Apparently Apple stores run a "kiosk" app on the display computers that has been shown in another thread to be cause of severe UI lag on the rMBP.

Do you know that for a fact? If it is true, they would need to have a kiosk Lion OS as people are seeing the stutter in various apps and within Lion with all apps closed.

Has this been verified or it hearsay? Why would they run a kiosk app? I 've yet to see a mac in the store with a kiosk app that I was aware of that is.

squashy, thank you. I dont know how i missed that thread. this is exactly what i was seeing at the store. exactly. I will read through that thread in its entirety tonight and let this rest for the day. My heart is breaking because I really wanted this unit. I have been waiting since i first heard the rumors months ago. Sadly I might have to skip this generation and stick with the 2012 model non retina and stick an ssd in there.

The ONLY reason im looking for an answer is because if its a software limitation Ill buy, but if its a CPU problem Its unnacceptable. I cannot spend the money on a machine that will permanently perform like this, and at this point its a guessing game as to why its happening. nobody seems to really know. which is bizarre.

Agree. From https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1394728/

Some sites still do register a slight scroll lag after enabling those GPU acceleration options but it's tons better than Safari and Chrome on stock settings. ;)

I love your face! you just made me so freaking happy. It is ridiculous the difference. I legit hated opening up my browser cause of my frustration. Now it is WAY smoother. Thanks both to Office Space and KingArthurVI!http://cdn.macrumors.com/vb/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

You'll have to read the thread (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1386070/) and decide for yourselves. :)

Me, I was pretty convinced that the kiosk app was the culprit after I originally read the thread.

had to chime in. after a handful of days in the apple store seeing this stutter and tearing of the OS i was pretty much convinced it was the machines. today i was in bb getting something unrelated and checked out their rMBP base models, and it was silky smooth. i opened safari, imovie, and three other apps, then started watching a 1080p video and started switching to launchpad and between screens. nothing,not a tear or stutter or anything. im convinced 100 percent apple is running demo modes or kiosk apps. 100 percent. either that or there is a SERIOUS quality control issue and more than a handful of these units are bad.

It's obvious that Apple Engineers were concerned about the video performance of the rMBP. That's why they over-clocked the video card and are using CPU assisted Safari scrolling. They were hoping no one would notice or the Apple faithful would come to the defense of their product.

On the basis of this thread, I popped into the Apple store and tested scrolling on both the rMBP and the classic MBP. Many people in this forum don't consider the 'Apple Store test' a legitimate method, and to those people, I apologise. I don't have the money to drop on both an rMBP and a MBP (though I'll have an rMBP in a few weeks alongside my 2011 13" MBP). From my experience in the store, with the rMBP set to its optimal retina resolution, scrolling lagged a bit compared to the classic model. I was scrolling on the Apple website (nothing special), and the difference was noticeable. I didn't check the software versions, so I'm not sure if the rMBP had been upgraded or not. That's just my experience, and I'm not knocking those whose experiences have been different.

A french guy posted a "side by side" comparison of the rMBP and MBP scrolling.

Skip thru the clip to:

-> 1:09 for rMBP
-> 1:26 for MBP.

The difference is quite noticeable for anyone who's never seen both side by side.

This pretty much sums up the experience I had in the store.

Hi, I've got a small but annoying issue with my late 2013 15" base rMBP.
When it boots, the desktop shows up in a laggy way, not fluid. Everything else works fine, safari, iPhoto, iMovie, pages...

I'm using it in the recommended resolution, the wallpaper is 2880 x 1800, and the only app that opens automatically is Dropbox.

I've been using a late 2012 for a while and it doesn't do that. The desktop shows up smoothly when booted.

Any ideas will be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
