What an incredibly boring brand update. Thankfully most Android users will still get to see the much cooler font for another 2 years before they get any software updates

“Android 10” just sounds so far behind compared to “iOS 13”. Google are going to have to put out a lot of releases quickly if they want to catch up!

I've always used the numbers because it tells more. "That's Cookie Dough and that's Apple Pie" may not mean as much to someone that doesn't know what they are vs 5 or 9. (I told someone their tablet was running 5.0 vs 9.0)

Thanks for the laugh. You think all those Android Fisher Price Apps allow you to do more than iOS?

Let me know when Android gets full blown Photoshop. Or any of the numerous other high-end Apps that simply have no equivalent on Android, thanks to the fact Android is useless on tablets.
Android is useless period.

Folks, Android 10 will be officially available on devices after the launch of Android 11 beta ;)

People like you will never understand, that updates are not just about new features, but about security.
No, you can't just patch everything with a monthly user level patch. For some issues, you have to patch the kernel or you have to build an entire new policy system (Google did this more than once).
If you don't get a major update, you will never get any of these issues fixed.

And your claim, that users only user their phone 2-3 years is total bs.
Even those who do are selling their phone to the next user.
I still see Android phones with Android 4.x and 5 every day. Most users are totally unaware, what is the latest version, what benefits will it provide, what bugs were fixed and what malware is able to infect their phone (okay, they have Google apps on it - the widest spread malware on this planet)

I have an iPhone 4s, that's still in almost perfect condition - a few years ago, I gave it to my mother in law and she would still use it today. But there are no updates anymore, so we bought her a newer Phone.

It is a mistake to compare Android to iPhone because basically you are comparing iOS + iPhone to Android OS. If you really want to compare it, try to compare it to let say Samsung Galaxy S Series to iPhones. With that you can give context to security updates, features and etc...

It is a fact that some companies does not provide update that often but if you let say buy Google Pixel then you can always have the latest security update and etc. If you want to update your phone on a daily basis then try LineageOS which is an Android OS.

Well, it goes to show that a lot of people here, out of there hatred in Android OS or iPhones push a lot of ideas that are out of context.

Just because they can doesn't mean they do; until Apple violates that trust, people have little reason not to trust them. Thus far, Apple has respected the privacy of its users. Google and Amazon has demonstrated that our privacy means little next to the almighty dollar.
Tell that to its Chinese base users. In China, Apple must submit to the governments request on providing whatever data it has to its user anytime they ask. Double standard privacy? But I understand, outside US, China is its next cash cow and for that they are willing to cooperate without hesitation with Chinese government. On the other hand, Facebook and Google are not allowed on China because they are unwilling to submit to the governments demand.

MR, you forgot to post the minimum requirements to run the OS:

- Septillion core processor
- 120TB RAM
- A smug sense that you’re somehow off the grid by supporting one giant conglomerate instead of a different giant conglomerate

The irony of this is that it doesn't require that to run, that is what some OEMs are doing. Look for instance at the Pixel lineup and you see the hardware isn't crazy like this.

I feel like the third point is easily as applicable to the Apple side of the fence. Fanboys are bad for anything, use what you like and move on.

Apple privacy hero here? The company who let devs to store and sell your information freely and making tons of money and still they can do it if they dont get caught and when they do they only maybe banned from appstore.

Haha...... ..... ..... ha!
I do find it somewhat sad people think Apple is not milking that data as well.
In some ways Google is much more open with what they do with the data they collect and sadly have a much larger vest interested in keeping it private than Apple does. Apple gets it all stolen they have a break of trust. Google gets it all stolen not only is it a break of trust but also how they sell that data for ads gets taken so they lose business.

Microsoft makes Windows for OEMs to use. They don't have a problem issuing updates to everyone. It's a massive failure on the part of Google that has caused this problem.

I think the reason for that is, in Android OS the hardware manufacturer has a lot if not complete freedom to customize the OS and for that reason pushing update is left to the manufacturer. You really cant compare how Microsoft push for update with Android OS because they are very different platform. In the same context you really cant compare how updates are push in iOS and Android OS. You can however compare Google Pixel with Apple iPhone.

My biggest issue with Android is the lack of day 1 software update support. Depending on your phone model, you never know when the latest version of Android will be available for your handset. Totally different from iOS. This is rather a huge deal for me, as in these times where hacks and leaks are prevalent, I would want my devices to be the most secure possible. Android doesn't guarantee that and until they do, I will be sticking to iOS for time to come....
In my case, my Android OS phone has a daily update but Im too lazy to do the update that its been almost 3 months since my last update.. Maybe tomorrow i will :)

This is not a “simple mistake” made by Google early on (allowing OEMs to modify Android). It was a choice and a gamble. Google wanted people to use Android so it relaxed the conditions for its use. It knew full well what might happen if Android took off (too many variations to control) but they made that choice anyway. Now they’ve spent the last 10 years trying to put the genie back in the bottle.

Google should have placed strict limits on what OEMs can do to Android so they could continue to provide updates despite what modifications those OEMs did. It’s not like this issue wasn’t already well understood when Android was developed.

Who said its a mistake? Its an open source OS, its serve its purpose and for that reason it is a more superior OS compared to iOS.
I guess I will be reading a lot of throwback from fanboys with my last sentence :) well, it is what it is.

Numbers are dull. Perhaps "Scoop of French vanilla ice cream with shot of espresso in Baccarat crystal goblet" would have been too much, however "Bananas Foster" would have been apropos.

And manufacturers don't want to update the OS on their old phones because who would buy their latest models with the go faster stripes? Make no mistake, unless you buy a phone that run stock android, updates are a pipe dream.

Superior OS? Hardly. Inferior Apps, lazy developers, useless on tablets, riddled with malware, poor security and system updates.

Fanboys? Is that your response when you can’t formulate a proper rebuttal?

Haha.. It seem you are really misinformed about Android OS. You would be amazed my Android Phone has a daily update and you are calling devs lazy. You really are a something, you didnt even bother to check your facts and right away dismisses things. For decency, at least be honest that you dont know a lot about what Android OS is.

You talk about security, my phone can mount/dismount and create LUKS format container. It has SELinux installed which protects me from a lot of secuerity threath including malwares.

Which device are you getting daily updates on? I have a Note 9 and S10+. I'm not seeing these "daily updates". I waited 5 months just to get Pie on my Note 9.

Do you own any Android tablets? Ever tried to find actual tablet optimized Apps that weren't just blown-up phone Apps? You better believe Android developers are lazy when you look at the sorry state of Android on tablets. Google doesn't even have a tablet section on Google Play (they had one but dropped it because it was a wasteland).

They aren't interested in tablets so why would they?

Its a tanking category. Despite Apples insistence that they are the future of computing sales of tablets have been on the slide for years.
