Those old enough to remember the first 4G devices and the service charges for nonexistent 4G service should be wise enough to not jump on 2020 iPhones solely for the 5G capability.

If you want cutting-edge technologies, you have to be prepared to pay a little more. Eliminating the charger and earpods might save Apple a few bucks, but it nowhere near offsets the cost of integrating modern 5G.

Yes, release a phone $50 more than last year's that has a smaller screen: that'll make sense to average consumer.

Or Apple knows that we'll pay "whatever" for a small phone with up to date specs. I blame MR forums for that 😂

Because not everyone will. I suppose they will adjust pricing if necessary based on units sold.

You can mitigate less units sold by raising margins, while at it, being Apple, you may even sell a boatload anyways too. Win-win.

Probably the first time I'll skip my 2 year upgrade. XS is doing great, doesn't seem like I got it almost 2 years ago.

iPhone 2008
iPhone 3GS 2010
iPhone 4 (white - late intro) 2012
iPhone 6 2014
iPhone 7+ 2016
iPhone XS 2018

I'll wait for whatever they call the 2021 phone. I also said this about my 7+ but caved because that phone was GIGANTIC.

This year there was a $50 price cut; Apple knows people won’t pay “whatever”. They knew very well that they’d sell more at $699 than $749.

If the charger and pods were included, they would charge even more. Stupid argument.

This is an odd decision. One of the biggest reasons that wired headphones were included, was to give them protection from cellphone radiation concerns because the phone is heald against your head. With headphones it showed some concern and allowed people to use the phone without putting it near your head.

Has this ever been disproven? What about 5G?

There was lots of talk on tech podcasts/boards about skipping the first generation of 5G iPhones, due to the fact that 5G isn't on the immediate horizon for quite a lot of people. Living in central Illinois, using AT & T as my carrier, I've heard basically nothing about 5G. So, perhaps it would be a good year to stick with my iPhone 11 ProMax, even though I pay for the option to upgrade every year.

I’ll still probably buy it, but why doesn’t Apple just absorb the cost this time around? Technology only gets cheaper over time? Why can’t they take a slight hit to the profit margins for this model and before they know it, things will settle down? They’ve got to be doing amazing with their magical services like Apple TV+, Apple Music, Apple News, and their runaway success with AirPods.

Being slightly sarcastic on the Apple TV+ and News😅

You're assuming the cost of making such are the same. They're packing more tech in, and that generally costs more.

Technology only gets cheaper over time?

Brand new technology isn't generally cheap. When it becomes older and more mass-market is when it generally becomes cheaper. That's why the brand new TV models are more expensive, but you can get a slightly older model (or new model that utilizes last years high-end display) for less.

The early rumors of $550-$650 had me tempted, but the 5.4" looks like it will be closer to $1K to get any meaningful storage unless they up the base to 128gb. Guessing I'll stick with the 2020 SE.

The focus is on screen size here. I'm not sure how long you've been around on the forums, but there's been many people through the years that have shouted here "I will pay ANYTHING for a 5-sized devices." (Even 4 size is thrown out there every once in a while, haha)

and that includes me on the size: I don't want a huge device. But I also don't want to pay a ridiculous price for it.

Certainly depends on where you are. AT&T has my area of Minneapolis covered, so I'm all in for it.

I don’t get mad at this stuff anymore. I also don’t buy iPhones every year anymore. I only upgrade when my current phones dies on me so I’ll get the next iPhone in about 3-4 years.

They’ll probably still have a tough time keeping up with demand for a while. That 5.4” iPhone 12 is going to sell like crazy.
