I think it's funny when people say, "I hope Apple is listening . . . " as if Apple isn't already planning 5 years into the future . . .

Palm Pre seems to still being doing quite well.

It is doing reasonably well, but what people need to realise is there is a big difference between the Pre outselling the iPhone and Pre saving Palm. I really like the WebOS (see above post) but it's a shame about the build quality of it, but it is a 1.0 device.

The Palm Pixi looks like it may have solved some of the hardware issues, so personally I'm hoping Palm goes from strength to strength as WebOS is an amazing platform and it would be a real shame if it was swept under the carpet.

Android as it is now is too complicated and difficult to average people. By saying this i mean it's a platform to geeks or just more technically educated people. Iphone os is app centric, intuative and simple and is adored by all. It is not better, it's just made for the majoraty. It will be interesting to see how this plays out because these two companies have different goals... Google needa to make android more simple and Apple needs to implement better multitasking and notification system at same time by not making iphone more difficult to use...

Care to actually say how Android is "too complicated" for average people? Sure if you want to root your phone it may take a bit of work, but the stock Android OS works well. If all of your music is in iTunes then you have to find another program to use to sync your music, which can be found with a simple Google search.

It took me literally 5 minutes to be up and running on my new phone after taking it out of the box. Sign into my Google account and viola my e-mails were synced as well as my calendar. In the week I have had my new phone I have had to connect it to my MacBook exactly once: to grab my music from my iTunes. The new OS update, 1.6. was automatically sent over-the-air.

I'm not seeing anything amazing here. What am I supposed to be excited about?

And would it be possible to port the Android OS to an iPhone, if one was so inclined? ;) Just wondering.

For all those of you who keep pinning iPhone against Android or keep calling Android the next iPhone killed/ iPhone direct competitor you are nothing but Clueless.

Android is not here to kill iPhone. It is here to help Google penetrate into the mobile market. By doing this they can offer their Search service (What makes money for them) on Mobile devices.

Android is not here to compete against iPhone, they are here to gain market share.

Google would be stupid to go Head to head with Apple, not because they could not do it but because compared to other platforms (RIM Nokia WINMO), Apple Market share is not that big. So the ones that they have to go after are RIM Nokia and Winmo. Those are the platforms that have substantial market share to loose.

What, like a smartphone ( iphone) that isn't capable of multi-tasking ( without hacking it ) .. thats not 5 years in the future, its five years behind!

Hate to tell you but Apple bought and rebranded companies that invented all of that for the most part. It would have happened regardless.

That reminds me of a comment a Playstation fanboy once said, that if it wasn't for Sony video games system wouldn't have DVDs. Yes, as if it wouldn't have happened. If you really think about it, it's an incredibly dumb comment.

okay I have a iPhone for personal line and a Google Dev 1 (Android) phone for Business/Development and they both have their own special things but my issue with the Android is I read is the early adopters with the G1, Dev 1, My Touch 3G will not be able to upgrade to 2.0 and beyond.

So yes if you don't mind buying new phone every year then Android is great.....

I'm really suprised about this if the iPhone wasn't allowed new firmware updates people would be livid. No one seems to care on Android.

Isn't that kind of an oxymoron?

You don't think Google's long term goal with Android is to become a dominant player? I could see it happening in time (and yes I use the iPhone currently).

The iPhone is sexy. The iPhone OS is sexy.

Android is not sexy. Not a single hardware offering is sexy. It's quite boring really.

I've spent a lot of time with the HTC Hero and the T-Mobile G1. I was bored in under an hour. The app store isn't fun. The web browser isn't fun. Just goofing off around the phone isn't fun. Customization? Wow, I got to change what kind of clock is displayed on the main screen and got to set a different wallpaper in the background. Who cares? It's fun for awhile. You're most likely going to keep this phone for 20+ months until you're eligible for an upgrade again. That's a long time.

The Motorola Droid will be a huge opening week launch for Verizon, mark my words. If there is a phone company out there that knows how to market a phone and build hype, it's Verizon. That piece of crap Blackberry Storm sold a ridiculous amount of units in the first two weeks. But once it sets in, once people realize what the phone is really about, it'll wear off.

People will still be asking for the iPhone. Guaranteed.

Android wins here

Android is gonna kill the iPhone in the future if Apple doesn't keep innovating.

What will drive me to the Android is my lack of signal from AT&T.

If I can get a smartphone from Verizon - that has 5 bars everywhere around me - then that's what I will have to do.

An iPhone with no signal from AT&T is a non-issue here.

i only hope t hat I can sync my Android with iCal.

I hope Android does get better and better, because it'll force the iPhone OS to get better and better, and that way we all win.

i hope along with you, but i see nothing here that makes me think it is more than hope....

Android largest challenge isn't from the iPhone, but itself: Fragmentation - kind of like what happened to Symbian with different flavours of UI - UIQ, S60 et al. In Androids case, different hardware and customizations. Software that will work on some phones, won't work on others.

Well said. I've posted quite a bit on this point in the wake of Droid's ad campaign. Many technologically savvy users (including a lot of MR readers) see the vast choice and customization available to android as a big plus. To many consumers, it's a profound minus.

With the iphone, you know what you're getting. There are 2 choices to make - 3G vs. 3GS and (if you choose 3GS) 16 GB vs. 32. These are easy choices to understand (3GS = more speed; 32 GB = more capacity), and frankly, your user experience won't be that vastly different regardless.

Not only do you know what you're getting, you know how it will work, and that's well. The same company designed the hardware and the software. It integrates with itunes, just like your ipod. If you're ever confused about where you are in the iphone OS, there's only one button to push, and it will get you back home.

Android is not like that. There are different models, different manufacturers, different flavors of android. These all run differently and have different capabilities. You have tons of options - and tons of ways to get lost, in both purchasing and use, if you don't know what you're doing.

I'm not bashing android - I'm really not. I think it looks nice, and personally, I would like a little more of android's options in the iphone OS. But I'm not a typical consumer. How many of you have seen a friend's mac that still has the launch icon to apple.com in the dock, just because the owner doesn't know or care to remove it? I don't know if those people are the "typical" users, but there sure are a lot of them, and android is not going to appeal to them.

The iPhone is behind the times in so many areas it's just silly. The iPhone's camera was crap and obsolete the day it came out. Heck, my FOUR year old Nokia N73 has a 5 MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics, zoom, and a flash. What kind of camera does the iphone have again? Oh, right, a piece of ****.

Sexy, yes the iPhone is a nice looking phone. But I don't understand how the is iPhone any more or less boring than an Android phone? I am doing similar things on my MyTouch that I did on my iPod. The only thing I can say is that the iPhone/iPod has more games, but most of my games on my iPod Touch were pick up and play for a short period of time. If you use the number of games that the iPhone has, than yes Android is more "boring" than the iPhone.

Competition and competing markets do drive technology and prices. While there may be "Apple Fanboys" . . . are there "AT&T Fanboys" in the same number? Probably not, right? With a monopoly in the US, AT&T is a good example of what happens with there isn't sufficient competition in a marketplace.

So, have at it Google, RIM, Palm, Moto, HTC, Nokia, MS, Qualcomm . . . make us better stuff!

Do ipods playback divx/xvid?
FLAC, OGG, WMA?
Proper equalizer?
Removable battery that doesnt void warranty?
Allow me to take songs back to my computer from the player itself? (UMS/MSC)
ETC? ETC? ETC?

No? So where does CHOICE come into play with ipods/iphones?

Quite simple, really. Don't buy one if you don't like the terms/limitations. It's not like any of that is a secret.

I don't quite understand the sense of self-entitlement of "I want an iPhone/iPod, but I want to do all this stuff it doesn't. If it doesn't do it, I'm going to complain about it".

What's wrong with buying a different product? It's not like there's a shortage of competent devices out there.
