This is good for the iOS 5 but developers are still designing their apps (and games) to market to a bigger population and not for the powerful processors alone. So basically, apps are still made for the slower 3GS. Fast processors are just catered to spec who*res and that's it. :D

Your iPhone 4's will still function equally compared to the new phone 98% of the time. I know geeks would love that 2% nevertheless. :)

Imagine developers for the android side where many phones perform widely different!!

Performance with the iPhone 4 has never been a problem.

It has when it comes to games; the graphics performance is seriously underpowered for the number of pixels on the screen. The A5 is much more appropriate for that resolution.

Some of us feel like we know exactly what the iPhone "5" will be like:

iPhone 4S (N94)
- iPhone 4 case design (3.5" Screen), but improved internals
- CDMA and GSM in one phone, "World Phone"
- HSPA+ (at least 14.4mbps)
- 1GB RAM
- A5 Processor
- SGX 543MP2 GPU (Same as iPad 2)
- Assistant Voice Recognition

You forgot iOS 5 (granted it will be available on older devices too, but still, iOS5 is gonna be a soft revolution).

The sharks on Wall Street would immediately start circling Tim Cook if his first major product announcement was a dud like this.

It will probably be the best selling smartphone of all time. Unlikely anyone with any business knowledge will label it a dud.

I am sure it won't be as aspiring as all those android devices trying to reach gold record status

Fascinating how the iPhone 4 is still the #1 one selling phone with the highest customer satisfaction rating. Clearly between the Antenna never working and the glass always being broken , all of those people are delusional with really, really tough skin.

That one really does boggle the mind. The two things do not make sense going together! I think it comes down to the cross-section they survey, and how they define satisfaction with a product vs. certain aspects that are intensely annoying - if people don't want to make calls on the thing, then hells ya satisfaction plus!! In fact I guess that's what does it - even though dropping reception comes at the drop of a hat and the design is not as good as the 3g/s, I would still probably claim satisfaction with the product overall myself!

It is quite funny actually, as just above, we all surely complain about the devices on a regular basis, but that really is quite removed from not being satisfied with them - humans are curious creatures :D.

Another theory is that those so-called issues are actually non-issues in the real world.

I don't get why other companies bother putting big fancy GPU's in their phones when there are hardly any apps available for their phones to showcase it.

I think Apple is just trollin' with this 4S thing. It doesn't seem to make the least bit of sense. Why has everyone been freaking out over it? It'll be a 5. Apple likes numbers now, not number-letter combos. That's very 2009.

PROTIP: On Tuesday, wear goggles. And breathe through your nose. While the next iPhone is announced, it's going to get messy.

Yup.

And I'd be shocked if any of the apps written in the near future (read: 8-12 months) will take advantage of this so as to not to alienate the legacy hardware in the iP4.

Big speed increase that you won't see any real benefit from for some time.

Oh, and good luck enjoying your fast graphics with a shattered glass back or glass screen because the iPhone 4S continued to use fragile build materials and refused to put a protective bezel around the phone to protect the edges from direct shattering impacts.

I guess that means you were shocked when apps started taking advantage of IP4's display resolution almost right away

Lol, 3GS users claiming there's problems with a device they don't actually own or use then claiming those that do use it are lying to themselves. Classic.

You're funny. Wonder how my iPhone 4 has survived so many falls on hard surfaces. Must be because it's extremely fragile.

My wife dropped her iPhone 4 from about 18 inches and the front cracked, she then dropped it from about 3 feet and the back shattered. I love the iphone 4, but it is fragile.

You shouldn't have an iphone if you are going to keep dropping it. I dropped my iphone once in 4 years. Your ihpne will break one day and it will be an expensive mistake, but I can say "Told you so".

I have probably dropped my iPhone 4 30 times with no damage.

Maybe your wife is a bad dropper. Also a very basic case / bumper is great fun.

It'll sell well because it's an iOS device, but you can bet your bottom dollar that you'll start to see stories questioning Apple's judgment about releasing the same phone 16 months after it's original release and wondering where the "wow" factor is without Jobs.

For every story there is an opposite story. Last July I went for a bike ride and when I stopped for gas I pulled out my phone and fumbled it. In trying to catch it I only managed in slam dunking it into the pavement. It was just fine.

It's not half as annoying as trying to fathom why Apple continues to build phones out of glass (or, if they're going to insist on using glass, why they don't at least use a bezel to protect the edges -- the most vulnerable part of tempered glass -- from direct impacts that cause shattering).

It's $30 to replace glass (which, while cheap-ish, is still money out of your pocket), but the issue is that there's no good reason to use glass in the first place.

True - aluminum LCDs are the future.

Yes, just like there are no Retina Display enabled apps before June 2011 (12 months since iPhone 4's debut) /s

"It's the software, stupid." - Steve Jobs

This was already obvious -.-

One thing to note out, though is that the iPhone 5 will probably perform better than the iPad because the GPU will have to power a lower-res screen. xD

Performance with the iPhone 4 has never been a problem. Screen size has.

You mean screen awesomeness has never been an issue.

I don't want a 58" 480i tv over a 46" 1080p tv. These bigger screens just further enhance the lower resolutions most those devices have.

Would you rather watch something in SD on an old 15" tv or in hd on an IPad?

Chip speed doesn't matter much when the network still sucks. I'm lookin' at you AT&T!!! Well I guess non-online games will work great.

It'll run like water until the iOS upgrade cycle makes it run like molasses.[/QUOTE]

So damn true and I hate that!! Why does that always happen. Just like when ios 4.3 came out it was nice then an update happen then it was like wth happen to my phone!!

I am still shocked and amazed by the sheer number of people still butt-hurt by the news that there might not be a iPhone 5, and just a 4s.

"the iPhone 4 is so behind"

Tis what I keep hearing, that fact has little to do with hardware, if it is a update then there will be a camera, memory maybe, a new chip and more ram. Okay....what else does it need physically to be ahead of the game? I'm not talking about the way it looks because that's a cop-out ******** argument. All the real goodies are in the iOS, derp. So we need stereo speakers like the Surround? Or a built in kick stand?

If you hate it so much go to your android. Me I simply can't wait to get my hands on iOS 5 and use it day to day.

Yeah, but most people in this forum are more preoccupied with the shape of the form than with the vastly improved performance!! It leads me to believe that they would much rather get the new shape than a better phone!!

What's to be letdown about?? We are getting a BETTER Phone??

Or would you rather have less performance and a pretty phone??

This is a tool, not an accessory!!

I thought that specs didn't matter to Apple customers?

You mean the same "wow" factor as going from the 3G to 3GS that you currently own?

Android handset makers are in cahoots with providers into buying random phones as often as possible. That is why they are all spec over substance and why they just keep cranking out new devices instead of evolving great ones. It is a masterfully run scam which was sop before apple showed up. It continues outside of apple still.
