Call it what you want. I doubt Apple "asked" for anything before putting this out here for the world to see.

What do you mean call it what you want? You've just backed up what I said.

It was previewed as iTV but RELEASED (that there is the key word) as AppleTV.

This stuff might make sense considering Apple has hired the top three inventors from Segway.

Is that true? Interesting. A mobile tv, balanced on one or two wheels that follows you around, controlled by an iRing. When you are done watching, it retreats into a closet. In time it would morph into a personal robot and not long after that into a girlfriend/boyfriend and Apple stock will soar to 3.4 million per share...

I have little (or no) interest in purchasing an Apple-branded television, but I'm finding myself incredibly interested in what they choose to call it. I mean seriously, what do you call an Apple TV when you already have a product called Apple TV?

Apple TV? :p

Here's the prototype of the iRing...

It will be called the iTV, because I edited my post as I believe this will be an American market product only, I can't see how it will work anywhere else? The market for a very expensive 50" TV with pay on demand services is going to be pretty limited, and as for iPad control well I can already control all my BSkyB HD satellite boxes with apps on Android or iOS devices so their is no advantage their either, in fact it would almost have to copy Sky and Virgin services but with different pricing models.

Apple should do an all glass remote, that is completely black. Underneath could be an lcd screen where variable button options light up depending on whats needed, and when its not a you could use various gestures. Would do away with buttons, just have a home button to go back to your menu/guide. Basically an elongated iPod touch with no apps!!!

It was never intended to be released as iTV, it was just the codename they used during development.

In a rare move, Apple provided a sneak peek of the long rumored Apple media center. Currently without a final product name, it has been codenamed iTV and has the apperance of a flattened Mac mini.

Very interesting. I do remember seeing Apple got a patent on retina screen TV's this summer or something. Not sure how that stuff works, but it could definitely be a possibility!

It's true.

According to Vance, most of the ex-Segway team that has found work at Apple works on Apple's existing flagship devices, while Morrell himself allegedly works in the Mac software group.

Ah...just waiting for all the "me too" strap hangers like Samsung, Google, and Microsoft to announce their own versions of this design which "Apple stole from them"...obviously.;)

The MS version will run Windows 8 and will be a touch screen TV that you'll have to walk across the room and touch the screen to change the channel. Or you could buy the MS "mop handle" with a rubber tip to poke from your chair.

There is already a remote App that controls the Apple TV. And you could just program an App for your iPhone and do the same thing. That is assuming Apple opens up the Apple TV for Apps.

Heck, I bet the Magic Mouse could be used to control an Apple TV as the Apple TV has bluetooth.

What about the iPhone? That is subsidised by the phone companies.

And it is the main source of revenue for Apple.

So the OP should have said "Apple makes the vast majority of its sales due to selling subsidized products. Selling cheap with the aid of third party subsidies is in Apple's DNA. It is how they currently stay afloat."

iB.S.

People's fingers are various sizes - not sure how they'd pull off a comfortable iRing.

Making some sort of universal "ring" is the easy part in all this.

How many of us really care about bells and whistles of the hardware at this point? How content is delivered is far more important.

Content is important. But I do care A LOT about "bells & whistles" on the future of TV's. Namely the display itself. And if apple launches a TV, you can bet ur life I'm interested in the "bells".

I wonder how long it will last on a charge?

The ring will be completely passive. No charging required.

It'll be very small and coated with a material that is highly reflective to a particular wavelength of invisible light. A camera on the TV will monitor the position of the ring in the room and watch for gestures.

Actually, there will be five rings - one for each finger - so you can do multitouch gestures and other magnanimous, hand-waving stuff - just like a wizard. "Be gone, crappy soap opera!" and BAM, it's gone. Magic!

In my dreams, of course. :)

I think a lot of this rumor will prove to be true. We already knew :apple: is working on improving the TV experience. I Like the iRing idea. How the heck do you get a battery in there? Or do you just rest it somewhere for it to recharge?
It must have an accelerometer in there or the tv will have a motion tracking camera.
I don't think people will have the endurance to hand wave through 500 channels though.

A roomba with a telly on top. Awesome! :)

Instead of "Find My iPhone", your iTelly comes to you.

Even if its a US only product, I very much doubt it will be called iTV as the trademark is already taken in the US by ITV.

iRing

I see Apple's schwartz is as big as mine...

If Apple produced a 60" TV, at 4k resolution, with a beautiful interface and iDevice integration and a full suite of content providers... for $2500... they would sell tens of millions of them...

Indeed. Even if they sold a regular 1080p TV at that price with the promise that it is "easy to use" (and with a few hooks into existing apple products), they would sell tens of millions of them.
