Although eight years late it's a welcomed addition. Questions are, will it be backwards compatible with existing Pencils or will it require yet another device specific Pencil? And, where do you stow it besides pocket protector if it's not inside phone?

Maybe they discovered they could do it for no money and decided (maybe) to include the support. I'm sure it would work at least with the P1. The iPad mini 5 is P1 compatible.

Amazon sells rubber pen tips and cap keepers very cheap.

Right! Apple preferred tailoring to the Asian market, who LOVES huge phones. The hit of the iPhone SE showed there is large demand for smaller form factors. Unfortunately Apple mistakes this for people just wanting a cheaper phone.

There was never a large following for iPhone SE. Even 18 months after launch, the SE couldn't beat the 5S in market share.

The demand for SE largely came from emerging markets like India. Once Xiaomi and Huawei began selling 6" phablets in India for under $200, the market for SE vanished and Apple pulled the plug on SE.

I say this is a little long overdo. Now I do not see the point of buying a pencil just for the iPhone but it is nice if you say already have one for an iPad and are using it for the correct things.

I wouldn't want to buy an iPhone with the intention of walking around with a pencil stuck to its side. However, I do have a pencil for my iPad, and there have been times I've been using it, gotten a notification on my phone, and wished I could just use it there for a quick interaction instead of setting it down to use my fingers. Of course, that introduces a whole other level of device integration that we haven't really seen, with seamless, interaction-free, instant switching between associated devices. Even the AirPods don't switch fast enough to make this usage scenario realistic, and they're pretty quick.

If it has, then I buy.

Was planing to keep my 6S a year longer, but I LOVE Procreate on iPhone, except for the sh**** 3rd party styluses.

Hu, in what universe is the Apple Pencil under-appreciated?

It just doesn't make sense on such a small screen as the iPhone's. Imho.

if, like me, you type everything and have no artistic talent it makes no sense. I'm sure some people will get some value out of it. But I can't sketch a stick figure and all my work is submitted in the written word in a Court ordered format generated by a proprietary records keeping system.

just of no use to me. Your mileage will probably vary...

I really think I would use the pencil a lot with my phone! Love it with the iPad Pro, under appreciated innovation imo.

ApplePencil would be beneficial on a MB Air or Pro, oh I forgot Apple hates TouchScreen macOS. I can see the point (pun intended) of ApplePencil on a tablet with a larger drawing surface for illustration and graphic work, on an iPhone it is way too small to do anything productive other than quick note taking and minor adjustments. Plus where is the pencil going to be attached on the side of the phone like the iPad Pro 2018. Seems this rumour lacks some basic logic. :p

Cue the people misinterpreting Steve Jobs’ quote that “if you need a stylus, you’ve already failed”.

The Apple Pencil isn’t a stylus in the sense that they were used pre-2007. It’s a writing and drawing tool, not a primary method of interacting with the UI. If your UI requires a stylus, then yes, “you’ve already failed”.

That said, I don’t really see the point of Pencil on a device as small as the iPhone. On the iPad, it’s fantastic for editing photos with precision and taking notes in Notepad.
You can use what ever euphemisms you want to try and gloss over it but it's a stylus.

Handwriting input, drawing.

This is what the iPad is for. The only thing you can reliably draw on such a small surface are sketches of a dick. Which is also probably the target audience of such a feature.

Whenever I’m on the go, its just way to cumbersome to get out the pen and fiddle around with it. When I’m finally somewhere, there’s no point in using my iPhone for productivity if my iPad is right within reach.

So no, as long as the iPad is a thing (which I hope it will be for a long time, lovely device), I still see no use case for an iPhone pencil, other running around naked and therefore having no free space to squeeze an iPad in.

My biggest fear is, that this will fragment the App Store, making many apps unusable without a stylus, therefore destroying any sense of UX consistency. I think this is what Jobs was also concerned about.

I'm not against this, I love using the pen on iPad. But this Apple - it will of course only be possible with a new, third pen. It probably get charged in a totally new way too.

I though Jobs hated styli of any kind. This goes against Apples core principles.

Apples accessories line needs to supplement the lack of iPhone sales due to peak demand being reached. Have you not been paying attention to the financial call yesterday, I understand Cook can be boring on stage but come on. :p

So basically a wannabe Note??

Gonna be hilarious to read the YouTube comments from the Sammy fanboys if this actually happens

Nope.... the Note does not have Notability!!!! For recording WHILE taking TIME STAMPED notes....nothing compares.

The creative possibilities that the Apple Pencil provides for artists and the type of stylus that Steve Jobs talked about are two very different things.

On a small device even the Max, is way too limiting to do anything creatively serious. :p

If you already have an iPad with a pencil it can be helpful.
If you don’t have either it’s going to change nothing for you. Didn’t need to use a pencil then, don’t need a pencil now or the future.

If you belong to the second group of people, why do you have to poop on the first group?

Pressure sensitivity would be great for use with the Apple Pencil.
But at least for now you can use the Pencil as a very fine tip stylus for making fine, clear adjustments where your finger would otherwise not do or be in the way.
At least on the XS Max.
