Games seem to look a little better on my iPhone 4 than my iPad 2.

That's because of the retina screen mate, a lot more pixels more densely packed in a smaller display. But the iPad 3 should improve on it if it gets a retina screen and even more so with the rumoured A6 processor.

This is pointless news about the A5 as everybody expected it. The iPhone A5 will be underclocked and have more RAM then the iPad 2 A5, the exact same as they did with the iPad A4 and iPhone 4 A4.

----------

So when will the iPhone have better graphics performance than the entry MBP?

Take a look at the PSVITA graphics to get an idea, it's GPU and CPU are quad core high speed versions of mobile phone chips. But computers are always going to advance too so in theory never.

I highly doubt that the A5 they shoehorn into the iPhone is going to run at the same clocks as the iPad. Same as it was with the A4. So the performance tests of the iPad2 are most likely not the level of performance you'll see from an A5 in an iPhone. It'll probably have the same 20% or so underclock that was in the iPhone4 in comparison to the iPad

Actually, the A4 is the same size (same sized process used) in both the original iPad and iPhone 4.

Apple/Samsung could have moved the A5 to a smaller process - they actually would have to to get the SoC to even fit in the iPhone. This would result in cooler and more efficient chips. So in theory, they could still run just as fast as the iPad 2 and I suspect it's one reason why we've had to wait so long for this next iPhone update.

This is also one possible reason why Apple is moving A6 production to TSMC, they are already at a 28nm process.

You really think somebody with a 3GS has never used an iPhone 4? I'm sorry, but if you really think that you have to be an idiot.

I have a 3GS and some of my best friends have iPhone 4's. So not only do I pick theirs up and use their phones extremely often, I also pick them up and use them at the Apple store whenever I am at the mall.
Maybe you missed the part that said you own AND use it?

Simply using your friends phone for 5 minutes does not mean you can tell how 'fragile' it supposedly is nor how well it keeps a call.

Wow, we're only one day away from the official announcement, and still NO ONE really knows what the iPhone 5 is going to be like.

Sometimes Apple managed to leak every little detail about their new products, and then sometimes like this time they don't give us a single crumb of information.
What are you talking about?
Right now most of the people in blogosphere knows about tomorrow's iPhone(read iPhone 4S). Apple is good at keeping secrets but they can't control leaks.

If you not dare, explain how can a dual core 1.2 Ghz be slower than a 1Ghz Dual core, its just not logic tome, i don't believe in that benchmark!

It all depends on the architecture and design of the chip in question.
Work completed per clock cycle is more important than the Megahertz rating.

Judging computer performance by GHz alone is a common misconception.

There are a lot of other factors that affect performance in computers.

Processor speed is only one of them. Memory speed and architecture, internal bus speeds, storage technology, and software (OS and application) all contribute heavily to the perceived speed of a computer.
The clock speed of a CPU (the GHz) has nothing to do with relative performance of the processor... except when comparing it to other processors in the same product line.
A processor that can execute more instructions per clock cycle can run "slower" and provide the same or better performance as a processor that executes fewer instructions per clock cycle running "faster".

The idea here is that it doesn't matter how fast the processor is, if the processor is sitting around twiddling it's thumbs while it waits for data from the hard drive/network/memory etc.

In simple terms, a system with processors and motherboard that implement a better architecture, such as:

4x to 6x larger level 1 caches

Faster cpu to memory controller bus or a processor integrated FSB,

Wider FSB and memory bus - 128 bits

An Exclusive NON-shared FSB on each Processor

An Exclusive NON-shared memory bank on each processor

Can easily execute many more instructions per clock cycle.
How much can the processor do per Ghz or Mhz? That is what you should be asking yourself. You mean to tell me you don't know that a Sandybridge processor is faster than a Core 2 duo even it they are running at the same Ghz?

And yes the A5 is faster than the Samsung Exynos processor. And even the new Qualcomm processor running at 1.5Ghz.

No chance.

No no the iPhone 5 WILL have the A6 chip as the iPhone 5 won't be launched until next year :D

Faster in an iPad 2, we will have to see with test results how much faster the iPhone model will be as no doubt it WILL be underclocked, saves burning our hands and killing the battery in a couple of hours haha. If the iPhone launched tomorrow has the same design as the iPone 4 then the battery can only support so much processing power.

Hahaha, I didn't realize not not being able to hold onto a phone was such an epidemic :D I guess I'd recommend: some kind of bumper/case, staying away from the Vaseline and maybe avoid using it while intoxicated.

The thing about this benchmark that kind of makes me chuckle, is Apple always avoids the "speeds and feeds" spin on products - yet, they're still very competitive on just that metric (combined with the overall effective performance, even more so I'd say).

Also, about A4 vs. A5 and optimization. A faster CPU/GPU has inherent performance increases, especially around the core apps. The optimization being mentioned is generally adding additional features, improved graphics, etc., that would have reduced the app on an A4 to a sub-optimal experience.

Bottom line: the A5 powered iPhone will be faster OOTB, and in the near future have apps optimized for the A5 that will improve the user experience.

I would expect a die shrink at the very least.

The A5 chip in iPad is too big and power hungry for the phones. A5 for iPhone will have the same core but GPU part (and other modules) might be changed so it is very likely that iPhone will not have the same GPU performance as iPad.
Exactly! However it is completely possible to shrink the die for the iPhone to lower power.

The flip side are the long standing rumors that PA Semi was split into two teams one designing processors for phones and one team for tablet or higher power devices. Considering Apples volumes it would make a lot of sense to optimize for the platform.
Quote: "Right away the primary observation is that the A5 is a VERY BIG IC, with a processor die size of 12.1 x 10.1 mm. You'll recall that the Apple A4 was a package-on-package with the processor and its supporting memory stacked one capsule atop another and it had a processor die size of 7.3mm x 7.3mm."

If Apple delivers a processor built on a 22 to 28 nm process, that chip would be much smaller even if additional capability was added.

Pot>kettle and all that. I am a day one 3GS owner who has never used or held an iPhone 4. I've seen plenty of them around but never felt the need to ask someone if I could hold their phone. I am on a two year upgrade cycle and perfectly content to enjoy what I own without coveting the next iteration. Never tried a 3G model either.

I think its safe to say that todays "cell phones" aren't really just "phones". It's a computer on the palm of your hand.

Oh no, poor you. Did you lose your job or your sanity?

?????? what are you implying here?

Honestly, anyone who would abandon an entire platform just because of phone hardware is really just in the market for a phone. So, good luck to you.

Personally, I don't really care for mobile phones, but since we pretty much have to have one these days, it doesn't matter what the hardware looks like as far as I'm concerned... What matters is that it won't become obsolete before the contract expires and that it works well with my iMac and iPad.

Furthermore, why would you make a stupid statement like that without waiting until the product is actually released... Do you really want people to know you're an idiot before you even get the chance to actually prove how stupid you are?

dude for the 4th time......I have an iphone 4... im not selling it any time soon... it was a joke... but i would like tO have a secondary phone... because i travel.... and the infuse 4g is cheaper than the galaxy 2 and has the siize screen i want...

i wish you had read all of my comments in this thread,..... i wont get the iphone 5 now no matter what it has... 600 is just to much for me....since i am going to be traveling soon i cant go under a two year contract.....???? make sense... LOL.

Here's a thought I just saw on a You Tube video. What if we get an iPhone 4S tomorrow, a cheaper iPhone 4, BUT the 4S is alos lowered in price with the 8meg camera, A5 processor and then Apple ANNOUNCE an iPhone 5 for launch next year? And the iPhone 5 is a totally new design with the A6 processor?

Apple will keep people happy then and increase sales and make the competition sweat all in one go.

why does the iphone have to have a redesign to be the iphone 5 anyway???? was the iphone 3g a resign of the iphone 2g????

Because everyone is assuming the iPhone 5 will be the tear drop design with a 4" or bigger screen. It will be a totally new design, and yes the iPhone 3 was a redesign from the iPhone. iPhone 4 a redesign from the iPhone 3GS

I have a 3gs. It lags, takes forever to get the camera app up. Takes cruddy pictures especially without fantastic lighting. Volume up/down buttons are sketchy. Headphone jack is unreliable. Dock connector is about to die (stuff has to be plugged in just right. I have to smash the home button to get it to register.

I want a phone that flows through the interface like water, gets to the camera app quickly and takes good pictures, even without fabulous amounts of light. I believe I will get all of that on tuesday.

Yep. Weather its in the iPhone 4 case or a redesign. I don't really care at this point. I had this 3gs for 2 years now and i want/need to treat myself.

If it's not going to do Adobe Flash or real gaming, what's the point of even faster graphics?

"OMGz!!!!111 Teh Angry Birds r s000 much fastArz n0w."

Sony Xperia Play 4G. Emulators + Game ROMs + Gamepad = endless gaming options.

Yeah, but most people in this forum are more preoccupied with the shape of the form than with the vastly improved performance!! It leads me to believe that they would much rather get the new shape than a better phone!!

You're correct in believing that. I would definitely get a new form factor than the one I have already used. I need to experience something different; I need a better feel my hand. iPhone4 doesn't do it at all.

Sorry if that hurts someone but 3G/3GS was very comfortable to hold.

But I already know that A5 is a beast and the next iPhone will have >768MB of RAM; so I am really not bothered about that.

Puff!
