So serious question here. And I’m not even saying Apple is the good guy here. But why do people here seems to give Apple so much heat when they raise the price. While fashion companies that sells wallets, clothes that charges for thousands are getting by? Almost every single “apple could do this” argument I can use it on the fashion industry...
In my opinion it's because the pricing has been rising steadily for years now and perceived value hasn't risen to match. I just mentioned that most people wont see a difference between the standard LCD screen and OLED Retina XDR or notice that zooming is digital versus optical on the 11. However, that's not how Apple works. They never go with 'Meh, it's good enough'. While it would be fine to offer a less expensive panel the plan probably has always been to move to OLED on all it's phone models and that's pricey.

As well, that price covers everything. The hardware and software development costs. The servers that run iMessage and FaceTime. Users that don't take advantage of those features don't understand the costs behind them or see the value but those features are enormously popular and drive sales.

All of this could be because of the gut punch our recent (and on-going) pandemic delivered to us all. Apple is just now coming off of probably paying it's employees to do practically nothing for 3 or 4 months and is dealing with suppliers that faced similar difficulties and shutdowns. A lot factors into pricing.

And Apple, famously, has Scrooge McDuck levels of cash in the bank. It's already been said here that it's just a bad look but the job of Apple employees is to demonstrate that value to purchasers in the store for people that don't already see it and really most people finance their phones. After trade-in and spreading that extra $50 over two years it will hardly be noticed.

It's fine to complain about high entry price of iPhone 12. But for not including crummy $29 EarPods?

I really wonder what percentage of people even take those things out of the box? I know I haven't even touched one of those in years

It's fine to complain about high entry price of iPhone 12. But for not including crummy $29 EarPods?

You’re misunderstanding. The EarPods are $29 if you purchase those separately, that’s not what Apple is charging the consumer if they’re included in the box. If Apple were to remove the EarPods from the box, it probably would only reduce the price differential by a few dollars per unit, which wouldn’t Transcend much of a cost savings for the consumer, but probably would save Apple an extensive amount of money not including them anymore in the box.

[I also suspect most consumers wouldn’t have a problem with Apple removing the wired EarPods from the box, as Bluetooth is the primary, especially being they removed the 3.5 mm Jack.]

My clothes drier didn't come with a power cable, either, had to buy it separately. Many printers I order for client's don't come with USB cables, have to buy those separately. It's a pain, but it's not as if Apple invented this phenomenon.
I'm in the "double the base storage, and I'm fine with it" camp.

Some people yes, some people no. It depends. I personally think the perceived value is rising. Especially if one looks at the incremental features over the last few phones.

I'm probably among the small few who are not surprised by this, if it holds to be true.

My rule personal rule - Always expect Apple to cost more so you can be pleasantly surprised when prices remain the same or, in rare instances, are inexplicably dropped lower.

Understood, my point is that people (consumers) tend to focus on what they are not getting versus what they are, hence my comment on it being bad optics and not necessarily a bad value.
I’m sure Apple already knew that the $50 price cut for last year’s iPhone 11 wasn’t going to be sustainable for the 12, but they still chose to do it 🤷‍♂️

Apple cares less about optics than the actual value. They know that if they provide the value, customers will buy.

Now will it still only have 64 GB as a base is the real question. At least increase the free iCloud storage from 5 GB so people can at least store their back ups without trouble. So much complaining and unnecessary trouble shooting of people with incomplete back ups in support every day could be avoided

Yes. You. Are. Thank you for acknowledging that.

I also appreciate that you're not complaining about it.

Apple is only about one thing... profit (like every other for-profit company). If they can get it by making customers happy, they'll do it. If making a bit more profit means making customers a little less happy, they'll do it (as long as the net profit is more). If they can make even more profit by squeezing those who are captive to their ecosystem, they'll do that too.

I don't say that with any anger... but then again, I'm not captive. ;)

I prefer to use either multi USB-port charger (like Anker's) or Qi wireless charger. I never take 5W USB charger out of the iPhone box. If I had to buy a USB charger, it certainly won't be Apple's $19 5W USB charger.

As for the EarPods, I suppose it's valuable for some. But $29 for EarPods isn't exactly a ton of money when you are spending $749 and up for iPhone. If the rumor is true and Apple is bumping the internal storage from 64GB to 128GB, I think that's a good trade off especially since we are also getting OLED, 5G, and other goodness.
I can’t wrap my head around how much Apple is charging for standard chargers — the extortionistic pricing is just baffling.

That alone is a fair reason to be mad. Wether it's out of pure love for Apple or just stuck in the ecosystem, Apple knows you won't leave and raises the price.
Or reduces the price if they can afford to. From the XR to the 11, Apple cut the price from $749 to $699.
