, who did not really deserve to be in the top 24 out of over 100,000+ people

people will now pick on haley as the talentless one, but she does have a better than average voice, but not compared to the top singers left in this competition

I think Sanjaya will get voted off after Phil and Haley are gone. As the number of contestants gets smaller, the percentage of people voting for other contestants goes up. At some point a critical mass will be reached that the VFTW crowd can't overcome. Also, I think there will be a backlash of pissed off Idol fans who will vote much more often to directly combat the pro-Sanjaya vote.

As far as Idol being a popularity contest rather a singing competition, when I vote, I vote based on who sings the best each week. I do occasionally vote for more than one singer if I feel it was a close contest.

I take my vote seriously even though I have never bought the music of any Idol contestant and probably never will.

I would totally have bought Gina's CD. I hope she comes out with one.

I just can't wait until Haley (hello, boring) and Phil (god, so annoying and he looks like bat boy!) are gone. Then there's Chris and Blake, who are good-looking as HELL and have adorable personalities to them, but only Blake is really talented, and they're both still not the greatest vocals and nothing compared to the rest of the ladies.

Simon actually went as far as to say that he'd quit if Sanjaya actually won the whole thing.
And managed to foul up the whole thing in the process. Now Howard Stern & others have gotten a crew of people to call in just to hose the show and try to get Simon to stick to his word. He's not even in the bottom 3!

but he wasn't in the top 3 either

it's a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll, or win this whole idol contest

It was so bad tonight any one of them could go home, The sad thing is that Sanjaya was not that bad tonight. He needs a shave tho.:p

It was so bad tonight...

I am still recuperating from the pain inflicted. Advice to Melinda: Before performing a song that is supposed to be accompanied by sexy movement, do not state that you are so not sexy. Let the public decide what works and what does not ... there is no need for any performer to enumerate their deficiencies, real or imagined.

This might not make sense but Melinda's humbleness is getting annoying. She is right, she's not sexy. She looks more like something out of middle earth. Even if she ends up not winning Idol she'll still have a great career on some broadway show.

What was with tonight? Boring. Where was the fire?! Latin! oh well... what is sad is... it made Sanjaya look normal. My guess Phil.

Blake had the best performance of the night, but that's not saying much. I don't even know how to guess, at this point, who might go home tonight, but I thought that Chris and Phil had the worst performances of the night.

About halfway through Sanjaya's performance, I said to my wife, "You know, he's not doing a bad job with it." She paused a moment, and replied, "Yeah... but he's still creepy." :D

I agree, at first it was refreshing – it is a good idea to be a little humble but sheesh, it's also nice to see some confidence and show a little *in it to win it* attitude.

Melinda looks like a little kid needing approval after every performance.

Everyone struggled, but Phil and Haley just plain sucked. Blake was the best, but again that ain't saying too much.

And completely disagree about Melinda. I find her still to be a breath of fresh air. I hope she never loses that quality.

latin is a very hard category to sing and it was surprising that sanjaya was not the worst performance

song choice saved sanjaya from taking the axe later on tonight, i think

simon could have slaughtered sanjaya, as he usually does, but he couldn't find a solid reason to this week

sanjaya obviously has less talent than everybody left, including haley, but if he chooses his songs well, and the teenage girls keep on voting, it may be a three way race with melinda, lakisha, and sanjaya (of course, he could never win or even get close to the eventual winner)

the rest of the contestants have put on a brave front, especially with the likes of melinda and lakisha, and they have to be given a ton a credit for that

i would hate to precede or follow either of those two women on any american idol show, as it would make me, and almost anybody out there, look very bad

i bet lakisha gets more votes than melinda this week since melinda just can't spice up the stage enough for latin music...melinda does climb out of her shell on stage but nothing could have made her convincing in this category

if there ever is a heavy metal night, i don't think melinda could pull it off with her persona even though her voice could handle anything in hard rock

Sanjaya's not horrible as long as he doesn't push his voice (that was as hard for me to say as it was for Simon). But that's exactly what I don't like about him, he just stays in his own little comfort zone and doesn't push the boundaries of his voice. I thought that was one of the big things the judges were looking for, a willingness to go past your comfort zone and becoming a better singer in the process.

I think the best performance of the night was Jordin. Blake was good too, even though it wasn't one of those "wow" performances.
