Somewhat unexpected given the perception of the Apple fans (Apple stickers on the cars and such) but on the other hand, growing Android market share clearly confirms it.

Having to buy a new cheap phone after the one that just broke, it's not loyality but optionless. Most of the people won't buy the cheapest iPhone over a $100 budget phone, plus it's not like there is another operating system wide available.

I think this element plays a pretty significant role in this measurement. A huge portion of Android's market share are budget to mid range phones. If one wishes to stay in this price range, not really comparable options in iOS.

Makes sense. Android users stick with Android and Apple users stick with Apple. That’s why I never got the constant bickering back and forth or the comparisons between phones as if it really makes a big difference in your purchase decisions. Each platform offers value to their users in different ways and we are all smart enough to decide what works for ourselves.

Disagree. iOS has more loyal customers. Android has smarter customers that are agnostic to any company or OS.

Oddly, I never think of them as smart or not smart. I think of them as "easily bored and eager to tinker with Android OS and to jump from phone manufacturer to phone manufacturer."

He’s pretty wrong about Android users. They’re not smarter just because they chose Android and a huge portion of them have a company of choice and stick with it.

The reason I stuck with iOS is that Android security updates are a complete cluster. And my iPhone 5s remained useful for nearly 5 years. Try getting that kind of mileage out of an Android...
Good for you, unfortunately my iPhone 5 died at iOS 7. What's so wrong about Android's Security Updates? They are monthly pushed via OTA so I don't get your point? My Galaxy S3 from 2012 is also still useful in 2018 and probably does more than your 5s ever will ;)

So by your logic you are only smart for if you choose to stick with Apple?

I agree. Not sure you can compare.... you'd have to take all the Android phones in the same price range as iPhones and then look at loyalty rates to know for sure.

Plenty of people i know would be using iPhones if they weren't forced into budget phone territory.

Monthly security patches would be better if every phone maker bothered to push them out and every carrier approved them.

So by your point you are only smart for if you choose to stick with Apple?

Nope.

Your intelligence and your choice of OS aren’t tied at all. You just choose what works for you and what you like. There’s no link between what phone you use and how smart you are.

That's an issue with the carriers though, not the OEM.

And the OEM doesn’t always push them out.

That I agree, there's choices and people choose what's best for them, but remember there are still smarter choices.

Good point. People tend to stick with what they know and are used to. I think it's a lot of the reason why Android buyers continue buying Android, and likewise iPhone buyers continue buying iPhones.
Exactly. I see many android phones where I work. The users are quite happy doing their routine tasks and are completely disinterested in any geek considerations. I think that cost was the initial motivation for starting out and staying with android phones. Android gets the job done and most people really don't care about coming over to ios.

Smarter? I've seen the pain that Android users suffer... but so many look at the selling price of the device, and then "put up" with the confusing, awkward operating system.

I think people think "smarter" because they envision that most Android users know how to do more than set up their phone and just use it.

A good many have NO idea and probably should be using an iPhone, but they get sold on Android due to hardware they like, price, friend told them it was better, etc.

There's an entire segment of Android folks who ARE "smart" (read: tech savvy) and do customize their devices, know how to guard against viruses, etc.

But, that is NOT most of the people I know who use Android phones. Hell, plenty of them can barely use the camera properly. I know they're not rooting a phone.
