I think people think "smarter" because they envision that most Android users know how to do more than set up their phone and just use it.

A good many have NO idea and probably should be using an iPhone, but they get sold on Android due to hardware they like, price, friend told them it was better, etc.

There's an entire segment of Android folks who ARE smart and do customize their devices, know how to guard against viruses, etc.

But, that is NOT most of the people I know who use Android phones. Hell, plenty of them can barely use the camera properly. I know they're not rooting a phone.

Another group of people know how to do all that but choose an iPhone because they can’t be bothered to MAKE their phone work.

Having been an iOS user that now uses Android, I gotta say -- it's pretty nice here. Unless I see some big changes in iOS 12, I expect my next phone to be an Android device as well. Android is really terrific, objectively speaking.

Now, my experiences are with STOCK Android -- that is, Android the way that Google intended for it to be. Many of the folks I've seen hating Android unsurprisingly have experiences with Samsung, LG, and the like. Or no experience with Android at all. But I digress. I implore for them to try the Pixel. Go take a look at the Pixel sub on Reddit and you'll find pages of pleasantly surprised iOS users.

(Before the Samsung lovers lynch me -- I think the Note 8 and S9 look amazing, guys! I kind of want one!)

The Pixel XL would be the phone I'd be interested in, but it's had some well publicized quality issues as well -- though more hardware related. The screen is subpar--and it's arguably one of the most important components. Some units shipped without an OS at all. The exception is the camera is fantastic and possibly still the best out there even with the S9 out.

If Google polishes the next Pixel XL and creates better quality, nicer looking hardware I'd definitely be interested. The iPhone X is beautiful, but as everyone knows iOS 11 has been buggy. Apple doesn't seem to be able to do two things at once. They either have a stable, but boring OS or introduce more features that make iOS half baked.

If you think the 200$ Android phone provides the same UX as the iPhone X, I don’t know what to say.
It provides better, you probably haven't used a cheap Android phone have you? They are of a much better value than any phone nowadays especially the Squares on a Wallpaper phone. Just because it has an Apple on the back doesn't mean it's good.

I think at this point most users are deep enough in their respective ecosystems that nobody is want to switch.

I've converted a few friends within the past year to iOS, but they were only willing to go because (1) they were fed up with the lack of long-term support on Android, (2) they were fed up with the bad battery optimization on Android, and (3) they had few or no purchased apps or subscriptions. I'm not sure they would have gone if all 3 of those weren't true.

On the flip side, one of my co-workers is considering switching to from iOS to Android but is hesitant because he has about $50 of purchased apps on iOS.

The ubiquity of Android devices that are available for the average consumer makes statistics like “loyalty“ a little bit specious. I’m guessing the majority of people never “choose” Android in the first place. It’s just what was at the store. There are also a plethora of free or super cheap options, so “loyalty” is a proxy for “affordability” for a lot of people as well.

A much more nuanced survey would need to be done to determine true loyalty.

Yeah... that's essentially a description of my household. LOL. My husband and I work in tech. We really have zero interest in having to do anything but open a box, plug in a phone, and transfer info over from the last one.

It's not hard to figure out why iOS is losing support. It is getting more like Microsoft with all the freaking updates. They had a great product but they keep screwing with it. There was a time I could use my phone in the car. Oh yes, I can still make calls but I miss so many calls now because after the update to ios 11, my phone no longer rings in the car. I have hands free calling and answering. The buttons on the steering wheel allow me to make and receive calls without taking my hands of the wheel. Now after the update, the phone doesn't ring in the car anymore. So I have taken to mounting the phone on the dash so I can see when I am getting a call and answer it so I don't miss so many calls. It use to be so much safer before when my phone stayed in my pocket instead of mounted on the dash with me constantly looking at it to see id I'm getting a call. What a pain this had become.

You not read the article? If you had you'd have read the following which totally disputes your post:

These loyalty rates are not equivalent to switcher rates, where iOS wins out.

Device throttling which pissed off alot of loyal Apple users who expected better from a company who talks about transparency but in reality is shadier than anything to get people to upgrade their devices. Also whoever approved the iPhone notch should be fired. Worse design for an iPhone ever produced, no one wonder sales are dismal as well. Two more years until they get rid of the notch? Apple is losing it's edge on the competition.

Good for you, unfortunately my iPhone 5 died at iOS 7. What's so wrong about Android's Security Updates? They are monthly pushed via OTA so I don't get your point? My Galaxy S3 from 2012 is also still useful in 2018 and probably does more than your 5s ever will ;)
Oh, goody one of my favorite topics. The problem with Android updates is that there are three gatekeepers. First Google has to issue a generic Android patch. Then the OEM has to approve and issue the patch for your specific device. Finally your carrier has to approve and allow the patch to be distributed on their network. If your carrier or OEM has lost interest in your phone, as frequently happens in Android land, good luck getting a patch. And if you do, it's likely six months late. RIP, HTC Ruby...

How you work that out? Sheesh...
Because you said
"Is this loyalty due to the OS or loyalty due to the fact that many Android phones are dirt cheap?"
If you say you are loyal to Apple because of a great user experience I can also say that I am loyal to a dirt cheap Android phone because it gives me a great user experience. So your logic is flawed, loyalty has nothing to do with the phone's price.

Not with security updates, all those steps you described are done within 1 month which is the time you get separated security updates on Android.

I’ve used cheap Android phones and I’ve used expensive ones. There is a leap in UX that comes with better internals sometimes.

And that’s where the iPhone shines, really.

This is silly. I keep my contacts in Google because it's free, and I can access Google services easily from MacOS or Windows. (Or Linux!) Since my contacts are in Google, and I use other Google services, it's a no-brainer that I switched to Android. Especially because my phone does very specific, limited things, and I am utterly perplexed at people spending money on these disposable devices.

I also like being able to use an SD Card, replace batteries, and have traditional 3.5mm headphones. That also means i won't look at those high-end iPhone epigones which run Android.

I'm "loyal" to my iPad, as I haven't seen an Android tablet worth a damn, and I happen to be a big iPad user.

So I'm literally "loyal" on both sides. It's meaningless.

Dismal sales that are higher than almost every other smartphone maker in the world. I’d call your post fake news, but delusional is a better phrase.

It could be "loyalty" for Apple, as this is a single range of devices from a single brand, with a single experience.

One can't infer that the data means "loyalty" for Android, as this is a very large range of manufacturers of different devices with vastly different experiences, price points, default software and hardware capabilities.

If this was a set of graphs for "Samsung", "LG", etc. then one could compare that to "Apple" - but other comparisons are putting words into the mouths of Android users.
