Pressure sensitivity would be great for use with the Apple Pencil.
But at least for now you can use the Pencil as a very fine tip stylus for making fine, clear adjustments where your finger would otherwise not do or be in the way.
At least on the XS Max.

What is entertaining is that when Steve Jobs mentioned how we are going to interact with iPhone and he mentions mouse, stylus and then reveals finger, oddly enough there is mouse support in iOS 13 via accessibility. :p

We’re not getting the future we were promised. We’re getting the future we deserved.

XS Max for scale. Neither option for charging this “tumor” is ideal.

Reverse wireless charging... unless they go flat sides like the iPad it’s going to have to be placed on the back. Imagine the cases needed to accommodate this. Swoon!
OG Pencil charging... (sorry I didn’t actually have a lightning pencil to photograph). Holy F**K! Perks: Instead of reaching into your pocket, you just grab the pencil which is already sticking out of your pocket.

Interesting. I guess if you own an Apple Pencil, it’s primary use is for the iPad. I’m not sure when I’ll need to use an AP on an iPhone.
For anyone but serious artist or illustrator, I don’t think Apple Pencil is that much useful for them on iPad either. At least right now lying on the bed, I don’t want to use Apple Pencil, despite having one.
That pencil gonna look ridiculous yuuuge for a iPhone maybe a small stylist would just do fine and I don't understand Tim Apple why are we backwards I thought iPhones was supposedly none stylist or pencil.
Yes, current pencil will look awful on iPhone. And if a pencil for iPhone is there, there gonna be no way to store it as long as it is not as small as Samsung S Pen. I don’t see this coming.

Apple could include Apple Pencil with iPhone Y (11) because some people in media are saying wait for the 2020 5G iPhone.

Bigger battery? No!
Notch-less screen? No!
Bump-less camera? No!
Pencil? Yes!

Huh? Couldn't give a **** about the notch, my phone has a case which doubles as my wallet, and the pencil is not coming to the iPhone. I can't speak for next gen iOS, but not in 13. Also, the Pencil would need a new design to package to the iPhone. Possibly, the new iPhone 11 would have a strip on the side or back like the iPad Pro does, for the purpose of charging the Pencil. I would never want to draw with a Pencil on such a small screen though. Even the Max is too little. After that, the next best use for a Pencil on my iPhone would be for tapping through columns on spreadsheets. At that point, I have more suitable devices. Pencil would be the wrong choice for iPhone.

Oh, you don’t realize the full potential of that thing...

A pencil, a handle and a selfie stick.
A pencil. A handle. A selfie stick.
In a one device.
And we’re calling it iLollipop.

Available now at just $199.

The creative possibilities that the Apple Pencil provides for artists and the type of stylus that Steve Jobs talked about are two very different things.

I don't want to draw on such a tiny interface. The Max is even too small. For anything more than a doodle, I'm reaching for a device I'm going to be engaged with for hours on end, and you want a larger interface for that than what can be mapped out on the surface real estate of a phone. Reaching for my iPhone and Pencil to sketch anything of real worth seems about as logical as installing copies of Doom into objects that should not be a console for Doom. Sure you can! But why though?

Considering all the rumors have been about the 2020 model, this might be a throw in-feature to help drum up interest in the 2019 iPhones.

If Apple designed a phone for a mini pencil concealment, I'd buy one. The X/XS/11 series isn't that phone though. I'd say this rumor is silly for 2019.

I hope this comes true.

Not speaking to your post directly (just happens to be the first one I saw), but it's interesting how Steve J and lots of Apple fans panned and ridiculed the S-Pen, And now...

Why?!?

Sweet Jesus, you have 10 of these already, they're called fingers.

Try it and you will see (I love the S Pen). It's actually a great tool. But Apple will eventually need to figure out how to attach this to the phone. I doubt people are going to take the time to hunt down the pen to use it on their phone.

Ya but making art on a smaller iphone screen? I dunno. I get it for iPads but I've even seen artist say the 11" is a bit small or drawing so I can't image even the large iphones being good for this.

Photoshop on iPhone. It’s coming for iPad, so why not the iPhone?

Before the inevitable comments about how ridiculous it would be to use Photoshop on an iPhone, there’s one good use case:

When a client calls you and likes the ad you created (for example) but just has one small change to make and it’ll be perfect. Load it up on your iPhone, make the change and done.

It’s not for doing the heavy lifting of creating the content. It’s to give you the ability to fine-tune content at the last minute.

This reminds me a meme of “new iPhone according to customer request” image.

People always cherry pick that one single Jobs quote and try to use it to infer what he meant while conveniently ignoring his other quotes.
People does that all the time cause it is more natural and needs less effort.
In my mind, this is long overdue, especially for the Plus/Max models.
I am skeptical about this, give the otherwise super small screen size, even though touch on iPhone XS Max is as always inaccurate.

When he said that, every device required a stylus, you simply couldn't operate it any other way. You couldn't open a menu, check your mail, type a letter without using a stylus. He wasn't against artists and engineers drawing with a pencil.

for a phone he was against it. He thought it was a joke for the size to use a stylus.

But then if you think about it, finding the spot the customer is asking is harder on iPhone because the screen is just too small, while on the iPad, the screen is big enough to see the place that needs some fine touches. There is a reason why swift playground is released on iPad only.

I have a Note 9 and never use the S Pen outside of first getting the device to try it out. There are two guys at work with the Note 9 as well. I’ve never seen them use it other than showing what it can do to others the first day they got their phone. I find it’s too much hassle to get it out of its holder just for some quick task and then having to put it back. I’m curious what specific tasks you find you’re using that make it a “great tool”.

Even the AirPods don't switch fast enough to make this usage scenario realistic, and they're pretty quick.
Off topic a bit but AirPods and Powerbeats Pro should support connecting to multiple devices simultaneously, allowing easy switch between different sources.

To be fair, he made this comment when the dominant touchscreen technology was resistive. The user experience was not up to par to what the iPhone offered at the time.
To be fair, he was right though. I have been there and done that and still totally agree with his points.

I had the original Galaxy Note - it was the first phablet and it had a Wacom digitiser in it. It filled a niche nicely and was a market-leading, innovate product. The stylus inserted nicely into the chassis.

I also still have the original Surface Pro, also with a Wacom digitiser, and a Wacom Feel stylus (haven’t lost it yet). It feels much better than the Apple Pencil 2. Only trouble is it is not well aligned on the screen.

Nowadays I use the iPhone SE, iPad Pro with Apple Pencil 2, and occasionally the Mac Mini or Macbook Pro.

I could not image wanting to use an Apple Pencil 2 with a phone of any size. I also hope to see the continuation of the SE, as I prefer to use my phone like a phone, just as I prefer to use the Apple TV to watch TV rather than plugging in a Mac Mini and using its remote control.

My fingers can’t draw as accurately as the pencil can. Just because it’s supported doesn’t mean your fingers will stop working or that you are forced to buy and use the Apple Pencil. I couldn’t care less about dark mode. I am glad it’s there however, for those who do.
