That article is really just plan stupid. There are plenty of good criticisms of Android, but the article is just plain wrong in spots. For example, it's a stretch to call Android "free", providers need to license Google's map and market apps or provide an alternative. Or blanket stating that "Google is an adware vendor" is a very naive view of their business at best. The article reads like an ad for Symbian.

And no, I am not a fan of Google's "all your data are belong to us" approach.

It will take time, but I see Android taking an open source life of its own in the future, and that is not something that can easily be said of the alternatives at the moment.

Please. The only thing on that list that apple was actually responsible was the mouse. The iPod and iPhone are both a pain in the ass to use for me, mainly because they restrict choice the most of any apple product.

They weren't even responsible for that.

okay I have a iPhone for personal line and a Google Dev 1 (Android) phone for Business/Development and they both have their own special things but my issue with the Android is I read is the early adopters with the G1, Dev 1, My Touch 3G will not be able to upgrade to 2.0 and beyond.

So yes if you don't mind buying new phone every year then Android is great.....

Lovely isn't it? The $450 unsubsidized phone is no longer supported after a year, but the iPhone 2G which was $400 is still supported.

Restrict choice? The iPhone and iPod are revolutionary devices. You have the greatest choice in the world: the choice to NOT buy the device.

Do ipods playback divx/xvid?
FLAC, OGG, WMA?
Proper equalizer?
Removable battery that doesnt void warranty?
Allow me to take songs back to my computer from the player itself? (UMS/MSC)
ETC? ETC? ETC?

No? So where does CHOICE come into play with ipods/iphones?

Yes, but other manufacturers also give you the choice of not buying their device, PLUS the choice to install everything you want on it, if you decide to buy it. :D

Thought so.

Then buy the other device that's just as good as the iP . . . oh wait.

LOL, so buy the other device anyway, with all the "choice" you want. And then go right back to Apple.

Android for the iPhone User

Android is gonna kill the iPhone in the future if Apple doesn't keep innovating.

This is why if you are an iPhone User it is even more in your interest that the Android OS does well. Apple needs a push to keep it from resting on its laurels.

The resting on your laurels happens more often than we want to think about. Also it is not a new thing. MS did it but got away with it with Excel until Lotus 123 came. Excel stayed at version 1 for years, resting. Then in the MS-DOS area Lotus 123 refused to come out with a graphics version because they rested. Now how many people remember Lotus 123.

Apple needs to be pushed. For some time Android will not be able to rest or it will go away before it has a chance to be used.

Android has the ability to give Apple a push. I was hoping that Palm would be able to do it also, but it is only one company that everyone seems to want to make totally irrelevant.

I haven't used Android, but overall the interface looks less intuitive than the iPhone (from the video). That is probably the killer for me. I would want to try it first hand before I made a decision.

Oh my god. Would you not be one of those people.... please. I cannot stand people like you who think every device must give the user the ability to do everything otherwise it just evil. I sure as heck hope you don't use OS X or Windows, if you do, you're a hypocrite.

will there be an app or any kind of way to sync android phones with itunes music?

You missed the section on "Symbian is being pushed by big vendors." Yes, he knows about Motorola.

Yeah Android will probably go further than now, but probably won't become the top player.

Market share isn't everything. If you sell iPhone at $1, then it'll probably be the top selling phone, but you'll lose tons of money. Instead, you want to consider total revenue and profit to revenue. Keep in mind that using economic indicators, Apple rivals Nokia, the company that is number 1 according to volume.

I read over that but didn't really care about his Symbian point. Imo, Symbian's a dead OS unless they do something drastic to overhaul it. It might have the numbers now but it feels like the Palm Pilot did back when Blackberries came around.

I hope people take android seriously. That means, not making comments like 'it doesnt have the apple logo on it, it sucks'

I think Android will be one of the big players in the future of mobile and so will Apple. I prefer the iPhone. I like its usability and UI much better than Android. Android is also still catching up in many ways and is becoming fragmented as a platform.

Cowon S9. Look it up, get informed.

Fortunately for me, OS X is pretty much perfect for my needs, and doesnt hinder the performance of installed applications on it, so 'choice' isnt as big of an issue on a very narrow platform like a portable audio device, depending on how you look at it. But go ahead, keep thinking apple is doing absolutely everything 100% right. I just love seeing when people omit rational thinking.

It's Apple that sees how PEOPLE can use the devices.

Without Apple, those technology will probably be locked in a room somewhere.

Too bad "you" are not the public.

I'm pretty sure I never said Apple does everything 100% right.

And by using OS X, which to an extent limits a multitude of things you could do, you are a hypocrite. Enough said.

If I weren't sitting in Panera with my laptop, I would have really ROFLMAO. Doesn't it really sound just like Apple to stop improving on something just because it's in the lead? You know, like how the iPod hasn't changed since it came out. The iPhone hasn't changed since it came out. OS X has no new features over top of the original 10.0. Well, except that you can play DVDs and burn CDs, but that doesn't really count.

Yes, you're right. "Android is gonna kill the iPhone" because Apple will stop innovating. That sounds so much like Apple's history.

Hopeful

I've been an Apple Evangelist since 1990, and have a basement of sealed boxes to show it.

However, if this product on Verizon is even close to my iPhone experience i'll switch in a second when I'm due in Jan 2010.

The frustration of having a Verizon Family Plan with 5 phones, them 1 at&t account for "my" iPhone is very costly.

I'll be VERY interested in the $ of the Data Plan for the Droid.

Sorry Steve. If I have a choice on this one, I'll go. :apple:

Exactly.

I forgot people look for a media player that specifically has a removable battery.

Wrong.

I have the choice of using Windows, Linux or OS X on my Mac Pro. I chose OS X because it suits me best, and has the least limitations for my needs. But....

How is this a relevant comparison when it comes portable devices? Are you just forcing the 'hypocrite' insult? Yes, yes you are.
