As stated before, there is a difference between announcements and shipments.
Apple probably skipped this CPU because the delivery date was too close to Skylake.

Maybe apple made a deal with intel to get rid of their old stock, but in turn let them have skylake early??? In the end it might not be such a bad deal since broadwell bench's aren't anything spectacular.

There is a lot of negativity here about this update, but 2 things to keep in mind:

1) As Intel announced, these chips aren't available for another 6-8 weeks. The first PCs shipping with them will be in August. Apple couldn't wait that long, they needed to upgrade to the new Force Touch trackpad.

2) Broadwell is an insignificant upgrade. Benchmarks show a 10-15% increase in actual speed, and the Iris Pro 6200 is about 10% faster.

I am willing to bet Apple tested Broadwell and Skylake, and decided to skip Broadwell for now in lieu of launching Skylake end of this year or early 2016.

I personally think this was a smart decision on their part, and I purchased the maxed out 15" a week ago. I'm happy with it, it's a nice upgrade in every regard. Screaming fast SSD, a quad core Haswell I haven't been able to bog down even with video editing, and a new dGPU that makes me proud of AMD (I've been an Nvidia fan for most of my life, but this thing is solid).

Am I disappointed Broadwell is coming out in 6 weeks and I bought a Haswell? No... well, maybe a li...who am I kidding? DAMN YOU APPLE!!!

+1
i perform a lot of CPU intensive tasks and I havnt come close to bogging down the CPU.
ditto RE skylake if it comes with a re-design, otherwise i will wait for cannonlake

I would think the meager 'update' to the 4th gen powered MBP being already outdated should have come as no surprise. News of 5th and even 6th gen technology being just around the corner has cast a shadow over that 'old' laptop for months now.

I'm not putting down the current MBP, it's a great machine (especially compared to my aging 2008 Unibody) but I just don't want to feel I've spent thousands on older technology when soon I can instead invest in a new generation of laptop.

1. Apple updates laptops and 2 weeks later intel announces new chip
RESULT: Everyone Upset their notebook is outdated

2. Apple doesnt update laptops and waits 2-4 months before updating laptop so they can have new chips
RESULT: Everyone is upset they took so long and did not do a redesign

Really there's no reason for anyone to be upset, especially if you own the dGPU model.
a 10% bump on paper is a 0% difference in reality.

Before people get butt hurt, there's still a lot of facts we don't know about when it comes to this release.

Apple isn't stupid. They knew when these CPUs were coming. Given the delay, there could several factors. For one, Intel probably can't produce these chips in large enough quantity. Plus, although these were announced, they may not be shipping for months. The rumored skylake architecture could indeed be around in the Fall 2015, which Apple could also know. Thus we may see a late 2015-early 2016 skylake refresh.

I don't think it's in the best interest of any tech based company to forgo something like this unless there was a good reason for it.

I don't think anyone is doubting the chops of the 15" rMBP, the thing that is slightly chaffing is paying tomorrow's price for yesterday's goods.

Apple will truly upgrade this machine in ~1year with Broadwell or Skylake, a new dGPU plus USB-C and TB3 which will officially support eGPU plugins. I'll use my Thinkpad/iPad until then. :)

Just out of curiosity.
Why are some assuming that the next refresh will include a GPU upgrade?

Are you refering to next generation integrated GPUs or discrete GPUs?
Integrated I understand but I have a hard time imagining that the M370X will only be with us for one cycle.

My guess is that they are waiting until Skylake and will do a redesign with the new thunderbolt 3 connectors and USB C. On the flip side, there is very little reason to upgrade until Skylake if you can wait.

I guess the main difference is that the m370x is really a chip from 2012/2013, while the 650/750m was basically brand new and state of the art when released in 2012.

If skylake comes out this fall, you may be right and we will be getting a m370x re-hash. If it comes out next year, hopefully we'll get a 14nm dGPU upgrade...

Where did you read that TB3 would officially support eGPU?

Its not like Apple was caught off guard to this. Intel tells all their customers when to expect the chipset.

Given how late in the year this was rolled out, why should apple embrace Broadwell when Skylake is literally around the corner.

Its less about playing its customers for fools but rather laying the groundwork imo for a bigger update in the fall.
Last month's refresh of the 15" MBP is the freshest Apple could make it for the back-to-school shopping season without risk of supply-related delays. In October, Apple will be able to release a Broadwell 15" MBP in time for the Xmas/Hanukah/Kwanza/Festivus shopping season, again without risk of supply-related delays. Then Apple can release Skylake MBPs after the Chinese New Year shopping season.

That could mean that Apple is going to be updating both the Macbook Pro and the Mac Pro later this year, along with a 5k TB3 display for pro users.

TB3 doesn't support DisplayPort 1.3. From Anandtech:-

Speaking of encapsulation, Thunderbolt 3 also includes an update to the DisplayPort side of matters, though likely not what everyone has been expecting. With the increase in bandwidth, Thunderbolt 3 is able to carry twice as much video data as before. However Intel is not implementing the latest version of DisplayPort – DisplayPort 1.3 – in to the Thunderbolt 3 standard. Instead they are doubling up on DisplayPort 1.2, expanding the number of equivalent DisplayPort lanes carried from 4 to 8, essentially allowing one Thunderbolt 3 cable to carry 2 full DisplayPort 1.2 connections. The end result is that Thunderbolt 3 will not be able to drive the kind of next-generation displays DisplayPort 1.3 is geared towards – things like 8K displays and 5K single-tile displays – but it will be able to drive anything 1 or 2 DisplayPort 1.2 connections can drive today, including multiple 4K@60Hz monitors or 5K multi-tile displays.

Not a valid point. If they had chosen to not update the 15", then yes, I understand what you mean. But they update the trackpad, GPU, SSD, but not the CPU? While also going to the next generation CPU in the lower end, 13" models?! It's a very odd choice.

This will not happen.

I know you wouldn't want it to, based on your sig, but why couldn't it? It already says "new" under the 15". It would just say 5th generation processor on the build page. The few who notice will probably get a swap out.

The thought that Apple skipped these chips because it will be too close to Skylake by the time they receive them doesn't make any sense.

I'm pretty sure Intel knows when OEMs will be receiving their chips and they aren't going to release two updates within a few months of one another (especially in the current market where there isn't any competition in terms of performance). They're only competing against themselves.

Until the competition catches up, Intel will continue to do the same thing. You'll continue to hear about their "roadmap" and the great products that are on the horizon. Intel will have these products ready (just in case) but unless they feel threatened in some way, they'll continue to push back the release of these products (they'll release products just often enough to appease customers).

Normally, I'd expect Apple to release a silent update to the 15" MBP whenever they get these chips in hand, given that it's simply a drop-in replacement. The thing that has me scratching my head is the fact that this is a rather significant update. The processors see a nice boost across the board (particularly to the base clock) but the real jump is in the integrated graphics (the jump to Iris Pro 6200).

It doesn't really make sense that Apple would update the 15" line now, only to release another (arguably even more significant) update a few weeks later, given the expectations of most consumers (i.e. that it's a good time to upgrade because there won't be anything better for awhile).

Unfortunately, I'm guessing Apple either got some sort of deal on these Haswell chips, or they had a bunch of inventory already. Apple isn't stupid. They know people that dropped $2000+ on the latest 15" MPB will be ticked when a better processor is announced 2 weeks later, so they're obviously benefiting in some other way (a way they feel will more than offset any damage inflicted by an angry customer base).

Couldn't this also mean that Skylake is delayed? So Intel now offering an upgrade path for manufacturers for the next 6 - 8 months and Skylake mobile only appearing Q1/Q2 of 2016?
Not picking on you, but I LOVE the folks who see delay after delay after delay with Intel, yet think Skylake is going to be released on time. Somehow they think a slew of Broadwell chips are going to be released, an then the next week, their Skylake replacements are going to hit the shelves as well.

One of these days I expect that they would be able to buy a clue. But I have my doubts.

Spot on, IMO.

You people realize that they announced only desktop CPUs right?? LOL

You read the link in the original post right? LOL
